Behold the latest spy shots of a prototype for the next-generation
Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The redesign will be the first for Ford's full-sizer since the current F-150's redesign for 2015, with the new light-duty truck expected on sale in late 2020 as a 2021 model.

The bigger F-250 and F-350 Super Duty models should trail this F-150 by about a year.

Although the prototype is fully camouflaged, it's clear Ford is going with an evolutionary look for the new F-150, which makes sense as this is more of a heavy update of the current generation than a true redesign. The front fascia represents the biggest departure and it also appears that we'll be treated with a new headlight design.

The prototype sports a Crew Cab body style, and it looks like the cabin is slightly longer compared to the current F-150, which should mean more space for occupants. Speaking of the cabin, a substantially new design is expected for the dash. Part of the digital instrument cluster can be seen in some of the shots.

Ford has redesigned its famous F-150 pickup truck for the 2021 model year. There are a boatload of new features and upgrades that will be included in the new redesign.

With that said, Ram, Chevy, and GMC have all redesigned their pickup trucks for 2019/2020/2021. However, Toyota seems to be dragging its feet. Can Toyota really compete in this market segment?

Are we (Tundra Owners) a minority loyal niche, or are just only a Toyota Tundra cult? After all, we’ve been buying and driving the very same Tundra since 2007. There haven’t been any significant change in the tundra since then.

Has Toyota actually given up on us, its loyal Tundra customers? What gives????

But seriously, what’s your take on all the updates and offerings of the big three, compared to the Tundra?

they all do redesign their trucks at least every 4 years or so. But, it’s due to the fact that pickup trucks are so popular now and to satisfy the high demands of the market, they are forced to redesign often. Toyota redesign its cars quite often. But, for some reason they don’t do the same for the Tundra.

I'm one of the few, that don't need/want all that technology. A vehicle is made to be driven, too much shit to take your attention from the road. And if you need a truck to back your trailer, boat or travel trailer up, well you don't need a truck. I'm just a simple man, I get by just fine and better than most, without all that tech bs.

Updates have always come slower to Toyota than competing brands. An advantage of not changing bodies and drivetrains every few years is tried and true dependability. Ford often changes motors because issues destroy consumer confidence. Look at the Super Duty series,in 8 years you had 3 completely different engines hit the market. Arguably, each one worse than the last. Parts were discontinued while you were still balls deep in your engine bay.

I think there are 2 kinds of drivers on the roads these days..
A. Drivers.
B. People who drive.

Drivers are those who are in tune with the vehicle and think about their moves before they make them.

People who drive are those who simply need a way to get from a to b. They don’t pay enough attention to what’s going on and they don’t give a damn about driving correctly. They don’t think about what’s best they think about what’s easiest. These are the ones who block traffic trying to merge left because they didn’t pay attention to the 3 different markers telling them the right lane was a right turn only.

I’m in the first category.
I prefer to feel the road. I enjoy driving my 97 Camry more than my tundra even though they’re both automatic.
I can’t wait to get my 99 Tacoma back on the road, either.

 

I’m the same way. I don’t need my truck to have all the same things that I have in my house. It’s a pickup truck, not a castle or mansion. . To pay $100k or close to that for a pickup truck is insane!! Plus, most of the stuff you’ll never use.

but, from a marketing standpoint, I can see why the big 3 are so much fixated on their pickup trucks. That’s what’s selling in America today. Who knows, tomorrow it may be sedans once again.

Nevertheless, I do think that it’s about time for Toyota to give us some needed updates in a new Tundra. I could use a Tundra with better gas mileage, more towing power, better and more comfortable seating among other things. I don’t care about having a refrigerator in my truck. Or have HD tv. Don’t care about my tailgate transforming into 10 different things. Don’t care that my Tundra can go from 0-60 in 2 seconds flat.

unfortunately, if Toyota doesn’t add many of the things that its competitors have in their trucks, sales will very low and they will probably stop making the Tundras, just like many of the other models that they have stopped making over the years.

 

Preach on Tundra-bro! I’m totally with you on that. If it were only up to us loyal customers, Toyota would stop making Tundras! We would have to buy a new Tundra every year or so for them to keep making it. The sales numbers on Tundras are not that great from a business perspective. Toyota needs new first time buyers to support their products. In order for them to get new customers interested in their Tundras for it to make it worth their while. They will definitely have to make some needed changes for that to happen.

 

I’d be pretty embarrassed if my 4X4 pickup truck couldn’t clear a beer can.




If that’s what modern technology gets you, I don’t want anything to do with it.

Couldn't agree more! One of the reasons I switched to a Tundra (from Silverado) was because it felt like a truck. The big 3 make SUVs with a truck bed. They are for the soccer dad. The tundra and heavy duty market are IMO the only true trucks on the market.

Another thing i have always appreciated about the pace Toyota updates and "refreshes" the tundra is that old trucks don't look old. I have a 10 year old truck, but its only 1 generation old, and just doesn't seem to show it's age (relatively speaking). If you arent getting a new GM every three years, it doesnt look recent. I think that has to help Tundra resale value as well, which is nice as an owner.

 

This is an interesting topic. I just recently purchased my Tundra and had the option of any other truck in the same class.
I read several articles and forums with folks saying the Tundra is outdated, lacks technology and gets terrible mpg etc..
After looking into these statements I found for me:
MPG; Yes the mpg isn’t great but it’s a big v8 w/ 6spd 4.30gears , no turbos or gadgets to fail. Straight forward no nonsense. My work commute is 7 miles so mpg isn’t an issue.

Tech: I think this is the biggest misconception, I have ‘18 limited, BSM, Dynamic CC, rctw, front and rear sensors, rear cam, lane departure, heated seats, auto climate, BT , rear window roll down (and the Platinum even more)
How much more tech do I need? Maybe Auto start and push button, CarPlay ? Not a big deal to me.
Outdated: I think the Tundra is one of the best looking , clean styled trucks out there. Others continue to change and add huge wild front end designs (Ram, Rebel, Titan etc.)

In the end I went with what I liked and what I believe is the best truck in my budget and suits my needs for a long time.

Exactly! Agreed. My wife’s ‘11 4runner with a few updates still looks new. 95k and running strong.

 

They sold 900,000 f series in 2018. They sold 118,000 tundras in 2018. Sounds like ford is doing a decent job of knowing what paying customers want. Toyota......... not as much.

That being said I’ll keep my tundra. I'm apparently one of us weirdos that will take less features for reliability. But realize enthusiasts make up the smallest market segment there is.

 

Ford built up a following long before Toyota even dreamed of entering the full size truck market. When I bought my first truck there were 3 choices and it was no contest in my mind. I remained loyal to Ford for almost 30 years. When I get honest answers on mpgs on comparable trucks I think the numbers are fairly insignificant. Big 3 owners love to knock Tundras on mpgs. They don't have much else. Also Toyota truck mfg capacity is limited.

 

Why do you think Tundras retain their value, Looks?

 

I don't care who does it - I just hope that someone makes a decent looking truck again. I don't know what designers are smoking these days, but good gawd they make some ugly-ass vehicles. There is nobody on the market that makes a decent looking truck, IMO. That includes Toyota.

 

Toyota accepts that the Tundra isn't going to compete in sales with the F150 and Silverado/Sierra. So they do what they do best and cater to the loyal Toyota customer by ensuring reliability through a proven product while still making enough cosmetic changes to keep the platform fresh. This also makes for a healthy profit margin on the product. I for one am glad Toyota chooses this business model because I want a timeless vehicle that's reliable; and that not every Tom, Dick, and Harry drives. I would be interested to see what the profit margin is on a new F150 vs a new Tundra.
