Plastic Retention Screw Replacements

Is anyone using aftermarket/Amazon plastic screws on their trucks? I'm finding as I do a few tweaks here and there that a bunch have been broken in the past (before I got the truck). Wondering if there were any specific ones the group preferred. The Toyota ones are like $1.50 each, whereas they have 50-100 pieces on Amazon for $10 or less.

Anyone know the sizing offhand?

I use dealer oem parts like this, price is no big deal.

 

For me, depends on application. If it is used for something important such as holding on to critical/expensive components (usually not the case) then I’ll go to the dealership and buy it. If it’s for stuff that doesn’t pertain to my vehicles reliability (clips in the trunk that hold up lining, etc) the cheap stuff Amazon clips gets my money.

 

While it won't exactly put any of us in the poorhouse I would hope...$1.50 for a plastic plug while you can get quantities of similar items elsewhere seems like a waste. 50-100 pieces vs. 6 piece for $10 or so.

Curiously, what critical pieces of our trucks are held on by $1.50 plastic screws? I know there are some things like possibly bumper cover, etc., but I can't think of anything critical that wouldn't necessitate something a little more robust to keep things together.

 

I need to order some of this.

 

I've used the Amazon clips on my Lexus. They're fine. Even the oem ones are almost single-use.

 

I usually get the ones from Oreilly or Autozone in the 5 pack or however they come for like $3.99.

I haven't needed to replace any on the Tundra yet, but our other vehicles I have.

 

I have a couple of those assorted packs from Amazon and Ebay on hand. Find myself always using 1 or 2 on every vehicle that comes into the garage. I don't fret about a plastic clip. Doesn't match all the others? Oh well, it fits and its holding.

If you want to try and save the clips, stock up on the correct tools. You'll still break some clips here and there. It's inevitable. You can find the clip poppers and panel trim tools from Harbor for pretty cheap.

 

I've got all the proper stuff to remove them...finding out as I do some work here and there they were broken by the previous owner along the way.

 

I think when I had my Honda Civic, they had some plastic clips hold in some intake components. I went and purchased some OEM screws because it just fit snug and didn't allow the intake to move as much as the close enough screws. Usually, the Amazon clips work for me when I snap off those suckers from taking apart the plastic undercovers.

 

So the one I *needed* on one of the front bumper/under-light trim pieces the dealer just gave me when I went in to get some touch-up paint (some dingbat scratched my driver's door...can't win for losing with this truck it seems). I may still order the ones on Amazon to have them in the meantime for other pieces.
