I am trying to purchase a set of Michelins. Obviously, Big-O and Discount have to order them... Same story, "Well, we don't have any in stock, but we can order them." Well, I don't want to wait (and pay more) from either branch because I can order them too.

Tirerack.com shows them in their inventory, but they are either "special order", "out of stock" or "fewer than 4". I have purchased from Tirerack two times without issue, although this was several years ago. Really curious why they seemingly have nothing in stock.

Is Tirerack going under? I am not comfortable ordering from them if they are in financial shambles.

    Does anyone know?

    Where are you located?

When we order Michelin’s 95% of the time they come from a secondary supplier (here in town) and are received the same or next day via a route truck. We don’t charge you freight, either.
And if they’re not there and come from another part of the states, they’re generally only 3-5 days out (and we still don’t charge freight). Surely enough time to have them delivered and installed by end of day next Saturday at the latest.

If you want to buy them from Discount, give your local store a call on Monday morning. Give them the size and type of tire you want and ask for an honest ETA and where they would be coming from.
We sincerely appreciate you considering us for your tire purchase.
Any other questions feel free to PM me.

Slightly off topic, but I find eBay usually has better deals than 90% of places.

I found a site, simpletire.com, they had the best price including the 50 bucks I paid Firestone to mount & balance, they shipped to the Firestone too.

Pretty sure Michelin is the worlds largest tire company. Doesn't mean they can't go under but highly unlikely.

I usually go to Discount since they always take care of me. The problem is, I live about 100 miles away from the nearest Discount tire (Big O too), and they never have what I want on the shelf when I arrive... Even the most widely used tires, they seem to have to order them (including Michelin Defenders).

I don't understand, there are thousands of Tundras with 18" rims on the road and Michelins are very common, so why don't they stock them? Makes no sense to me. That is why I wanted to order them online, so I would have everything ready to go when I arrived at the tire shop instead of having to make a day out of the transaction.

It's like the furniture store with no furniture. They have to order it and have it delivered. Lol

My opinion is pay your local shop a few bucks more and live with it. Then if a problem arises you stand a better chance of a faster resolution. I order lots of things online but our vehicle and motorcycle tires always come from a local shop.

I highly doubt that Michelin or Tirerack is going out of business. It's more likely that Tirerack has either had difficulty getting the tires you want from their supplier or that they've determined that they don't sell them often enough to keep them in stock.

Some stores don't sell enough of certain tires (sizes or brands) to keep them in stock. Also, most guys with trucks are buying up sizes and more aggressive AT tires. That's about the best way I can explain why your store might not have them on their shelf.
If you really want to order them online, don't forget about our sister company, Discount Tire Direct (who has 20x 265/70/18 Michelins in stock ready to ship). https://www.discounttiredirect.com/buy-tires/michelin-defender-ltx-m-s.
And when you buy from DTD, you can still get our road hazard replacement certificates as well as our low price installation and lifetime free rotations, balancing, and flat repairs.

Thank you, Sir! We appreciate your business. Can't beat lifetime free seasonal change overs! ;)

Thank you Scuba. I might take the DTD path instead. Living in the middle of nowhere has its disadvantages :tumbleweed:

I will say, Discount has always provided excellent service.

And the worlds longest wait times. I will ever buy tires there again. Minimum 2 hours just to rotate.

No problem. I try and help where I can.
One of our biggest goals is to provide the highest quality customer service possible and it sounds like you’ve experienced just that. The founder of the company coined the phrase that “We are in the people business, not the tire business.”

Off topic but: there was a biography written about the founder of Discount Tire called “Six tires, no plan.” I believe any business person should read it.
