can someone explain to me why the 2014+ is considered a 3rd gen when the 2007-present tundra is still a 2nd gen technically.

i know the 2014 was a refresh but its still a 2nd gen.

same issue they have over in the 4runner ( ) forum where they consider the 2019 a 6th gen and the 5th gen stop at 2017.

edit: what are you going to call the sub thread when the actual 3rd gen tundra comes out?

This has been asked about and discussed before. 2014 changes were more cosmetic, engine / chassis unchanged. I want to say that Toyota is calling them 2.5, or has been said on here before. Body parts and some interior like radio are not interchangeable with 07-13, enough so most just refer to as 3rd gen.

Though it was more of a refresh rather than a new generation, I think the reason for it lies in the incompatibility of some parts. You can't swap the taillights, for example.

Same reason they have 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th generation glocks. Did they change the insides with each generation or was it mostly minor cosmetic changes?

We call them 3rd gen Tundras because it looks nothing like the 2nd gen and makes it easier to differentiate in conversation. Also like others said, many parts aren’t interchangeable.

Not sure why people get their panties in a bunch over this. When the new ones come out we will call them 4th gen Tundras.

Glocks are a bad comparison. Many of the internals are incompatible between generations

One could say the same between 07-13 and 14+ tundras.

Yep, Toyota is still making 2nd generation Tundra trucks, but the 3rd generation trucks are expected to be ready for prime time in 2021.

well if thats the case might as well call the 2019/2020 4th gen since they added a bunch of stuff the 2014 doesnt have. why is this change of gen designation any different than any of the other toyota models? we still call the 2014 4runner 5th gen (since its completely different than the 2009 version), the 2020 tacoma 4th gen even though they changed alot from the 2016 version.

this so called 3rd gen still has the same major internals as the "2nd gen" series. so i am guessing we will be changing the what we call a new gen based on minor changes that every model gets thru the years that dont fit the older models?

oh well carry on i guess :)

I’m just curious OP what constitutes a “gen” change to you? I have never been one to care what gen something is myself, vehicles are more of an evolution to me they change something every year.
I can see this point from both sides, maybe drivetrain is what should be the kicker?

I don’t know about the OP, but I think a change in drivetrain makes a logical break point between generations.

well i know toyota changes minor things every year on a model to keep it fresh and different from the last model year, otherwise 80-90% of the population wouldnt look at a new tundra (and the average toyota consumer dont care squat about us minorities that know more about the vehicles via forums like this, we probably only constitute about 10% of the toyota buying power of a model).

the big parts that change/dont change is what underlies the gen model. i mean for the tundra, its the engine, frame, transmission and other major parts that dont change during the whole gen life cycle.

heck the tundra has gone thru what 2 refreshes on cosmetics alone. the interior has changed numerous times, exterior bits and pieces has changed several times also.

this happens all the time across all the toyota models during a gen cycle.

but hey if the forum wants to call it a 3rd gen go ahead but its still a XK50 designator.

edit: i guess if we want to stretch it, we could call this a 3rd gen since the T100 was the father of the tundra.

    T100 = XK10/XK20
    TUNDRA 1G = XK30/X40
    TUNDRA 2G = XK50

In 2014, Toyota introduced the new generation of Tundra at the Chicago Auto Show. They did change much of the body design (yes, mostly styling changes- but some functional changes, like tailgate spoiler, larger grill) and the interior was redesigned.

To me, both the facts that Toyota formally introduced it as a new gen, and the fact that you can easily differentiate the 13- from the 14+ by their appearance qualify it to be designated a new generation. Still a Tundra, but a different truck in appearance.

This reminds me of the other site I frequent that is aimed at vintage VW’s; the bugs, busses, ghias, etc... were never broken up into “generations”, and only after production ceased and the cars became enthusiast collectibles did the enthusiasts themselves break the vehicles up by manufacture date... 1938-1953, 54-57, 58-67, 1968+

We could do that here.. it would just be a bigger pain in the ass to discuss them, and I don’t know what is perceived to be benefited by abolishing the “generation 3” moniker.
