    Hey,

I can’t say I know too much about building out the first Gens. They seem like they would be easier and have cheaper mods available to them, especially in the rear end given the straight axle. If no one has mentioned, be wary of the platinums as they have an air bagged rear end, and if you want to lift them, you will have to tear all that out. I had an ‘07 Platinum prior to this one, and that was one of the reasons I got rid of it and built this one instead.

In general I think the sequoia is an awesome rig, so much room and a very capable vehicle off-road, especially for those of us with multiple kids that require regular hauling around.

What are you looking to do or any other questions I could help with?

    Cheers,

Thanks for the heads up re: the platinums and the rear airbag, that is good to know in advance.

I have ruled out ruled out 4runners, & tacomas since I need more room for the wife and the dogs.

I like the size of the tundra, but the Sequoia seems to have what I need in terms of space for car camping, v8 power, and a locking rear dif for overlanding rugged terrain, but I am sort of confused by what years are most optimal in terms of my off roading needs.

I even checked wikipedia and became even more confused than I was before.

any light you could shed in the subject would be a big help, and don't be shy to tell me: 'look at these years, and don't look at those years'. ;)

    thanks,
    bd

Well for reference, that Black one I posted was an ‘07 and the gold one I am now working on is an ‘08. 1 year difference, but a world of change. Toyota typically overhauls each of their line-ups every 10 years. For Sequoia, 2008 is the first year they offered their badass 5.7L V8 that pushes 381 horses and moved over to a timing chain rather than a belt which requires replacing every 90k miles. This engine is still being used in their 218 tundras and sequoias and has way more power then their previous 4.7L V8 that was in the first gens which only had 276.

Also, I am not sure they come with a rear locker. Both of mine have had a middle locker only. Which is completely different, and from my understanding basically gives the truck TRUE 4WD, rather than just AWD.

Aside from the engine, and the rear independent suspension, I believe all the other changes were basically beautification and safety features.

As far as specific years being better than others, I am not sure if there are any “bad years” just need to figure out what generation you want: 1st or 2nd.

Check out this 2nd gen build and you can get a better idea of what can be done with the newer sequoias.
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/gnt-tree-build-2008-sequoia.39353/page-4#post-1319666

Happy to chat about available suspension components as well if your trying to figure out what would work best.

    Cheers,

Finally got the 2.5” OME coils installed! Now I just need to upgrade these tires:

Found some lightly used 295/70r18 ST MAXX’s that I’ll pick up this weekend.

    Cheers!

Thank you sir! Unfortunately looks like I have to run some spacers to clear any tire with a larger diameter than what I am currently running. Need to come-up on some Method wheels or something of the sort with the +20mm offset, these stock wheels and their +60 just wont fly.. its a shame, cause they do look good =\... anywho, doubt I’ll ever catch up to your mods, but keep up the inspirational work!

Great looking tree. I just bought one myself. Curious what roof rack carrier you're running? Thanks

Thank You! I am using the Large Roof Basket from Tyger. Have had it four a couple years and has held up great. Didn’t apply any weathering treatment on it and it hasn’t had any issues with rust. It is definitely bigger or roughly the same as the largest Yakima or Thule basket, but for a fraction of their cost.

Also, that Tyger emblem is just a screen print on the front. You can easily remove with a solvent of some kind if you don’t like, or just cover with a sticker!

    Couple updates:

    • I took advantage of the RCI Labor Day deal, and snagged a front skid plate.
      • Thing looks amazing and definitely way stronger than the stock. Install was pretty easy even by myself (pictures to follow soon!)
    • A big thanks to @silverhack who hooked me up with the Tundras.com network and picked up some 295/70r18 Cooper S/T MAXXs
    4F09939F-04C8-40BB-9CBD-23A6D8ECBA9B.jpg
Now I just need to get these transported back to the Bay Area and get them installed.

    • Spidertrax 1.25 Spacers waiting to get installed as well to complete my tire/wheel set-up (photos to come as well once I can get these on with my tires in the coming weeks)

    Cause everyone likes photos!!

It was a busy morning!.. only had to take the small mudflaps in the front side of the front wheel wells... otherwise no rubbing!

    295/70r18s look great on Sequoias!

Need some guidance in swapping in the rear springs which tool exactly was it that enabled you to swap the OME coil in?

    Hey,

I did it myself the first time to put in spacers, but that only required the spring to be compressed and not removed fully. I had to take it to the local shop to do the rear springs. Even they struggled with the springs and they specialize in 4x4 upgrades and lifts. They ended up ordering a $400 (so they told me) clam style compressor in order to complete the job. I guess they had a smaller compressor that worked to get the stock coils out, but then it couldn’t handle the the new OME coils that were being installed. I would suggest having a shop do it if you have a place you can trust. Those springs are damned scary. I would do front coils again and build out some 5100s or 6112s, but would probably forgo doing those rear coils ever again, even just for a spacer. If you see my pics from installing the spacers you will see the issue they cause with the axle dropping and losing the angle to get the spring straight up and down back in the seat...

Yeah it’s insane when it comes to installing those rear. Managed to get one spring in and seated. However, it’s now giving me a hard time on letting me bolt the rear UCA back into the knuckle. The side without the spring installed gives me wiggle room to play with.

I’m currently thinking of leaving the rear stock height and leveling the front with 5100 on the first collar (.8’”) lift. What are your thoughts?

    Hey,

Really depends what you are going for. If your worried about being level, I would suggest measuring the height of your rear end and front end on level ground before starting work.

Follow the diagram below and do that for all 4 fenders and see what your looking at. Then assume you add an additional inch to front and see if you will be level... I am sure this will be just fine, but better to check before hand. Also I forget who keeps circulating lift specs for adjustable coilovers for Tundras/Sequoias, but I believe these C clip shocks provide more lift on Sequoias than on a tundra, so the .8” lift may be more like 1.0”

I’m looking for comfort before anything. We use our sequoia to travel across states frequently. All 4 struts are shot I definitely want a level at minimum. Thank you for the insight!

    Update.

Removed the wheel spacers and installed the Fuel wheels that came on my tundra when I purchased it. Also continued to delete chrome and got black handles and mirror caps installed

Also have not liked the 5125 shocks in the rear too much bouncing. New 5100s are in the garage and now just need to get installed. Fingers crossed they fix it

looks good! I have bilstein 5100 front and rear on my Sequoia, rides good even with toyo open country RT tires.
