Spill and fill trans fluid change

i am curious to know because I read Toyota’s maintenance and it says do. Or flush trans. But dealers say flush it? What’s the right thing to do for my 2016 tundra. Any Toyota techs

I’ve done both my 06 tundra and 08 sequoia without issues

 

I replaced the filter on mine. I just can't imagine leaving a filter in there forever.
I did start the truck for only 5 seconds at the same time so I could push the fluid out of the cooler.

 

I do a drain and fill annually.

 

I’m at 29xxx and I asked my dealer to do drain and fill. He didn’t want to do it. Told me to wait till 60 if I’m towing. Said he didn’t want to take my money. I figured even if it’s harmless and he’s not the one physically doing it, why wouldn’t he just want the sale. I kind of took it as a sign that, either he’s looking out for me or I really don’t want them touching my truck.

Integrity is rare in automotive service anymore, but you find it. I met an OEM service mananger like that once, but these days you never see the manager. Service writers knowing less than you are writing up your service order.

Edit: @Mikejr Don't know your mechanical skills, but I would say Toyota recommended drain and fill is a safe choice for anyone needing to ask the question. Absolutely do not do the dealer flush...you'll get contamination from other people's transmissions, and some are hoping for a miracle before failure.

Everyone thinks the process to get the correct fill level is difficult but it really isn’t.

 

I have. But it makes me nervous. I’ve changed out transmissions on my own in the past. But they were turbo 350s LOL easy Peezy. I feel like I’m doing this blind on a tundra. I don’t have a techstream. Do have bullydog bdx. Just really don’t want to mess shit up. I do have a 100k 10 platinum warranty. I also need to change the timing belt on my Sequoia. I have all the parts. I’ve done the research, and I’m confident I can do it. But I’m gun shy because there’s a possibility I fuck it up! Then the car is basically a brick. I’m one of the types that likes to have either a very comprehensive write up or instructions, or someone with him the first time he does it to be shown how it’s done, once.

 

I've started doing the drain and fill. Probably do it every, or every other, oil change. Old fluid smelled fine, but having 220k with a supercharger and towing regularly I think it's a good idea.

 

Wonder how @ARamirez73 would do his, if he EVER gets it done!

Anybody point me in the direction of a very comprehensive DIY simple spill and fill write up? I’ve always been wary of just measuring what I take out. All it takes is one spill and you F it up LOL. Plus it seems some of the fluid stays behind in the container. Waiting for a specific temperature to check the fluid level also sounds sketchy. I’m sure once I seen it done it may simplify it for me. At the moment it sounds like witchcraft

I guess just being proactive. It seems a lot of people around here do a spill and fill quite often. Some do it every oil change and some do it annually. I just want my transmission to last. I have a friend who religiously has his transmission fluid changed every two years. This is on a dodge Dakota that has over 200 K with the transmission still going strong. I figured since my truck is pretty low mileage that I would do it every five years or 30 K. It’s probably a waste. But I do Offroad and use 4 x 4, also tow occasionally. And I am known to put my foot down now and again.

but I can understand your friend doing it every two years it’s a dodge lol
My foot gets pretty heavy too sometimes and I do tow every summer, but my transmission hasn’t been acting strange so I’m ok with every 100,000km (60k miles) and I do ask them to check the level of the transmission oil every time I go in for oil change.

Yeah I was surprised too. Especially since his Dodge transmission lasted 200 K with zero issues. I think he was basically changing the fluid every 20 to 30 K doing it every two years. And he towed quite a bit with it.

I have a drain and fill done every so often. Drop the pan and clean out the strainer; waiting for the proper temperature to properly verify fluid level can be a real test of patience in warmer months.

 

If you want to only drain and fill, youTube video below is excruciatingly long and detailed, but a good demonstration of how to check fluid level, and then how to correct the fluid level if necessary. Subject truck is 2014 5.7L 4WD. It agrees pretty closely with the SRM.
