Airbags on a TRD

Hey all, long time reader first time poster.

I searched but couldnt quite find a difinitive answer.

Im looking to install airbags on my lifted 04 AC. Two brands, airlift and firestone, both saying the kits are incompatible with the TRD models. Can anyone shed some light as to why? It seems like some people have ran this kit on thier TRDs after doing a bit of searching but I want to be certain.

Current setup is a Toytec Boss coilover kit with the 1.5" AAL in the rear. Ill be carrying a slide in camper all winter, hence the looking into airbags.

Airlifts will not fit. The Firestones will. They fit on my 1st gen with 33s. It was close to the tire, but it fits. I trimmed the bracket some, just to be safe. This is the reason why they say it wont fit TRD, is because they come with a slightly larger tire. Let me see if I can find some pics on my phone.

 

Found it.

 

My wheels have a -12 ET with 33s so even with the bigger tire they stand out a bit more than the stockies. If its just the bracket thats not a problem. The fella at SD Springs was trying to co vince me my frame was different. I didnt think so.

That clarifys everythi g. Thank you so much. Looks like ill be going with the firestones. Do you recommend the daystar pucks? I do wheel from time to time and I hear airbags are not the friendliest thing for that.

 

I used Firestone kit PN 2212. Those specific style bags are narrower.

Yeah the articulation is not the best for them. I think you can stretch and tear them.

I have not ran spacers, only replacement lift coilovers.

 

Im almost certain frames are the same. TRD kit is basically an appearance package with slightly better shocks (subjective), different wheels, fender flares, and a sticker.

Sweet I will give him a ring to discuss setups but im pretty sure im going to go with the daystars and the firestone. Running the daystars will allow me to keep the bags with the lift and wheel too all the while being able to lift the rear a bit when the campers on.

 

I have the coach builder +3’s in the rear with firestone bags and the coach builder airbag spacer kit and it is rock solid.

 

Oh I misunderstood you. No I have not ran airbag spacers. My rear was stock height and the front was 2 inches lift/ leveled. But I imagine extreme articulation like the picture you posted could pose a risk to damaging them.

 

On the firestone system, how far does that top bracket stick out from the frame? That should answer anyones question if it will work on any particular truck.

I'm running 275/55 R20 and I have 5 5/8 inches from frame to tire.

 

Happy gilmore said the Airlift system wont fit but the firestone will. The bracket on the Airlift looks smaller and narrower than the firestones. Anyone have any insight as to why the airlift wouldnt fit?

 

I cant remember exactly where I had found the info, but i did read about multiple people that actually installed the Airlift airbags and said they did not fit. Might have been another forum or Amazon reviews. The Airlift actual bags are larger in diameter I believe than the Firestones because of the type of bag. I had already purchased Airlifts so after reading this I returned them and bought the Firestones. I hadn't realized it, but my buddy had the Firestones on his Tundra with 35s for years with out problems. So after seeing that first hand, I went with those. I checked pretty often for interference, and never saw any. Never any serious off-roading with them though. I was 2wd.

Hmm, these ones say they are compatible with TRD. Are these the ones you spoke to the SD rep about?

FYI I installed Airlift bags on 2 different 1st gen Tundras. No fitment issues.

 

I got my kit and theres an entire hand and a half width between the bracket and the tire.

Time to crack a beer and get to it.

 

Done and done. Pleased with the results. The camper sits so level now.

 

Is that in place of the bump stop or next to it?

Glad to hear the camper is riding level, I've been pulling out all the stops to get mine to ride level on work factory springs.

Nice. Did you use the Daystar cradle kit too?

 

I did use the daystar kit. Id rather not risk ripping the bags when crawling up a trail. I had to use a smaller 3/8 nut and a shorter bolt to mount the cradle to the Ride Rite bracket. The bracket sits so close to the springs that I had to turn the bolt itself upward and mount the nut in the recess of the cradle.
