How do you secure you tools/gear?

I know I know... Just buy a shell or tonneau cover. Well I'm working on it alright!
Anyway I'm just looking for ideas and to see how other people secure their stuff in their beds. I have some ammo cans that work well, and I'm thinking I can cable lock my shovel and water/ fuel cans, but who knows what else I'll mount or throw in there and having ideas on securing it is never a bad thing.

Yeah I'm asking for it and I know. I expect to see bed mounting systems that are $500 and people saying just buy this $100 mount for this $300 axe and call if a day. Well I'm a 1st Gen guy and we are cheap.

 

I have a camper shell and I’m still struggling to solve the storage problem. I have a couple wolf packs that work pretty well and have them strapped to the side. Currently I’ve got a couple pelican cases I use as well but I’d like to move to something lighter / bigger but I’ve been striking out. If I could get a pair of giant wolf packs that would be awesome but they don’t exist. Alu boxes seem nice but the price tag sure doesn’t. Pretty much any tub / bin / container I’ve found is pretty cheaply built and won’t last long.

2 cheap Plano boxes ratchet strapped to the front hooks for all my tools. Holds really good.

 

Good good. Now what about locking this stuff up?
Here's how j have my bed set up now. I have some tabs I need to weld on the ammo can to lock it and I have another ammo can to mount. I also have a propane tank that gets mounted on the lower right corner of the shot in a mount that I redesigned from a tank mount I designed for work. I can figure out how to cable lock most of it I think. I swear I saw a cool link to his someone made their own cable setup for locking gear, but for the life of me I can't find it.
As for tool storage I'm thinking a wolfpack with a cable lock setup or my current husky box locked similarly.

 

I have a pair of ammo cans bolted to my bed and use quick fists to secure my shovel. Quick fists are great for random items like that, also works for mag lights or fire extinguishers.

One larger box, instead of the two small ones.

Locking clasp (circled) to hold the folded boards together so the whole thing can be carried by the tool box handle.

 

You could always do the "pile crap up so that nothing can move and theres too much there for any would be thieves to spot the stuff worth stealing" method


This is pretty much what I'm working with, minus the jack. I have a bottle jack and small pair of stands in one of the ammo boxes. I did have the jack mounted for years but took it out when I bought a house.

I like this idea. When you posted the first setup I thought you were joking. Kinda like hey I just put a 2x4 in here and let stuff slide around. Since you posted more detail it all makes sense. As long as the 2x4 is tight, then that can isn't going anywhere. Not bad.

 

It’s hinged from the back side so stuff I put again the tailgate won’t flex the board as it pushes forward.
And it is very snug in there, additionally where the hinge helps to really pop it into place.
The tool box is bolted to the board so it acts as a carrying handle.

 

I like it! I might borrow some of that for my front 2x4. Mine is pretty janky but it has held my water jug in place for over a year now. Damn handy having 7 gallondy of water on hand unless it's frozen. I actually have been thinking about a little rv style tank heater pad to keep it from freezing solid in the winter. Maybe one that only works when the truck is on. Basically if I drive an hour a day it might keep it from turning into an ice block.

 

I first tried a custom build 1x6 & 2x4 lumber box in my T100, it worked but it was not practical or easily stored when not needed. So, for the last 15+ years I have been using a Cargo-Gate to keep gear from moving around while I drive. I took this picture when I was running around topless, waiting for LEER to send me a new cap. The cap arrived last week, and now everything is secure & dry.

 

I use a Plano box and another Rubbermaid tote, with one of those torsion bars to keep them in place. Don’t know how you could secure them without a tonneau cover though.

 

The way I drive off-road that stuff would still be everywhere. Looks practical though.

 

I have no serious off-road experience, but I do drive the truck hard and go through the twistiest as fast as conditions allow. As long as I pack it tight the weight stays in place, and I have a second gate that I can add if I need it. The rubber bed mat also helps keep things from sliding around.

 

Is the bracket holding your tool box custom? I have a similar box no bracket.

 

Its the bracket that came with my swing case when I bought it a couple years ago. Maybe they have since changed the bracket?

 

This is what I have for now. I need to buy another jerry can holder for the other side. I have a tonnaeau that keeps it mostly dry. I want to come up with a better system though. I have a few ideas.

 

Not full tonneau compatible...but may be able to replicate with a floor mounted/ non-wing box. Keeps gear dry & unmotivated miscreants out.
