Just got my oil changed and put in Mobil synthetic. Question is, is that what Toyota recommends?

Like every car company, Toyota recommends you only do services and dealerships with toyota fluids and parts. Check the manual, make sure oil meets the standards it requires, and you should be good.

Hey cool man thanks. I’ve heard it’s not a good idea to go back to conventional after you go synthetic. You heard other wise?

Sythentic oil and conventional oil affect the seals a bit differently. I've heard the same thing you have, and honestly it makes no difference to me if it would be harmful or not. Synthetic oil flows so much better in all situations I see zero point in conventional oil. YMMV.

FYI Your Tundra should have had synthetic oil from day one. They come from the factroy with it. Wait, they do now, IDK for a 2016.

Your tundra is full synthetic oil, 0W-20.

I buy my oil from dealership, it's the lowest cost around, genuine toyota oil at $7 a quart! Out the door with oil, filter, and new drain plug gasket $60!

Confirming that your should be running full synthetic 0W20.

I myself have run Mobil 1 brand since I changed the factory oil. Have sent 3 samples to Blackstone Labs and all 3 reports have come back gooood.

Their oil is made by Mobil 1, and regular off the shelf mobil 1 will work. But if you can get the genuine toyota oil for the same or less...why wouldn't you.

Also I read on this forum that particular detergents are in the toyota oil vs. The off the shelf mobil 1, exclusive oil formula for their vehicles

I've read the same thing about the "particular" detergents used in Toyota motor oil vs "regular " Mobil 1 but no one here has provided any reference to what these illusive additives are. Bob the oil guy and similar sights claim there is no difference other than the usual spiel that car manufacturers state in their owners manual to use their products such as motor oil. Same with antifreeze, oil filters, air filters, differential fluids, etc..

Good thing is that I went and had my first oil change and when they went down to replace the oil filter, they said they had a hard time removing the plastic housing because it was “stuck”.

They replaced mine with a metal one. They took so long with trying to remove the old one that they comped my oil change. Come out ahead on this one.

A dealer did that???. That is a common mod, but usually done by owners and not the dealer. They must have destroyed the plastic housing, and were scrambling for a replacement to get your truck out of the shop.

Only one thing to worry about now...Did they retrofit the Tundra perforated center pipe to the new metal housing instead of simply installing the metal housing off the shelf? The metal housing is a Toyota part number, but it's actually for a shorter filter (Venza?). The "short" center tube in the metal housing will lead to filter collapse at the top when used with the Tundra filter (longer). Better ask some followup questions to see if they or you have essential additional work to head off a mini-disaster.

Oh man. I didn’t know this. It wasn’t the dealer, it was an oil change shop here in town.

Yea they said the plastic was too tight in the oil pan and they could not get it off. I didn’t know if the middle tube that needs to be there.

I guess there’s gota be a thread on here that has pictures

I can assure you that is not the case. Manufacturers typically select a brand/line of oil as "oem", sometimes with rebranding. Extremely rare to go the other way around and it'd be on something far more exotic than a Tundra where an existing product doesn't exist.

This Tundra is about the only maint manual I've ever read that said as long as you are using synthetic 0W-20 that it's fine to go 10K. My 2010 Inifinity I just sold recommended 7500. I ran it to 10k before changing the Mobil 1. Sold it with 235K on the clock and never a problem. My father always said get one brand of oil and only use that brand. All my good cars have gotten Mobil 1 for the last 20 years. I run to 10K and change.

Mobil 1 is awesome. My personal preference is Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic. It uses natural gas as a base, rather than crude. I've found it to really do a great job on -28 celcius (-13F) winter startups here in Canada, flows well and has great engine cleaning ability. Used it for 8 years on my previous vehicle and it ran like a top the day I sold it. I won't use anything else. Plus, it goes on sale at Walmart for $24 CDN for a 5 Quart jug.

On a separate note, anyone who gets their oil changes done at the dealer, you may want to ask if your getting a full synthetic oil, or a blend. The Toyota dealer I used to work for would fill vehicles with a Castrol blend - cheaper for them, but never did tell the customers.

I've heard about this. It's a real synthetic as in synthesized. Probably a little less paraffins in it to lower the cloud point for cold weather use

As far as when I used oil change shops, I watched them pour it from the container. Now that I have a good working area after moving out of a neighborhood, I'm back to changing my own oil and saving $50. I'll take it back to O'reillys or throw it on my semi annual tree limb burning/bonfire

In that case, they probably used a universal "Toyota" oil filter housing like the one below made by Dorman. These can be available in any parts store. The Dorman housing has a little rougher appearance, but is identical to the Toyota housing in all respects. Note that the Dorman housing includes three different center tubes to cover all Toyota applications. Because of the Tundra filter length, I believe the Tundra tube would be the long one in the center. If your oil change place used the Dorman, they had to select the right center tube for the Tundra filter length.

All I know is, the 3 tundras so far; that have exceeded 1 million miles were all serviced at local toyota dealerships. And if they use this stuff, and it costs less than the auto parts store...

    I rest my case.

I’ll need to creep underneath and see if I can spot a model number. I believe they went to the Toyota place cause Oreillys didn’t have the part.

I get Mobile1 0W-20 extended performance from Walmart for about $22-25 a jug...5 quarts, but I use an OEM filter. So it cost me about $52-60 and I have 2 quarts left over for top off, and towards the next oil change. Bonus, my wife’s car takes the same oil, whenever I find it on sale I stock up.

Not saying what you’re doing is wrong by any means, but there is nothing special about Toyota oil, it’s just rebranded Mobile1. And since 0W-20 is always synthetic, I would probably snatch up the best deal I could find as long as it’s 0W-20. And really, if you want the best shit available, Amsoil all day IMHO.

The toyota oil is Mobil Super 0w20 (different from mobil 1 but also available at retail). My dealer uses mobil 1 though, and I've seen ones that use castrol too. It's whatever meets the spec and easiest/cheapest to get so there's no telling what the million mile dealer service departments used.

Thanks for the help guys. Gotta love this tundra forum.

I think I’ll do my own next time. These guys said it was $124 for that comped oil change. So I think they might have been trying to screw me.
