It almost looks like muddy water. What exactly are we seeing there? When was the last time you changed your diff fluid?

 

Hard to tell if that's a real "oh-oh" or just oil, but those edges are looking pretty scraped.

 

Tomorrow the 02’ goes in the shop for 2 new rear wheel axle bearings. We’ll confirm the problem up on the lift and hope its nothing differential related! Might splurge on new drums/pads and brake cylinders depending on how things look as those will be off to access the axles.

Since last visit here:

1) Changed oil at 2k miles. Confirmed no more weeps from the high PAO synthetic put in last year. Been using the Mobil1 Syn ‘High Mileage’ and you can really see, with the eye, the seals plumped back up from the added conditioners. They even feel tackier and pliable again.

2) Performed Seafoam SS-14 Treatment for the top end manifold. Before it was all sooty black up in there. This stuff really works! Its all shiny new except for a few spots which should clear up on the second treatment next week. The truck was running very nice prior to treatment and wanted to experiment a bit knowing the top end (and valve heads?) was all sooty. The treatment made the truck rumble, bumble, ping, ting and clank a bit till she got about 10 miles on the OD. Smoked a little bit too! Had me nervous, but she settled back into the sweet purr.

I’ll be fogging the cylinder chambers on the second treatment prior and let it soak overnight. After all the bad mojo is loosened and blown out, then new plugs are going in.

That’s just oil. But those are the old worn out gears I pulled out who knows how many miles they have on them since it’s a junkyard rear end.

 

Yes there’s water in it and chunks of gear. I assume from the axle sitting outside until I installed it. I never changed the fluid just topped it off since I planned on a full rebuild as soon as I had the time.

 

My wife got me this awesome Rago Fabrication "universal" modular storage panel. Unfortunately "universal" is misleading.

I'd like to make it work on the halfdoor window but I'll have to find a way to mount it.





Rago includes these mounting brackets with their other products. I need something like that.

 

Got some help changing the transfer case oil.

I fired mine up to take it on a beer run and heard a whining sound coming from the engine. Quick troubleshoot indicates its one of the pulleys that is making the noise. Will have to diagnose further to find the culprit and make repairs. Sigh.

Emailed the toyota where I ordered my brake booster from to ask for an ETA. They're responses said several weeks due to a national back order.

Kinda want to cancel and go aftermarket now, I want my truck running sooner than Thanksgiving.

 

Were they cheaper than Cool Springs? I've not found anyone that can beat Roman's prices so if you have a source, please share.

Anywho I started getting the front end back together after painting the suspension with steel it. I only had about 4 hours to work on it because my wife was just getting over the flu and then I got the flu. So 1.5 days of worshiping the porcelain God and hopefully I get it back together tonight.

 

Don't want to hurt Roman's thing but I found cheaper, doesn't help me if the lead time is a month before it can be shipped my way. I'm going to have to make some phone calls to see who can do what and then make a decision.

 

Are there any local toyota clubs or FB clubs in your area? I’m part of one that has a lot of parts guys from the dealerships around town and they give members a good discount. I had almost 100$ off a 400$ order and cheap shipping. When I contacted Roman about parts, I was directed to the website to place an order, I didn’t see much discount or better prices so I went with my normal contact

 

Today:

1) Had Driver Rear Wheel Bearing replaced. Got to the shop early and was out by 12:30pm. Passenger rear side was good so we passed on the extra expense. So quiet now!

$493 out the door (1 rear bearing, seals, rings, etc.) Reused the ABS Ring.

Add $30 for my providing the Lucas 80w-90 Gear oil.

2) Came home and performed the second Seafoam Spray. Check Engine light comes on! Cheeks pucker!
Drove off the gunk on the highway. Came home and reset the battery disconnect style. Light disappeared! Changed spark plugs. Cylinder heads look cleaner than the other day. Purrrrr!

3) Did my stupid rear brake star adjust on the driver side to tighten the back up a bit. Raised the rear proportion adjust a bit to offset no longer having the side boxes weight. Ready for NASCAR so Ricky Bobby look out.

 

Not a member of anything. I just research the crap out of whatever is OEM and use whoever is within reason and can ship to the door fairly quickly. Whats a few extra dollars when service is good and product is top notch?

Some stuff is le$$ going through my local stealership. Sometimes the stealer costs more, but they save me from making mistake$ and help me get all the proper parts to do the job right. I usually use Toyota Parts Deal online and confirm the diagrams/parts list with my local stealers website.

Today I found...

 

I had some free time and access to a big printer, so I printed quite a bit of the service manual, it’s nice to see real pictures instead of the pixel blobs you usually see on the parts sites, but that’s good you can go local to get better input and tips about parts.
That 4runner group is pretty helpful(they also wheel every weekend) but there’s one guy who was a Toyota tech for 20 some years, so he’s seen a lot and has a lot of good input and info; I ask him way to many questions! And one of the parts guys on there(I’m sure all can do it) can find part numbers that aren’t always listed online; the weird lil nuts and bolts and clips
