You can always find 100 different takes on what works and what doesn't. The real factor is finding what works for your body and mind.
Nothing is absolutely going to be right for everyone. But, facts of science say enough for me to do SOMETHING to give my body a chance. The only thing I don't agree with is anything that is a shortcut. This includes surgery for fat-loss. I'm not saying it's wrong, it's just a shortcut, that doesn't address the core problem... Which is always what's in your mind. You have to believe in yourself to make a change, and to adapt a lifestyle. This is where the process starts. You have to commit to what you want with full passion and belief. When you make yourself comfortable in any situation by taking a shortcut you will always find that it will catch up with you, and usually not the way you want it to.

I say train your body in a manner that fits your lifestyle and something that is ultimately sustainable in the chaos called life. The body is the most efficient machine when trained to be such. If you train it to eat, it will eat and eat and eat. If you train your body to eat one meal a day and run a marathon, it will do just that. You can do anything with your body if you want. Get fat, get skinny, get ripped, get HUGE, get tan, get a f@cking clue. Know yourself.

Its called net carbs. You subtract fiber from total carbs.

The trick is nutritional labels often lie about stuff. So if its processed food you cannot believe the dang label. Loopholes exist so they dont have to list the gram quantity of “less than 2% ingredients”

Regardless of diet, eat real food only

For the most part I've been doing 16/8 since November. For the diet it was just portion control. I had dropped 25lbs by May and have kept it off. I'd like to drop another 5 since that was my initial goal, then reassess at that point. I'll likely start hitting the weights almost exclusively, with a couple cardio sessions a week. Currently I have one good weights session a week, one kettlebell program session and a 2-3 mile run. Sometimes I do a crossfit style METCON. I do yoga in the morning almost every day. I have no schedule or program. I just do whatever I feel like doing because I'm far more consistent that way.

I will say, the IF keeps me feeling light in the evenings and I have more energy for working out or just whatever I need to do.

I will not be able to do the fasting. I actually do the opposite - I eat about six meals per day. Small portions. Low carbs and low sugar. I have lost 18 pounds the last 6 months by just cutting back on the carbs and sugar; not cutting it completely out, just cutting back.

I did it for 8 months or so with ridiculous results. I worked 7 days a week from about 9am-1am doing physical labor. I ate between 5-10pm- usually just one gigantic meal and the occasional second meal late at night. Before I started fasting I would hit a brick wall once a week or so and not be able to work anymore, end up sleeping in and getting behind schedule. During the time I was fasting I seriously felt superhuman. Endless energy, got pretty ripped and felt way stronger (just from work- no gym) slept great every night and felt rested from the little hours I did get, crazy mental clarity- super motivated and focused, boosted confidence and more communicative in general, just overall became a super efficient and productive person.

Now I work a lot less, eat a lot more often and am generally lethargic hahah. After posting/seeing this post I really feel motivated to get back into it

I’ve been laid up for a month with a back injury. First couple weeks I had to crawl to the bathroom. One of the things I have been doing to improve along with my PT(and two epidural injections) has been getting rid of excess fat. I’m 5’6” and fairly muscular but was a fat 204lbs. Living sedentary and combining intermittent fasting with keto I’m down to 186 in that month. I can’t imagine once how well it will work when I’m active again. I’m almost never hungry because of the keto I think....I just make sure I get some good leafy greens in with all the meat I’m eating. This has been easier then when I was just doing IIFYM back in the day(was also very successful) and I’m not even exercising.

I’m also thinking the keto is helping with the inflammation of my bulging and herniated discs, but I’m not sure.

I think the key to dieting is finding something that just works for you. How it fits with your lifestyle and how it makes you feel. That being said sugar is the fucking devil.

I lost 60 pounds doing 16/8 and counting calories. I don't credit the IF for the weight loss. I could have just controlled my calories. The IF was a tool to help me eat less. If you have to drop calories 20% and let's say that puts you at 2000 calories, only eating a couple of big meals equal to that 2000 calories made it a lot easier than 3 or more meals. Simple to do.

As far as IF, there's a ton of information out there. If you ate all the calories your body required per day in an 8 hour window, do you think you are starving yourself or your muscle will shrivel away? The answer is no. You are not starving yourself.

If you don't get the calories you need to maintain your current weight, are you starving yourself? The answer is yes. It's called a diet. Mild starvation. And there isn't anything wrong with that as long as you can re-adjust your calories for your new body weight at the end of your diet and not over eat.

You could IF and eat more calories than your body needs. Are you starving? No, you are getting fat.:hungry:

One unexpected benefit I found with IF was my heartburn went away. That's probably pretty appealing to all you dad bods out there chowing down on tums everyday. It gives your digestive system time to rest and repair.

