I just towed my trailer to Glacier Park then to Minnesota and back from Eastern Washington, close to 2500k in total towing miles' averaged just over 9 mpg at around 65 mph, the trailer is about 4200 had a bunch of other stuff too, not really sure what the total weight was. when the empty light comes on my 2019 still has 7 gallons left in the 38 gallon tank.

 

Weight doesnt seem to be the issue so much as the extremely low drag coefficient of towing a giant brick behind the truck. Also climbing elevation 5000ft to 8000ft in summer temperatures really dogs the motor down. I literally used a quarter tank of gas climbing up out of Camp Verde to Cordes Junction which is only 26 miles. I had the gas pedal mashed to the floor completely to maintain 60. Next time I'll back it off to 45 and throw on the hazard lights.

I had a 2004 Ram diesel before I bought the Tundra. I miss the sound, the torque and the smells, but I like the reliability of the Tundra more. (The Ram had some issues that would have set me back too much)

 

I had the 2004.5 with the Cummins 600.

 

That type of mileage while towing is normal for a tundra

 

I wish you guys would post what motor you have. 4.6 or 5.7.

I’m buying a Tundra, likely a 4.6. Here’s a pic of my 4Runner that gets 15MPG. I made it from Salinas Ut down to Vegas on one tank. 17.5MPG.

 

I have the 5.7 in my 2015 Tundra. It has plenty of power and gets decent mpg. I bought the truck knowing it wasn’t going to get great gas mileage. Personally I would rather have the 5.7 engine and have the power I need, than to have the 4.6, probably better mpg, but may be lacking in power, maybe not now, but for future needs.

 

my original Tundra was a gen 2, 2007 SR5 with a 4.6 it was a great truck there was times i wanted more power so i then went with a 2010 SR 5 with the 5.7, not quite as good of gas milage but i have never regretted the change to the bigger motor now have a 19 limited and love it

 

I got a small V8 for towing once from another brand but I hated it. IT would get the same MPG towing or less towing the same load as the bigger motor and I took a wash getting the same truck but with the bigger motor. Ever since than I always got the biggest motor they offered for towing. This was almost 10 years ago now but I still let people know to avoid the same mistakes I did. EDIT: There was a leased 2500 in between that was more than I ever needed but still its the same point.

 

Towed my Starcraft Satellite this past weekend for the first time with my Tundra ( 2015 SR5 5.7L ). Camper weighs in at 4000lb pounds loaded. According to the truck I was getting 15.6MPG. Calculated it out at 14.4mpg. I do drive like a granny though. Usually dont exceed 60mph on the highways and most of my driving this weekend was 45-50mph of 2 lane roads. Did not even feel the camper behind me the whole time. Decided lastnight its time to upgrade to a bigger camper , lol.

 

What psi do you guys with TT’s run your tires at? My tires says 65 psi cold. I went to check it and found them at 40psi cold. Only had the trailer for 2-3 months.

 

Pulling a Coachmen Freedom Express 275BH from OK to AK (3,800~ miles) avg 8.1 fuely calculated. Trailer dry weight is 5700~lbs w/ approx 1500lb payload capacity. The military was paying me to move so I had the truck and trailer loaded to the max (prob even a little over). The pic is from one of our last days of the trip.

Driving around AK all summer I echo what others are saying and are between 8-9. IRT your fuel light, when not pulling and it comes on I plan for another 60 miles as a worse case scenario (6 gallons left in reserve). Towing I have pushed it to 200 miles but i was sweating bullets fortunately i was on familiar roads and knew where the gas station was.

 

If I remember correctly, I run my tires at 55 to 60 psi when towing.

 

Been pulling this particular setup for 2 years - total load when wet is right around 10K lbs...probably get blasted by the trailer police

But I've been pulling doubles for almost 20 years and this truck is by far my favorite to drive and pull with. Have no problem maintaining speed in the Mtn's (65) and get anywhere from 7 to 10 depending on wind, traffic and mtn passes.

 

Toyotas are "tanks"!! Just switched to a '13 loaded SR5 Sequoia but pulled a 26BH with our Tacoma no issues... Cruise about 62 MPH.

 

I was wondering about double-pulling, glad to see the Tundy can do it easily. Did you have to modify your TT for the rear hitch or was that on already?

I really want to pull a UTV/Motorcycle behind our Wolf Pup but not sure the Pup is capable.

 

Gotta be a pretty strong frame to double pull. Aren’t the wolf pups pretty lightweight?

 

Bad ass. Whats the length? Here in CA you cant tow doubles unless your first trailer is a 5th wheel/ gooseneck, and cant exceed 65ft in total length.

 

Where do you live ? And how did you ever find out this is legal in your state. I have wanted to do this here in indidna but everything I find says it must be a 5th wheel camper to do so.


To the O.P. I'm pulling a coachman apex 28' box dry weight of 5400#s. And i usually get between 8-10 mpg but that's also with a 6" lift and 35" tires.

 

Was this Tacoma V6 screaming when you hit the hills ? Lol

Pulled our 2014 Starcraft 287BH that weighs 5068 lbs empty and closed to 6500 or better loaded this past weekend for the first time with my new Tundra and averaged just over 9 mpg so I’d say your about right.

 

Total length is 65.75'. so technically I'm over my state allowed length of 65 feet. In Utah you can legally double pull behind any trailer. 5th wheel is not required.

I'm very careful on where I go because there is no backing this train up.

I have a prodigy breaker controller, WDH paired with airbags and E rated tires.

Best part is I've never had any problems with my truck (130k) and have used my truck to pull both my dad's Ford Diesel (3x) and my brothers Dodge Diesel (1x) to their dealerships.

So I don't care of I'm at the max of the Tundra because this is the biggest truck Toyota makes and I'll never not drive one.

At no point have I felt underpowered or pushed around and keep pace with those diesels who are also double pulling.

 

My 4 wheel camper weighs 1400 dry with 275/70/18 KO2s and am getting 14.1 through the Rockies. I carry a lot of gear with me. Love the pop up. Wish I could find a thread here for it.

 

I tow about 7000 lbs +- (depending on load - 6500 without water onboard, etc)...and use a Weight Distributing hitch (mine is old and relatively nonadjustable - the ball - )

on my 2000 5.3 Silverado - I would get 8 at best (there are some hills in PA, WV, VA, NY...etc) and it was a chore to tow...finding the right gear and staying there was .... not easy, with the 4spd transmission..

On my 2010 5.7 Tundra...Tow haul, 4th Gear (for the most part - did have to find D3 for a low speed hill climb to keep the RPM up...but anyway)...going 65 MPH, turning 3000 RPM for the most part...got 8.5-9.5 but was the easiest tow with the RV. Leave it in D4 (for the most part) with tow haul on...and go...plenty of power for the hills...didn't sway...great all around towing experience.

Love the Tundra for towing this weight

 

I think alot of us with big campers should look into the OV tune I'm trying to get more info on it now by going threw the thread. But it's a big one so. I'm just really curious of how much it cost right now have been reading alot of good things about it.
