I was born in Lincoln, NE 63 years ago. It would get so cold up there, the little truck I had back then would not start in the winter with heavier / thicker oil. Hence straight 5W oil and a oil dipstick heater to keep it warm over night! Now I live in Hot Hot Houston and the thickness of the oil isn't an issue. Other than all the opinions of the people down here that work on my vehicles. Which is why I like to research it and see what people who actually own what I have....recommends. :D

A dang cornhusker! Heh...heh...for what it's worth, I drove up to Scottsbluff last July with my grandson to get my Barcelona Red topper. Nice place actually. Lots of fracking corn everywhere. Nice people too. Why Tejas now?

It’s just conversation. Who cares if it happens 100 times. Maybe someone will teach me some new nugget I never thought of before.

I agree with the earlier comparisons to energy drinks. The simple fact is that in today’s market there is almost no difference between any synthetic oil on the autozone shelf. Even the 4 different mobile 1 products are probably within a 1% difference of each other.

Add on- i think when it comes to oil changes, we obsess too much about the mileage intervals. I think the type of roads we travel, the time spent accelerating vs coasting, outside temps, etc all play a much bigger factor than miles.

Driving 10k miles in Nebraska is a hell of a difference in engine wear than 10k miles in the rocky mountains. It would be false to say both drivers should follow the manufacturer’s manual recommendation.

Exactly! I'm an old fart and I learn something here every day. Even at work. Once you close your mind about learning new things.....need I say more?

My mom and step dad moved here in 1975. I decided to move down here and go to work for my step dad. We have a wallpaper installation business. I started out hanging wallpaper. Did that until 1994, had back surgery and my step dad told me I climbed my last ladder. Now I do all the bookkeeping and handle all the office work since my mom retired.

I recently got married for the second time, my first husband died of cancer. Planning on moving to Southern MO in 2 years to retire. When I move up there, I will have to consider cold starts on the truck in the winter. LOL

Thank YOU! Where I live, it's hot in the summer. The winters are nothing like they were when I lived in NE. Also, I do a lot of stop and start driving on my truck. Lots and Lots of traffic here in Houston. And it's FLAT! No hills. In 2 years, we plan on moving to Southern MO where there are lots of hills. And it will be much colder in the winter months. I agree with you, where you live and the type of driving you do, makes a big difference on the engine. My dad and step dad use to always tell me, it's good for a vehicle to take it out on the highway at times and drive it like you stole it.

Cancer sucks for sure. I'm beating it so far. MO is nice. Don't ever totally retire. You will find something to do. Get a place in MO where you can raise some chickens or something. Grow a big garden. Keep busy. I'm not retiring anytime soon. I'm raising an almost 5 year old grandson. He's asleep now. Beer and quiet time now for me...

Yes, cancer does suck! Will keep you in my prayers. My new hubby and I are wanting property of some kind. We are actually going up there to visit some of my family next weekend. Will be taking the new truck on a road trip. Looking forward to seeing how it does on the highway. When I get back, will probably change the oil. One question.....what is a drain plug gasket? Is that something only Tundra's have? I used to change my own oil years ago. Bought oil and the oil filter. Someone mentioned an drain plug gasket. I know you take the drain plug out to drain the oil. Its been years since I changed my own oil and years ago, you just removed the drain plug (a bolt in the drain pan) and then put it back in. Never dealt with a drain plug gasket. I'm going to have to google that.

I love these threads, seriously. Back in the day I used 20w-50 on a 22R for almost 300 thousand miles.

Toyota's drain plug gasket actually is made of aluminum and has old-time gasket material on each surface. They've been exactly the same since I began owning Toyotas in 1986. Some call them "crush" washers; it is unlikely that they "crush" because the center core appears to be stamped out of sheet aluminum and will have zero deformation when torqued. The gasket material on the surfaces is what does the sealing.

My experience is you don't have to change the gasket every oil change, but replacing on alternate changes would insure against dripping. With Amazon Prime, you can get the washers and Toyota filters in a couple of days. Toyota makes cartridge filters in all different lengths for different applications, and the part numbers are nearly all identical...make sure you get the Tundra filter that ends in "A4". They should come with the filter housing and filter housing drain plug o-rings. Those need to be replaced every change, and if the filter doesn't have them, you'll need to purchase separately. More filters you buy, the cheaper they are...buy ten on Amazon and you're down to $4.60. I bought five when I got the truck...at my age, I'll probably be cutting back to two packs. :D

@Texas Girl Mobil 1 0W-20, Toyota OEM filter, let's see your Tundra too, also some members have on here, I like it cause it's no mess, look up Fumoto valve, I love it, and the guy changing your oil, how much he charging you?, Only asking cause it's easy to do and save you money and you know it's done right, I don't trust anyone to do, but I have had it done because I was out of town for work and I didn't think my MR light came on so it's been done a couple of times, but I do on my own now

Yeah, well that's marketing bs...that's a vortex generator that prevents wind noise generated by the formation of laminar flow between the mirror and the body. Same thing on the tail lights...Toyota must have figured out they had isolated noise problems, and ergo...vortex generators. Honestly...I'm not making this up..."If I'm lyin', I'm dyin". o_O :D

Feel free to ask the questions you need answered.

Toyota uses Mobil 1 blend, and depending on location, recommends 0w20 or 5w20 in certain conditions. I personally just used the recommendation inside your owners manual.

Believe it if you want, but I have a BS in Aerospace Engineering, and I can say with confidence  that the influence of those aerodynamic forces on fuel mileage of a 3 ton truck will not be measurable in a wind tunnel. Their sales guys had to come up some "good" reason for the customer when they asked about those little warts all over the truck.

A little heat and bs in some threads is a good thing. :D

It's Saturday. We're having a little fun. Congrats on your...DD214. If we're lucky, education starts after we leave college.

What is a DD214 anyway, Jeremy?...DD in the military means "Dishonorable Discharge".

Edit @jeremyd: For those that don't know, a DD214 is the form you get for completing your commitment to US Armed Forces, and it indicates the conditions you left under. Dishonorable discharge is the least used on that form, with "Honorable Discharge" being the most prevalent. Jeremy, I salute your service to your country. God help us if we run out of patriots. :oldglory:

2015 Tundra 5.7 CrewMax TSS Off Road
When I had the guy change the oil in my RAM, it was around $95. The RAM used 7 quarts of oil. I think the Tundra uses 8... yes?

At this point in time, I haven’t even talked to him about this truck. But when I tell him 0W-20, he is going to tell me to run 10W-30. That’s what he always wanted me to use in the Dodge. When the RAM started the Hemi tick, we did so many things trying to fix the ticking noise. At one point the exhaust manifold bolts were the problem. 2 on the drivers side were broken. The ticking went away but came back within 1000 miles. So then we did a de-sludge to the engine oil. Put a solvent in the oil, drove it for 5-7 miles. Drained the oil and put new oil and Lucas oil treatment in it. He told me to drive it a couple of days and see if the noise went away. Didn’t help. So then we changed the oil again and put 20W-50 Havoline racing oil in it. Another guy who builds hot rods and race cars told me to try that. He said if the noise went away my problem was more than likely lifters and the cam. He said if it didn’t go away or got worse it was deeper in the engine. Well after the racing oil, the noise was still there. I got rid of the tick... I sold the damn truck and got the Tundra.

With this Tundra, I just want to do what’s right for the truck. And before I went and talked to the guy about using what the manufacturer recommends ( 0W-20), I wanted to first come here and see what everyone here is using. Which is why I posted this thread.
