Valve cover caskets

Found a couple of leaks and had to do surgery

Just remember, its 20in/lb, not 20ft/lb. Otherwise it'll be RIP VC bolts...

What's that convert to? I only have a cheap torque wrench from Harbor Freight.

 

Is your HF t wrench in in/lbs or ft/lbs? If ft/lbs then you need to get an in/lbs t wrench.

 

1 foot=12 inches so if you only have a ft/lb torque wrench it would be 1.6ft/lb which you probably wont be able to set your torque wrench to. Grab the in/lb torque wrench next time you are at HF, it even comes with a nice carrying case!!

 

Ft lbs. Sounds like I need a new one. I honestly don't typically look up torque specs and just do stuff by feel. Probably not the smartest.

 

It's best to factory torque things. Might save you a lot of grief.

 

Yeah, and an in/lb tq wrench is probably gonna be 1/4 drive. So I had mine set to 240in/lb. Snap!

 

My casket is fine but I’m getting a little leaking from my
valve covers. I would like to have my V/C powdercoat red.
I haven’t read that others do that. Has anyone done that?

 

I think @empty_lord did his. I did mine on my SHO, along with the intake manifold. It's not to expensive.

 

They look good. $100 for both to be done. Guy did a damn fine job too

 

Mine were leaking and would smell like burned oil after each drive
I went to replace them and the bolts were hand tight from the previous owner! Just tightened am down and it fixed it

But now o want to do the red powdercoat now

 

They’ll become hand tight again before you know it. Truth is you need gaskets unless they’ve recently been replaced. I did the 10mm bolt tightening for a couple years until my gasket couldn’t take it anymore. Also, the spark plug tube gaskets were real tired too. Not good for the engine.

 

Yeah, I have the ones from when i was going in to do it originally. Ill replace them once they start leaking agian

 

How hard is this job? My truck is a 05 DC. The dealer quoted me over $900 and when I said forget it they “reduced” it to $800. I still said never mind.

 

Check the bolts first, all but 2 of mine were finger tight. Should be torqued to 53 IN-LBS.

 

I think this is fairly common on our trucks

 

Thanks for advice. I will check. I would be willing to bet money that my Steelership was ripping me off and all that is needed is a little tightening.

 

If you do end up having to do them it's not hard at all.

 

Its not hard at all and likely need it. Just replace them and dont worry about it for another 15 years.

 

So what's the correct toque spec, 20 in-lbs or 53 in-lbs?
