Power steering whining

Anybody else have a whining power steering pump?

 

Check power steering fluid level, they whine when fluid is low. Neighbor’s highlander had the same whine, gone when fluid is topped up! Good luck!

 

Mine does. Full of fluid or not.
*edit, mine is a 2008 with 5.7

 

My 2014 DC 5.7L, fluid was topped off but was dark, did a quick flush with about a gallon of fuild and the whine went away.

I didn't notice mine until I was swapping headunits and was without my music. I would hear the whine when accelerating and when it settled it would stop. After searching online I found some posts about low fluid levels and dirty fluid can cause this. I filled it up and still heard the whine then flushed the fuild and whine was gone. I had thought it was because of my afe intake.

 

Look at the nasty gunk coming out of my system! Glad I’m flushing it before winter.


*edit* I didn’t see any of this gunk until I starting the truck with a disconnected power steering hose and it all shot out. I’ll do this again once I drive a while and flush again.

That’s great point! I was thinking how water could get into the closed loop, then came to the conclusion it was air. Never thought of that though, I bet your right.

 

Anyone know the lowest point of the steering loop to drain the most fluid?

 

I was just going to ask you which hose you disconnected. I’m used to the old school reservoir mounted to the pump. It was always obvious which one was the high-pressure and return line. Without staring at it from under the truck and having to remove my skid plate, they all look like low pressure lines coming from the reservoir. What I’ve been doing is just sucking the fluid out of the reservoir with a automotive turkey baster. Then just refilling with my fluid of choice. I have been doing this with royal purple. Funny thing, it makes it look like the oil is really dirty because it’s purple now. Thinking of switching that up to something else.

 

I drained from both these hoses.

So much crap under there haha so many damn lines it’s hard to get a feel what’s doing what. Hoses going everywhere from the reservoir, to the cooler, to the rack LOL

 

I should say I drain the passenger side then realized the should have done the drivers one in the first place as it’s lower.

 

So you just disconnect one of the hoses and let it drain, or do you disconnect and turn the truck on while turning the truck lock to lock?

 

This time I jacked the front wheels off the ground and turned the wheels lock to lock with the engine off. Got an extra half a quart of oil out I’d estimate.
