Buy some dog ear wash/cleaner, put on a cottonball and clean out the ears. We have the same issue with a German Shorthair pointer.

You can order pet meds for super cheap thru chewy.com, if you can figure out what med and the dosage, you could have them express ship it...

Dont use apple cider vinegar please

Use what you would use on a dog, not a salad
    Vet is suggested ASAP

If you dont have the money for the vet then PM me the vet and I got it.

    PMed you my phone number

The best thing to use to clean is a 50:50 mixture of water and plain white vinegar. DO NOT use apple cider vinegar. Place some in the ear, massage the base, then use a cotton ball or swab to clean the residue. Do it once a day until you can see your vet.

Okay, great. Just realize that not all OTC treatments work on yeast, which is a common cause of ear infections. Water/vinegar does, so if you don't see improvement in head shaking by Saturday, I'd recommend switching.

My German has shown signs of food allergies and was scratching at his ears. I took him into a local vet right away. Seems to be doing really good in a couple days.

    Good luck.

He needs to see the Vet. What you have described is probably a yeast infection which is common among German shepherds big ol ears. Warm water on a wash cloth may help a little but the Vet will need to give some antibiotics or a steroid cream.

Same thing happened to my girl when she was 3yrs old. My girls has some damm Satellite dishes for ears......

We had him on the Rachel Ray dog food forever and he's been fine. We just recently changed to blue wilderness and he's gotten a hot spot or allergy on his shoulder that clears up with antibiotics and now this ear infection.

I'm going back to the Rachel Ray food to eliminate any food allergies

The vast majority of itching dogs do not suffer from food allergies, contrary to everything the internet tells you. Only 5-15% of dogs with itching and skin problems have a true food allergy. Most of them have Atopic Dermatitis, which is a fancy way of saying they are allergic to something in the environment. Simply switching from one brand of food to another does not prove food allergy.

@Jerry311SD, Is the Rachel Ray grain free? My English Lab/Aussie has food allergies and we put her on grain free (Zignature) Itching and scratching all but gone.

I strongly recommend to my clients that they stop feeding grain free diets. There is absolutely no scientific basis for feeding a dog a grain free diet. In fact, cardiologists have seen a HUGE spike in cardiac disease that correlates with the grain free revolution, which has prompted the FDA to initiate current ongoing studies.
Dogs have allergies to the protein in diets, not the grains. Grain free is a product of people wanting to feed their dogs based on human diets. The nutritional requirements of the two aren't even remotely related. Please have a discussion with your vet about diets. They are the experts, not the salespeople in PetSmart. Okay, I'll step down from my soapbox.

Don't clean it. Pick up Zymox at a local pet store and use that. Works best when there's material in the ear that it can soak into. It's as good as most treatments a vet will prescribe. We've used it on our Lab with a lot of success and floppy eared dogs are very prone to ear infection.

@Kerch71, I got a question, I had blood work allergy test for my dog and the results came back her being allergic to beef, egg, soy, wheat, and peanuts. So just wondering what a good alternative would be. My vet said they really don't know what's causing DCM, but to take her off of grain free if just till they reach a answer. I did and put her on a grain food, she started back up itching bad again. She's regularly seen by our vet with no other issues. Not trying to take up your time, but your professional opinion and suggestions would help. Thanks for your time

I may need to have a private discussion with you then, but will keep it on the open forum for now. I feel like I’m going down a rabbit hole with my German Shepherd.

He has always, since a puppy been itchy and scratched at his ears and nibbles at his paws and coat.

4 years later, I have him due to needing a new home. He has lived in several areas of CO that are at least 50 miles apart.

I guess he is allergic to chicken based food, and his itching gets pretty bad when feeding him these diets. Never tried it myself yet.

The new vet wants to try these really expensive diets (100.00 per 23 lb bag) from Petsmart. The prior owner has tried some of these diets with some luck, but not enough to make the switch. I have always used Nutro and my last two dogs were large breed Shepherds that lived to 14-16 years old, fed them home made diets at times.

Right now we have him on some anti-itching meds for two weeks and seen some improvement.

I don’t think he has food allergies at all. Let me find the paperwork of all the stuff the vet wants to do.

Our Lab had issues with chicken based foods as well. Seems more common than you would think. We tried a lot of different foods and Orijen Regional Red has worked the best. Pricey though. Hang tough, these types of issues can take a while and a lot of trial and error to figure out.

EVERYTHING @Kerch71 said I agree with! True food allergies are few and far between and contrary to popular belief it is the protein in the diet not the grains they are allergic to. Again, I also don't recommend grain free diets due to the FDA linking cardiac disease to grain free diet, I never recommended them before and certainly don't now. Water and white vinegar 50:50 solution and I would clean 1-2 times daily, fill up the ear canals, massage at the base of the ears and wipe clean. No qtips needed. He will likely need a medicated ear medication that will treat: bacteria, yeast and has a steroid in it. Jared Miller, DVM.

A little more info.......When we do see food allergies its usually younger dogs 2 years and younger however it can happen in older dogs. Atopy(atopic dermatitis) is usually the culprit which can be treated with prednisone(side effects and possibly long term affects but stupid cheap and works), apoquel and cytopoint. The last two are the safer options but also the more expensive options. Secondary skin infections whether bacteria and/or yeast have to be addressed also. Atopy is not a disease that can be cured but only managed so expect continuous treatment. We are not saying NO dog is allergic to grain just the majority aren't.
