DIESEL Tundra

Okay sounds good, well, that’s what he told me last Saturday when I picked up my truck. I did a double take and asked “ are you serious? A diesel option?”....I bought my truck from them 6 years ago in Katy, Texas.

But you know, anyhow, I’m excited about what they can roll out.

 

I agree. I get sent "Toyota Intersection" surveys regularly and the last one was all about gas/hybrid designs. They may have included some reference to diesels but the G/H combo was prominent.

Why would Toyota NOT go the hybrid route with all the experience they have with them? I'll bet that I can't even name all the models they make that have a variant.

No one can make a dependable Diesel for the American market. No one.

That exhaust fluid is stopping everything up.

 

We are going to buy a diesel Tacoma in Mexico...4 door, 4wd, 4 cyl diesel, manual transmission. Around 22K..Chicken tax would apply should I import to the states but I can dual insure it and drive it here with Mexico plates.

 

They didn’t really bring the Supra back. It’s a BMW with a Toyota badge.

 

This^^^^...Toyota was considering the Cummins but Dodge made a big stink about Toyota possibly using the Cummins. Yes, the Hino diesel would be better but the Hino not ready for prime time emission wise...Going to go watch ice melt now due to climate changes.

 

How much more are you willing to pay extra for that diesel Taco to meet USA safety and emission requirements?????

 

Not so much Cummins reliability problems.....lack of Nissan diesel techs didn't help and an over priced ugly ass truck...

I don’t have an answer. Certainly the 25% chicken tax would cover something, and in my area diesels are not subject to emissions. I know nothing about safety requirements but I will trust Toyota to build a safe vehicle wherever they build. I just don’t know, but as a long time loyal Toyota fanboy I want to drive every one of their uber cool vehicles!

 

Very kuul for sure. I had fellow Marines buy 240Z's in Japan real cheap..got quite expensive retrofitting to meet USA safety standards. Cost them twice what they played back then to get them legal. By the way, the 240Z sold here was branded a "Fair Lady" in Japan...

Different brand, but My wife had a 71, 240, factory orange with hideous blue seats, dual mukunis, they were modeled after the Ferrari 240? Our local dealer has -3- brand new 71s, not for sale rather hidden ..

 

I don’t see a Tundra coal burner happening ever. Especially now since Nissan dipped their toes in the diesel fuel and soon quickly realized the sales could not justify continuing production.

 

Did the Supra really come back? I thought Toyota is just selling a BMW with a Toyota badge. I have been looking for a 98 Turbo Supra for years.

 

Tatsuya Tada from Toyota admitted that they could have developed their own inline 6, but it would have pushed the Supra price point too high. The Supra wouldn't be affordable for a wide audience. The car still has to be profitable. Also, Tada likes the BMW inline 6. Supra shares the engine platform with the Z4, but Toyota tuned it to their specifications and liking.

I am in agreement though, the 98 Supra is a novelty. The 4th generation was the best. I had a 99 Pontiac Trans Am with LS1 v8, and I went up against TT Supras. After second gear, they were gone and the 4th gen supras were really sweet looking. After 98, I did not think a Supra would be produced ever again.

In person, the new Supra seems really small, but it is clearly a roadster for handling and turns but it has no manual trasmission. It hovers around 54k price tag, and I would rather have a Tundra for that price point. However, some tuners are already doing manual tranny swaps and boosting the turbo over 620 hp.

I do like Toyota's Army Green color. I thought online the color was kind of too glossy, but in person it was a dark green and still brought out the lines in the truck. I thought putting some Methods or SCS Rays would look sweet. Cheers to whomever can get that color!

 

I wonder what the cost/benefit analysis, if any, in a 1/2ton Toyota diesel would be. But then a 3/4 ton Tundra would have to be completely re-engineered: frame, axles, suspension. I don't think it's just a straight upgrade.

 

The BMW inline 6 is a great engine. It's the way the BMW cars are engineered that's the problem. When my oilpan gasket was leaking, I had to drop the front end to get to it. To change a headlight, I had to remove the wheel, fender liner, and bumper....twice. After I fixed one bulb, the other went out.

 

With the competition putting out right at 1000 ft lb torque, that 550 would be lame as hell and a sore spot for the owners with the cost of diesel and bang for the buck.

 

It's what they hinted at, at the meeting.

They'll never give cement dates until autoshow reveals but they said still not the 2021 as being the change over.
2022 I'd look more towards

 

Basically, no retooling is going on at this point. We're already into the 2020 model year. You're right about them holding back any real news. They are not wanting to kill the sales pipeline on the existing model that could happen. Even higher ups have no clue as of yet. 2021 3rd quarter will begin the 2022 model year.

It may very well be a 2022 model year (late 21) before the next gen tundra arrives. Just hit the news last week that the funding for new tooling was just approved for the Texas plant. It would be surprising and impressive if that plant could be retooled and trucks rolling off the line a year from now.

My bets is that there will Three main power trains:

twin turbo v6: 375hp, 425 tq
Twin turbo v6 hybrid: 425hp 450tq
NA V8 either revised 5.7 or smaller 5.0 400hp 420tq

I would guess on an 8sp vs a 10sp.

I also wouldn’t be shocked if there’s a heavy duty version (although perhaps I’m just dreaming...)
