    Hey guys,

I’m getting conflicting information on what my truck is capable of towing. When I look in the manual, it says 10,200 lbs. When I go to Toyota.com/owners and use my VIN it says

    “GVWR = 7200 lbs. Payload = 1590 lbs. Tow Capacity = 8100 lbs.”

Sorry, I should know but I’m still trying to learn.

Your truck code is inside the drivers door. Match that up to the owners manual. You technically already did with going to the users group and typing in the VIN Number.

Sounds about right with a CrewMax truck. My 2012 only had a capacity of 1325 lbs, so you are in a way better situation than I was.

There’s some confusion here. Hauling is in the bed, so payload is what matters. 1500 is about the highest you’ll get in a tundra. Towing is pulling a trailer

Thank you. So with that screenshot, it says 10,200 with the *2 being if you have a towing package. My Tundra being the Crew Max 5.7 4x4 with the tow haul button puts it in the towing of 10,200 then, correct? If so, I don’t understand why the Toyota.com/owners says otherwise with stating 8,100 pounds, like it also shows in the screenshot. That’s where I’m getting my confusion.

So I can haul 1590 in the bed and tow 8100 at the same time? What does GVWR = 7200 mean?

    “GVWR = 7200 lbs. Payload =1590 lbs. Tow Capacity = 8100 lbs.”

    No.

You can't have more than 1590 lbs payload. When you tow, part, if not all, of that payload is eaten up by the tongue weight of the trailer you are towing.

GVWR = gross vehicle weight rating. Your truck, fully loaded down, can't weight more than that (that doesn't include trailer weight). GCWR = gross combined weight rating - that is the total weight allowed for your truck, fully loaded, plus your trailer.

That just doesn’t make sense when it says 8100 or 10200.

This is why I asked you to look inside the drivers door.

The capacity of your truck is 1325 lbs.

With the code and having the tow package, you can legally tow 10100 lbs.

Here’s the catch. You will run out of capacity long before hitting the 10100 lbs most likely unless your rather light, nobody with you, and only have 10% tongue weight.

You should feel good about having a pre J2807 rated truck. Your tow rating would have been a lot less.

As TJ said above, 1325 lbs is the most you can carry (payload). And that is assuming you haven't added any mods to the truck. I have just about the same rating on my truck, but in reality is lower because I added aftermarket components which take up some of that payload. It really isn't that difficult. The advertised numbers are not what your specific truck can do necessarily. Always check your door sticker.

Just to add to this for the OP as it is confusing......

Let's say he weighs 200 lbs. and throws 300 pounds of bricks in the bed. He has just reduced his payload down to 825 pounds. 1325-500 = 825

Now, let's say he has a camper that he is pulling in addition to him and the bricks. The camper weighs 5000 pounds and has a tongue weight of 525 pounds. He is fine as far as his towing capacity goes since the truck is rated for 10,100 pounds. However the tongue weight is reduced by 525 pounds so now he has 300 pounds left in the truck..... legally.

So now let's say he has his truck loaded with him, bricks, and towing the camper to the NASCAR Bristol night race in August. He only has 300 pounds left over to work with and he has 3 buddies coming with him to stay in the camper. You better hope your 3 buddies all way under 100 pounds or else you will technically be over your rates payload capacity.

I hope this makes sense to you Albinator.

Towing can get confusing. If you have a spray in bed liner, tonneau cover, etc.... these reduce your payload also.

Now, I am not saying anything illegal or anything at all. Other brands have a much higher payload capacity due to aluminum beds being lighter, etc....

From my experience with newer Fords and ecoboost engines, I much rather be towing a 5000lb. Travel trailer and a bed full of bricks with my Tundra compared to the Fords I have towed with. Heavier Tundra in my opinion handles the heavier stuff much better. A lot of walking and swaying with the others from my experience even though they are rated for more.

I'd venture to say that you were over weight. How much do you weigh? Nerf bars cut into payload. Your flares cut into your payload. Everything you add to your truck that weighs something takes away from your payload.

Your probably right for sure. I no longer do this but when I did I literally traveled like 30 minutes away. No highway eather.

Speaking of mods and stickers, I’ve only had the truck for 1.5 years and haven’t done any mods nor have found mods on it. The only thing is when it needed tires, I put 275’s on it instead of the stock 255’s. But, there is this sticker on my door, which my mechanic nor Toyota dealership doesn’t get since there is no mods on it. Maybe it once did have mods then was put back to stock?

Thank you for all of this; helps me understand much better. It is confusing and I do have a 1966 Kit camper that is 2500 lbs so I definitely have no worries there; it’s just nice to know what I can do if/ when needed. I meant to post about the sticker on this thread but did on another

Hard to tell. Sometimes dealers add nerf bars, aftermarket skids, bedliners, etc.

In the end, if you really truly want to know how much payload you can handle - go take your truck to a CAT scale and get it weighed with a full tank of fuel and all fluids topped off, and you not sitting in it. This is called the curb weight of the vehicle. Then, to find your true payload, simply subtract the curb weight from the GVWR (7200 lbs). The difference is the true payload capability of your truck.

Duh, I should have known that. Great recommendation, thanks! My truck does have the plastic liner in it I actually took it out to clean all of the hay, mud, gravel, etc. that was under it a couple of weeks ago and it definitely didn’t weight that much; probably not even over 45lbs.

Thank you. What is and what does it mean/where does it say it’s a J2807 truck? I just didn’t see that on the stickers picture unless I missed it.

Toyota adopted the J2807 standard for towing in 2011. Your truck's towing capacity was calculated/determined before they adopted the standard.
