This past July I purchased a slightly used 2018 platinum CM with 11k miles. I put about 2k on it and yesterday I noticed what I thought was a dent at the forward most portion of the passenger door. It was just above the AMP power step along the bottom of the door. I poked it and it turned out to be a 6”+ section of the paint separating from the bottom of the door.

I am the 2nd owner so It’s possible it’s not factory paint but I Don't think there was a repair of some sort.

I’m planning to take it to the local dealership sometime soon. This can’t be a common problem, is it?

Here in Hawaii we refer to that as “Korean body shop” AKA, Quickly done paint work over a bad repair.

Very strange. It will be interesting to see how they approach this, as paint work is no joke. This makes me think of a number of questions-

Why just the whites? The whites should be reflecting more UV and heat than the darker finishes...

Could the entire vehicle finish eventually peel off?

What is Toyota using as an electroplated medium between the body metal and the primer?

    Anybody?

I have 3 that are on my letter, my 19 only has 1k miles on it and I dont think I am interested in my local body shop tearing it down. Much like the leaky cam towers.

Maybe I’m overlooking, but when is this letter dated? I have an ‘18 Super White, and have not received one yet. I wonder if it is only for a certain batch of paint/production run, affecting a limited number of white Tundras...

I’ve seen this mentioned for both white and Blizzard Pearl. @jewsNbrews also brought it to my attention. We have a Blizzard Pearl Sequoia, but haven’t received the letter.

I am no paint specialist but it appears to me that there may be a sticker or some sort of laminate applied to the bottom section of he door under the paint and that is separating. I can stick my fingers behind the paint and it’s sticky. I assume it’s the orange peel/textured layer along the bottom to possibly prevent chipping form road debris. I hope to get to a dealership today and get a quick resolution. It’s grown quite a bit overnight. FBF0AB9C-6EAA-4092-9BCB-56523FE1D770.jpg38129842-EADF-48B3-9C0D-8AFA1A89DC20.jpg

2017 here and no letter as of yet. Anyone know if this is for certain years or VIN#'s? I guess I can login in and check my VIN online.....will do that right now.

Edit: Nothing showing on the Toyota Owner's site, but maybe that's only for Safety Recalls.

I'm gonna say that the paint comes out of the spray gun too slow and won't adhere to the body.

Ok. Sounds like the paint dried before hitting the surface..... because it's tooooooo slow....

I can't answer this with out the word "slow"

    I'll be in my corner:boink:

That is really bad, and wow is that rock guard paint thick! I would assume that is gonna be a full repaint. I wouldn't wanna accept any partial/blended repairs, who knows where else it will peel and how good the color match will be. I would ask for an extended paint warranty too. Toyota looks to have a problem on their hands.

That lower portion is the rock guard film that's applied and probably why its holding together like a sticker. Wonder if the whole truck could eventually do this.

Its because white is so fast it just peels the paint off, nothing to see here guys. You mgm/black owners shouldn't have to worry about it since you cant go fast enough to ever have this issue.......:anonymous::anonymous:
