Thanks. From what I've heard, I believe the 2020s will have adaptive cruise. Still waiting for GM to update their Canadian websites to confirm that, though.

As to your issues with your 2018, that would be my primary concern with buying a GM. A Sierra would have better fuel economy and higher towing and payload capacities but the Tundra should be more reliable and about $10k cheaper, which will buy a lot of fuel.

 

What tech features does GM lack? Toyota is, and has always been the last to adopt the latest tech. Which is part of the reason their reliability is higher than the big three, if the tech aint there it cant break! lol.

GM truck interiors rub me the wrong way from a looks perspective, but their tech is WAY better than a Tundra... christ, Toyota FINALLY added push button start this year.

 

Up until a few months ago with the all new 2019s, GM didn't have Push button start either, they didn't have blind side monitors which even my 2017 Tundra had blind side monitors.
I would say in comparison with GM, Tundra has been a small step ahead at least in safety features maybe not things like apple car play, but in comparison to Ford and maybe RAM in some cases, both GM and Toyota have been a ways behind them. Although RAM didn't have blind side monitoring until their new 2019s came out.

 

I actually prefer the old school key that you turn to start and I couldn't care less about safety features, especially if the truck is going to brake itself for no reason, as was reported on some of the 2018 Tundras.

 

Father in law had a 17 Sierra, had Lane keep assist, collision alert, auto brake, wifi hotspot, wireless charging, led headlights.. have to ask him if it had blind spot. My point is Toyota will never be cutting edge when it comes to technology, they squeeze every dollar out of platform, adding features sparingly until the last year of the model when it usually is comparable to other automakers.

 

See I have had push button start in many vehicles for many years now. When you don't have it, it can be bit annoying when your use to vehicles having it.
ironically the first vehicle I had with push button start was a Toyota, it was a Land Cruiser 200 which has had that feature since 2008 I know maybe longer. So for me push button start and things like blind side monitors, is way more important than things like apple car play. I have a I-phone X+ and still seldom ever use apple car play on the vehicles that I owned that has had that feature. Smart Cruise and push start are really nice once you have had them and gotten use to using them.

 

I agree, having had push button start and blind spot on the last 7 vehicles we have owned going back to key really sucked.
I dont get the " I prefer a key" crowd, push button fobs have a key inside to get into the door of the battery dies.. and even with a dead battery the fob will still start the car. Keys and Keyless share one thing, if you lose either you aint going anywhere.

 

It didn't have blind side monitoring neither of the GM twins had that feature until the 2019s. True on the Wifi, but that is a pay service and most everyone has a wifi hotspot they are already paying for included with their phone service. I never activated mine.
My 18 Silverado was the top of the line LTZ with every option they offered in 2018, the only trim slightly higher then the LTZ would have been the high country model which only gave it the western seats like the 1794 does in the Tundra line.
Lane Keep was an interesting tech feature.

I do agree Toyota has been mostly behind the curve in terms of tech offered in the Tundra's.
But I also try to give some credit to Toyota for the tech they did offer that others didn't.
I am by no means a brand loyalist to any car brand.

I have today in my personal stable 2 Toyota's 1 Chevy, and a Ram. A month ago that would have been 2 Chevys 1 Ram and 1 Toyota.
The 50 vehicles give or take I have in my business fleet consist of about 8 different brands.
We have some of all brands of pickups sold in the US at the moment in the fleet.
They all have their quirks. (Pros and Cons)

 

Now that you guys mention it, I have had times where keyless entry would have been useful (hands were full or too cold to take my mitts off and dig in my pocket for a key or something like that). But I like the way it's done on my parents' 2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara where you still turn the ignition, just like you would with a keyed ignition except there's no key in it.

 

Sorry if this was already asked but does the 2020 Tundra have a power locking tailgate?

 

Mine does have power locking tailgate, but I’m not positive that it is standard.

It does not have push button start. SR5. Wondering what trim you have to go to to get it. I’m indifferent on it. A key has worked for me for my 30+ years driving.

 

You sure you have a 2020? I thought all 2020 Tundras had push button start now?

 

100% positive. Per the vin number. All documentation. Insurance cards etc.

Even has the bigger touch screen and Apple CarPlay

This was a Gulf States Toyota TSS. Makes me wonder if it not having push to start isn’t something to do with them as a distributor? I bought it immediately after it was unloaded from the semi. First 2020 the large dealer had sold.

Have added window tinting since picture and Katskinz leather.

 

Nice looking truck! Maybe it is a distributor thing. Not a big deal having to use an old fashion key though.

Mine does, that said I believe it was listed as one of the gulf states installed options.
Meaning the regional distributor installed it and added it to the window sticker prior to sending it out to the dealer. Not actually a factory installed option, even though it shows. It on the window sticker.

 

That list there I believe is correct.

Not all 2020s have the push button start feature.
I know there is some media confusion on that fact. I have watched a few 2020 video reviews where they state incorrectly that all 2020s have push button start.

When I started watching the 2020s hit dealers most all that were landing first were SR5s and all clearly still had keyed ignitions .

 

I believe the TSS is a gulf states pkg added by the distributor to a factory built SR5 pkg truck.
Push start is defiantly a factory built option, tied to specific trim levels.
As I learned the hard way it effected more then just how it starts , it also alters the TPMS sensors that are used.

Locking tailgate is still a dealer or distributor installed option. My 2020 Platinum did not have the tailgate lock so I had the dealer add it as part of the deal.

 

2020 TPMS with smart Key Update number 2:
OEM sensors are back on the truck now in the custom wheels. The self learn feature worked just fine. Put it in learn mode and it picked up the original TPMS sensors and stored them. No real need to even have a TPMS tool to program a 2018-2020 assuming you have the correct sensors in it. LOL

Learned another thing about the 2020 with smart key TPMS sensors. In order to read them I had tell my TPMS tool that I was scanning sensors for 2019 Land Cruiser. When trying to scan them for a 2019 Tundra got nothing. Sense the 200 Land Cruiser has always had the smart key system it only made sense to give it try, and sure enough it read the 2020 smart key optioned Tundra sensors. I am not sure if I could have complete the programing since I was telling the TPMS tool that I was working on a 2019 Land Cruiser. I decided to give the self learning system a try and it worked so I called it good at that point.

 

Your truck looks great. When I saw your first comment on the sensor issues I was going to ask why you didn't use the OEM sensors on the custom wheels in the first place? I'm getting a 2020 white platinum this weekend and I was hoping to be able to use the OEM sensors on the new wheels I ordered.

Unrelated question, but did you black out your mirror covers or did it just look that way to me in your pictures? I'm trying to decide if I want to go color matched or black. And I also need to see what's possible with the new smart door handles. I don't like how part is painted and part is chrome.

 

Well sh%t...I already bought 2019 Tundra OEM TMPS and installed them in my Wheels that are sitting at the dealer waiting for my 2020 PRO to arrive.

 

I am almost positive the 2020 TRD pro has push button start. I think your going to have to rob the sensors out of the OEM wheels or track down the 2020 part number.
I suspect the part number is going to be the same as the ones in a 2018-2019 Land Cruiser.

What I find really irritating is that I gave the Toyota dealer's parts guy my 2020 VIN number and he said it took the same sensors as the 2019s. This was prior to agreeing to pay the service department 50 bucks to fix it or tell me what the issues was.
It was the Toyota shop foreman that found the issue and discovered the parts department was not correct, that my truck in fact could not use the 2019 Tundra sensors, since it had the push button start( Smart Key) They still charged me the $50 bucks, even though it was the parts department is the one that screwed up.

The OEM sensors are silver and my new wheels are black, since I had to go back and put the OEM silver stems back in, I managed to run down some black covers on Ebay last night. I had also used some black stems that I purchased from tire rack and robbed the outer covers from for my Land Cruiser since only stems available for it were also silver. I hope to have the silver stem deal resolved one way or another later this week or early next week.

I would say yes, you can most likely use those OEM sensors in your new wheels, and that would likely be your best bet right now, till the aftermarket world gets brought up to date on what is what with these new 2020 TPMS system on the Tundra.

No my mirrors are Chrome capped.
I don't mind a little chrome here and there on a white truck.
I actually like my new door handles a lot. The solid chrome covers that came on my 2017 platinum always felt like cheap plastic. These new handles have the sensors in them so changing might be a trick, but I will say I like mine, I think they feel like a good quality handle this time and I like the look of the chrome and body color combined.

Could you post link to eBay black valve stem covers...same issue black wheels silver and valve stem.
I ran into this on my car and I had the stem powder-coated but if I can buy them already black that would be better.

Thanks for the additional info. I didn't even think about the stems - I have black wheels I'll be putting on too. That's good to hear about the door handles, maybe I'll just leave them alone.

Lacking the 360 camera is what bugs me on the new Tundras. I'm about to trade my M3 in on one and that'll be what I miss the most. I'm also not happy about the cement color not being an option for the platinum trim. And I'm a fan of smart key tech and push button start. Not having to get my key fob out of my pocket has been a nice feature since I finally upgraded from a 99 model...lol
