Max Payload and SAE J2807

It was noted on another thread that the tundra has complied with J2807 towing specs since 2013. What effect does this have to max payload listed on my door sticker as the below is stated? Does this mean that if I have a max payload of 1200 lbs, 70lbs of gear and a driver/passenger that each weigh 150lbs that I still have 1200 lbs to work with for tongue weight, kids, gear, etc?

• It assumes there is both a driver and passenger in the vehicle, each weighing 150 pounds;

• It assumes that tow vehicles also include up to 70 pounds of aftermarket hitch equipment (where applicable); and

• For conventional trailer towing, SAE J2807 assumes that 10 percent of the trailer weight is on the tongue.

 

That is my understanding after reading the entire spec. J2807 was made so tow ratings would reflect the 'real world' rather than marketing says it can. So the 2x150 humans and 70 hitch is already included

 

Forgot to add that before j2807 our trucks had a higher payload by about that same amount of weight. Might vary a bit across the differnt models.

 

That 370 lbs makes a huge diff when towing with family and gear.

 

So this also applies to the GVWR? e.g. if your GVWR is 7200 and you scale it at 7570, you are in spec?

The way that I understand it is the J2807 is for towing only - not payload.

Payload is simple - take your GVWR and subtract your curb weight. Done. You don't get an extra 370 lbs because the towing spec assumes that you have some light ass people in your truck.

 

I ask because my payload (sticker) is 1,000 and I weighed my truck with 600 lbs of payload (including 2 light ass people), and 600 lbs on the hitch, and it was right at the GVWR of 7200, with only 28 gals in the 38 gal tank. If my payload is actually 1000+370 or 1370 pounds, I should have been 170 lbs below payload. Yet I was 60 lbs over the GVWR (after accounting for fuel differential).

My head hurts.

 

I wonder if the f150's crazy ass towing numbers comply with this standard.

 

Your head shouldn't hurt. If you are over GVWR - then you are overweight. Your truck with all of it's payload is not supposed to be heavier than the GVWR. A payload sticker of only 1,000 lbs is really low - even for a Tundra. I think mine reads 1350. In reality, it is less than that because I have added aftermarket components. Maybe your dealer put on a bunch of extra stuff that ate into your payload rating. Your GVWR is what it is - 7,200 lbs. That's it - it isn't 7,200 + 370 because of the towing spec.

 

My payload per the sticker is 1,085 and the yellow sticker says to reduce payload by an additional 83 lbs. And yes, my Tacoma had a higher payload.

 

Dang. What are the specs on your truck? I see that it is a 2019, but is it a CM (I am assuming)? Does it have a bunch of dealer-installed stuff on it? That is absurdly low.

 

So the premise of the OP's original post is false, right? I'm 170 lbs below payload of 1,370 lbs but 60 lbs over the GVWR. I'm just trying to understand where my math/logic is flawed. It leads me to believe the payload is the payload and the 370 is not additive.

 

Platinum 2019 CM loaded. Distributor options include a console safe, tube steps, and fender flares.

 

The way this reads, to me, is the standard requires everyone to test with the same amount weight for uniformity. The payload is the payload and there is no adjustment to the rating for the 370 pounds. This also makes sense to me based on my calculations, i.e. 1,200 lbs of weight minus payload rating of 1,000 so I was running 200 lbs over payload. GVWR is 7,200 lbs and I weighed 7,200 lbs with only ~28 gal of fuel in my 38 gal tank so I was over the GVWR as well. Close enough. I'll reduce weight in the bed and stow more in the RV which at 5,100 (weighed attached to my truck)+600 on my hitch was way below its GVWR of 6,395.

Edit: this also leads me to conclude that I can ignore the confusing payload BS and just make sure my fully loaded truck with fully loaded trailer attached does not exceed 7,200 lbs.

 

Damn, that is the lowest sticker payload for a Tundra I have seen. Now, mine is about the same - I have put on aftermarket stuff that reduces my payload to about 1150ish lbs. Throw me in there and I have around 900 lbs to work with.

This will probably cause an argument - but IMO, yes, the OPs premise is wrong. The SAE spec is for towing, not payload. That is why I always try to answer this question from a GVWR standpoint. It makes payload easy. Every truck is going to be slightly different because of different options/mods/etc. If you want to know how much payload you have - take your truck to a CAT scale and get the curb weight (fluids topped off and nobody sitting in the truck). Subtract that curb weight from the GVWR and you have your true payload. You aren't supposed to be heavier than your GVWR of 7200 lbs.
