Oil Filter help needed....well right now

im doing my first oil change. Bought a TRD oil filter. OEM one has no gaps at the top. TRD does.....does this matter ?

 

Well I think it’s because the TRD filter has its own metal liner. Anyway....it’s done and runs so I guess it’s fine!

 

Go get different filters. It’s been proven that Toyota filters are one of the worse for letting crap get through. A Napa gold would be better than any Toyota filter. I use amsoil filters which is rated for 98.7% efficiency at 20 microns. Toyota don’t even come close to that. Napa gold would be much better than a “trd” stamped yota filter. I think Toyota’s filter is something like 60% at 20 microns

I agree with you on this. You can get a filter with the highest filtration but then you’ll get a lower flow rate. You can’t move oil through a solid piece of paper it has to be porous. The only way to maintain a proper flow rate is with more pleats and there is only so much room for that, and that costs money. It’s a smoke and mirrors trick. I have the best filtration. Mine is better than yours. There’s guys on here with tundras that probably have 400,000 miles and they use a factory oil filter. I guess if you wanna buy a “feeling of better” then so be it.

The OEM filter is designed for the truck.

 

I’ve used both as well. Between k&n, trd, and oem there seems to be wild difference in oil pressure. Flow rates definitely make a difference

 

I've had TRD filters installed on every oil change. I bought a handful of them during the sale for like 6 dollars a piece. Designed by Toyota for our engine, seems legit to me.

 

The trd oil filter is very very close to the amsoil filter might even be made in same place just adding the trd stamp...very very good filter

Good to know. I use the TRD. And since I only change the oil about once a year because of my low mileage, it doesn’t hurt paying a few dollars more.

 

Basically they all perform the same if they’re not super cheap junk. Change every year or 10k miles when you change the oil.

 

I’m in the same boat, I don’t put a ton of miles on my truck and it’s slot of stop and go so I figured the length going in between oil changes justified the better filter, if I drove a lot more and accumulated miles a lot quicker I might of just done the standard Toyota filter

 

I would really be interested in some data between oil pressure of the trd and standard filter, think it would be nice to know the difference
