I don’t know who told you that the diesel was coming but I’ve heard this stuff for quite a few years now and it’s never going to happen. If I’m wrong great but it didn’t work for Nissan and I doubt that it’s gonna work for Toyota either. There is no big moneymaking segment for this. The price point of these trucks will be so close that most people will just ask for one of the big three that has a reputable diesel. Toyota has a decent diesel in other countries but as stated before, the EPA stuff in the United States is a whole different ball game for Toyota. They’re not going to risk losing money on that.

If it was, I hope to hell they increase the payload capacity for the vehicle as most diesel engines weigh more than stock engines and detract from the payload.

The competition has 1000 lb ft in their heavy duty trucks but the half-tons are in the 400 range, so 550 would actually be tops in that segment.

Nissan did themselves no favors with 1) poor reliability and 2) overall truck capabilities that were not compelling (payload, towing, fuel capacity, etc.). The gas-powered Titan XD whooped the diesel’s ass on TFLTruck’s towing test, which is just super embarrassing. Also, I continue to be a fan of the way the Titan XD is styled, but I can see why I’d be in the minority on that one...

We had a diesel 5 speed Hilux in Afghanistan as one of our admin/ loaner vehicles. That little truck was amazing, in first it felt like it could climb a wall. It was by no means fast, i doubt it would go 110 kmh but it felt like a little tank. Chugging along.

Long story short. Cummins made the engine to sell to the US Military as drop ins for the Hummer/ V and other smaller vehicles. The Government decided not to switch over and offered it up to any car company who wanted it. Nissan bought the rights to it. It is smaller than the other Cummins, we call it the baby diesel.

2020 Toyota Tundra Diesel Release Date and Price
The 2020 Toyota Tundra will come next year. The more precise date is yet to find, yet we are very certain it will take place somewhere in the 2nd fifty percent of the next year. Price needs to remain practically the exact same, which indicates that the base design will possibly walk around $32.500.

Well, just had family coming back from Europe, interesting enough sales of diesel automobiles has dwindled. The push is for hybrid motors gas. So hybrid motors in Toyota truck won’t be a surprise either.

My 1996 Ford F250 did... traded it in on my current Tundra though. It only had 145,000 on the odometer.

If they do make one I might be able to talk the wife into it ... for her. She loves her diesels! Diesel Sequoia would be pretty badass too! Or a full size diesel Lexus SUV. She has a X5 now and the previous 2 cars she's owned have also been diesel (previous gen X5 and a 535d) so she'd go for it.

Unfortunately no one but Jaguar seems to be making a luxury diesel SUV anymore in the US and she doesn't have the patience to deal with weekly visits to a Jaguar dealership for fixes.

I liked the Titan too but the real world numbers and unfortunate reliability were the issues.

My buddy is a sales rep for Chrysler and he said that the 5.0 Cummins engine was such crap that Chrysler wouldnt even consider putting it in their vehicles. That says a lot when Chrysler won't even touch it

So two different types of wheels (front/rear) so does it carry two different spares?

When I saw it, it didn't have a spare mounted under the bed. It was really just a show truck put together by toyota for shows. We have a booth at the would ag expo every year and I was there when they unloaded the truck. They just parked it and it sat there all week and then it went right back on a truck to leave.
