Today I was coming home towing my trailer. Had cruise control on at 70 mph. A few times the truck when accelerating cruise control rpms went up tp 4000 but mph dropped to 60. Most of the time it holds rpm's between 2100 and 3100. Sometimes it would just turn of cruise. Sometimes it would reset and pick back up to 70. No idiot lights came on motor never sounded like it was having issues and transmission seems fine. Has anybody else had this happen. It has only happened when towing.

You are not supposed to tow and use cruise control. It is in your owners manual under towing.

As powerful as the tundra is, once the set speed deviates by 5-6 mph, cruise control is disabled.

One of my posts long ago, I posted the page number in the manual.

Only trucks I have seen get away with towing and using CC are diesels. I literally have to use CC or I will be 20 mph over the speed limit.

I have had that happen when towing also. I typically don't use cc when towing, as I prefer to have more control when towing. I will occasionally use it on a flat to be able to move my right leg around for a couple minutes.

If you are towing light, probably under 3500 lbs, CC should work fine.

    8-8500 lbs, not so much.

I've had CC turn off 2-3 times over past month for no apparent reason. Not towing but road has rolling hills and may have gained over 5-6 mph. I'll pay more attention now to speed when it shuts down. I have noticed it will down shift if it picks up speed above what I've set it at. I suppose I could also just be bumping the controls.

I can't tell by your profile picture, but it looks like you have aftermarket wheels and possibly larger tires. (Extra weight, once it gets going....)

Try this when going down the hills, in drive, push the tow haul button and the truck should downshift for you (grade braking) and it may be less of an annoyance to you.

I would do that a lot on CO due to where I live (lots of steep grades) and this would take care of the issue.

OK read my owners manual today about towing with cruise control. Not recommended but I figured out why my cc deactivated . I never lost speed but it was very windy. when VSC activates it will turn off cc. Either way I found out not a good thing to do. So I will try not to use cc anymore while towing . Again I want to thank You for info and advice. I have a 2006 2500 Ram Cummings never had issues. Towing with these electronic controls on new trucks it quite different. Old dog learning now tricks

Glad you read up on this. Most people do not read their owners manual. I'm just as bad, I have only skimmed through my current truck OM.

Your 06 CR Cummins is electronic as well, but with as much power/torque it has, not really having any traction control (thankfully). My 05 CTD would pull Vail Pass at whatever speed I wanted with no issues in overdrive, CC on.

Yeah it has no traction control and use it when i do long tows. Problem is when i go to the beach or deer lease ram is just to big to take. Gets stuck in sand due to weight and just to big to drive out at deer lease. Tundra fills that spot perfectly just have to learn how to use it right

You must have a long box dodge.

The Dodge with the Cummins turbo diesel is way heavy up front.

Thanks for the info TJ. You're right in that I have aftermarket wheels but the tires are the Michelin's that came with the truck on the 18" steel wheels. Aftermarket wheels have been on over a year now and the intermittent shutting down of the CC started within past 30 days. No tow haul button on mine but I do drop the shift from D to 2 so I can get some manual control over downshifting on hills. Nothing like CO here in NJ but there are some grades that I prefer to do this on. Shifting to 2 in itself will not affect the cruise control setting, if I am using it, which in general I'm not if I feel the need to downshift. Bottom line, I may be the problem by my hands bumping the CC lever when engaged. I'm now paying more attention to see what happens.