One other thing, I lost that 60 pounds and I ate what I wanted to. Yes, ice cream. Its just calories folks. Im not diabetic, so I didn't have to worry about it. If I was, I'd probably look at the keto and IF.

I used to be so dogmatic when I was young, eating 6 to 8 meals (think body for life). Did it work? Yep. And it was inconvenient for me. I didn't have the time and it cost to much.

Do I think IF or calorie counting is the best way/only way? Absolutely not.

The moral of my rant: there is more than one way to skin a cat. If it doesn't feel right to you, there is no shortage of ways to lose weight. :humble:

I do 24-48 hr fasts once every couple months, my girlfriend and I just did fast mimicking for 5 days and the results were impressive. Tons of new studies coming out about stem cell regeneration with fasting.

Just do not obsess about calories. Calories are a scam measurement that has been twisted and doctored by big food corporations.

1000 calories of skittles vs 1000 calories of ribeye steak...which one do you think you should eat?

    Calories are not all equal

Hmm, sure for nutrition sake but as far as weight loss I’m a firm believer in calories in/calories out. When I did IIFYM I ate mostly junk food including ice cream EVERY DAY, lost 40lbs in 4 months while at the same time bringing my deadlift from 375 to 500, no supplements or drugs. I think IF is great to combine with something that keeps you in a caloric deficit if you’re trying to lose fat like IIFYM or keto etc.

Regular fasting is nuts! I get it for religious purposes every now and then, I used to do that years ago. Now, I eat about 3,000 kcal a day across five meals and I've never been healthier or leaner. The human body is a machine, it needs lots of the right types of fuel to perform its best.

Edit: to clarify, I'm not a gym rat either. I only work out 2-3 times a week for about an hour each.

Calorie in and calorie out is a myth. If it were true, the average person wouldnt be failing by counting calories.

I eat 2500-3000 calories a day and lose weight. I dont even want to lose weight...

It sounds like you had luck with it which is awesome. But it also sounds like you were working out very hard, which may have increase your gains.

Take 2 sedentary people. Put one on keto and one on a calorie restriction. The keto person will lose fat despite eating a shitload more calories

Protein, fat, and carbs perform different tasks. You gotta get protein pretty regularly throughout the day, especially before and after workouts, fats mostly before a long workout or before low intensity activity, slow-digesting carbs before an intense workout, and fast-digesting carbs after.

I've followed this approach for the past five years, with varying strictness, working out or not working out, and I'm never more than a couple months of disciplined adherence away from a six pack.

Edit: damn how could I forget the most important part. Beer, any time it sounds good!

Really good info. I don’t think this is for everyone. Some people will say no way I can’t go without eating that long. As for me, I’ve done calorie counting, Atkins, and intermittent fasting is what has worked best for me. Better sleep. Fat loss. Better focus on the job. No more afternoon coffee to keep going and better workouts in the gym.

I’m over 50 and do this regularly. I lift 6 times a week and also do cardio everyday. I certainly am not thin, but I can pretty much eat what I want as long as I stick to the routine. I stop eating before 9pm and don't eat a solid meal again until after I workout/cardio. Prob 2-3 in the afternoon. I do drink a protein in the am, as well as a pre and post workout. But it works for me, and man do I love good beer!

I have fasted one day a week for years. It's actually more than a day, but from dinner to breakfast two days later, about 37 hours. Doesn't really change much in weight, muscle mass, etc, but just makes me feel better, sleep better, especially on the day of the fast and the succeeding 2-3 days. I'm an old dude now (72), so not really into any physical training other than toning. Get plenty of exercise working my property anyway. Stretching is the most beneficial protocol for me.

I did it for couple months, 16/8. Felt good, lost some weight and had a lot of energy. However the thing I was missing was social interactions around food and family/friends dinners etc...I would stop around 4PM every day but then I would miss on eating with my kids/wife or going out with friends because I wouldn't eat.
I feel eating with people is also an important part of life. my 0.02.

I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for about 1 year. I started due to being diagnosed with the beginning symptoms of fatty liver. I lost about 30 pounds. I reached that plateau and in order to get over it I began working out. Fasting because a lifestyle, I don’t even realize I’m doing it now.

CICO is not a myth. CICO is a thermodynamic principle. It applies indirectly weight since the human body isn't a machine. Your body doesn't NEED to use every calorie ingested and can be expelled as waste. It doesn't make CICO wrong, just not 100% applicable to weight loss.

Every calorie is equal since that's a unit of measure, just like a gallon is a gallon whether it's gasoline or water. That doesn't mean that your body will use all of the nutrition in that calorie, since again the body isn't a 100% efficient machine.

