Anyone know why Toyota has 5 lug nuts on full size Tundra truck wheels and 6 lug nuts on the smaller Tacoma truck wheels?

The Tundra has 14mm studs compared to 12mm studs on the Tacoma

That's a reasonable explanation. I wonder if Toyota just didn't want people to be able to put Tundra wheels on Tacomas and vice versa? Basically the opposite of car companies like GM where you can put freaking camaro wheels on the S10 truck

Not at all the case. That's engineering. It's all about optimizing the cross-sectional stresses in pounds per square inch to lug bolts in standard metric thread sizes. The loads on Tundra lug bolts would exceed typical steel material strength allowables if six 12mm lug bolts were used. If they go up to the next standard thread size lug bolt (14mm), six lug bolts are overkill and the material strength is not being utilized properly; i.e. why go to the expense and trouble of installing six lug bolts when five can meet the load requirements?

OK that's fine and all but Toyota does some quirky things IMHO like the Tundra oil filter that no one else uses and is old school in order to basically force your average person to go to the dealership for an oil change. Also, don't other manufacturers use 6 lug bolts/nuts on their truck wheels yet Toyota uses 5 on their full size truck and 6 on their midsize-to-small truck?

You're right...it's a conspiracy and Toyota is out to get you by only using five lug bolts. :transformer: :D

Look at it this way, you saved money on lug nuts. I had to buy 4 more. :spending:

lol, fair enough! What I do like about Toyota is it's not trying to save $ by going all modular and trying to cut costs and increase profits (like Volkswagen) by forcing modularity in their car components across all platforms

There’s a right tool for the job. You use the right tool. There’s nothing wrong with modularity and conformity if it’s right for the application.

Can you give a specific example of how “forcing modularity in car components” has made Volkswagen produce an inferior product? They aren’t for me after my gti sunroof fell in and hit me in the head driving down 635 but the VWs are pretty nice all around, and that’s the only problem I ever had.

Uh-oh...You obviously haven't heard the rumors. Something about the new Gen Tacoma and Tundras being built on the same platform, and in the same plant!? I'm telling you, they're a step ahead of you, and out to get you. It's not paranoia if they're really out to get you. :D