Calorie counting is a legitimate diet (notice I didn't say CICO because that isn't a diet), it works and it can be maintained over a long term if necessary. The amount of calories one person needs it different compared to another and that takes time to figure out, it's not an overnight process. The problem why most people fail is they underestimate the amount of calories they consume because they don't properly measure their intake, and they overestimate what they burn. No you're not burning 1000 calories/hour on the elliptical sorry.

I dropped 75lbs over 2 years ago and have kept it off. I ate whatever the hell I wanted, I didn't cut out any food groups.

When the vet tells you to put your dog on a diet do you start keto, intermittent fasting, atkins....

Eat less, Eat better, Exercise more. You'll lose weight. Some of those diets can really damage your body.

Love this thread. I read a bunch of stuff from Fung and have been interested in fasting. My wife and I did a 24-ish hour fast together. It wasn't too bad. She's been intermittent fasting for the past few weeks and it's working for her. My biggest interest in fasting is Fung's take on autophagy. When I get to my goal weight, I'll have significant lose skin and he seems to believe that fasting can minimize or prevent lose skin with significant weight loss. I'll probably try some longer fasts in the future, but not sure I would go full intermittent fasting routine.

My weight is like a roller coaster the past 10 years or so. I got as high as 328 in 2015 and as low as 246 in 2016. I went back to 298 in 2018 and am back to 256 today. What works for me when I'm maintaining/losing is counting calories. Lost 29lbs since mid-June while eating an average of 2,600 calories per day; I keep protein around 170 (would like this to be a little higher) and fat around 100, the rest is carbs. We eat out a lot and I generally eat what I feel like eating. I have days that I eat 2,000 calories and days that I eat 3,000-4,000; just try to make the 3,000 and 4,000 calorie days few and far between.

My food choices always seem to follow my activity levels though; more activity = better food choices. We hired a trainer in April and I work with him 5 days a week, play basketball a couple times a week, and increased non-exercise activity (walking mostly).

When I'm leaning or cutting, I usually do IF for about a month or two, depending on how my body reacts, and how quickly it adjusts to the change. Once it adjusts to change, I'll switch to maybe low carb for another month or so. Then after that, back to a regular normal eating. Rinse and repeat.
If your end goal is fat loss, being successful is mainly determined by diet. That's my advice I tell everyone that asks me. Diet, diet, diet. You can workout 8 hours a day, but if you eat unhealthy food like McDonald's burgers, fries, and shakes every day, then you won't see any progress.

I have been doing intermittent fasting for a couple years now, but not consistently, I tend to cheat on the weekends. I work at a computer so I drink lots of water so I wear the carpet out to the bathroom. I don't eat anything until 10am, then hit the gym at work, cardio 10min then lift 50min, eat decent lunch after then a decent dinner before 6. I am 6' 275lbs and built like a linebacker, but weight loss has eluded me all my life because I have 32 sweet teeth and when i curb my processed food intake my weight tends to go down. However, I have noticed when my stress levels go down and I quit thinking about food my weight drops. Now to figure out how to reduce stress levels.

I know Fasting and breatharianism are nowhere near the same thing, but if you are ever curious to learn about it, here are some references:

Definition: Breatharianism is the belief that it is possible for a person to live without consuming food, and in some cases water. Breatharians claim that food (and sometimes water) is not necessary for survival, and that humans can be sustained solely by prana, the vital life force in Hinduism. According to Ayurveda, sunlight is one of the main sources of prana, and some practitioners believe that it is possible for a person to survive on sunlight alone. The terms breatharianism or inedia may also refer to this philosophy when it is practiced as a lifestyle in place of a usual diet.

Breatharianism is considered a deadly pseudoscience by scientists and medical professionals, and several adherents of these practices have died from starvation or dehydration. It is an established fact that humans require food and water (nutrients) to survive.

The problem with counting calories is exactly the indirect application you bring up.

Calories are an arbitrary unit of measurement of food that does not apply to nutrition as we have been taught. Measuring the “energy” content of a food in a laboratory setting is one thing, how the body uses each is different.

100 calories of fat is not equal to 100 calories of protein or 100 calories of carbs.

Protein can build muscle tissue, carbs cannot for example. Eating some carbs won’t kill you, but there is no biological requirement for carbohydrate in the human body. The body can survive without carbs, but it cannot survive without fat or protein.

If one eats the proper foods, they don’t need to care about counting calories at all. The body will behave as it was designed to. Eating just fat and protein you can eat to satiety and lose body fat.

A great documentary to check out Fat: A documentary by Vinnie Tortorich. Rent it on Amazon then do your own research to validate

All I know is that for me to lose weight I need to go into a coma. I can gain weight with healthy eating of 1200-1500 calories per and working out 2x a day. I know cause I've measured and tracked. My body was built to store fat to survive a famine.
