    Hi All.
Hoping to get some info on here before hearing what the mechanic says about this.
I have ~180k miles on this truck, never had any major problems, very reliable.
Check engine light came on yesterday so I brought it to my local place that does my oil change which is not a dealership. Told me the two codes were P0418 and P2441 - secondary air injection system control and secondary air injection system switching valve stuck bank 1. Told me the truck was basically shot. I drove it over to the dealership nearby and left it there for them to take a look and see what they say. Won't have an answer most likely for a few days as it's Friday afternoon right now…What do you think?
    Any suggestions welcome.

This other shop said your truck is "shot"????

Lol your truck is far from shot.... it probably needs the tsb done. The air injection system can get water or moisture in it. The pump flows the air and moisture into the valves, then the truck sits and the moisture rusts the valve stuck. There are all updated parts to put in. Also have u had the recall reflash done for that problem? Have u been to the dealer in the last 2 or so years? They reflashed the ecu to make the pumps turn on everytime u shit the truck off. This clears the lines of moisture...

"Shit the truck off" heh heh. Hey Jace, Do I need the flash? My pumps do not turn on when I sh*t the engine off. I'm not having any issues, but I wasn't aware of a TSB for that.

Thanks for the input! I'm waiting to see what they tell me from the dealership, and I'm pretty sure that I haven't taken it to my local one in over two years. I read that other people have had a similar issue fixed under an extended warranty by toyota, supposedly the air injection system had a known issue within the 2nd gen tundras so they extended the warranty from 5 years 60k miles to 10 years 150k miles. Which of course I'm past the 150k mile mark so we'll see…also, what is "tsb"? I just got a recall notice about a wiring issue that can start a fire so I had planned on bringing it in anyway. Hoping for the best!

TSB- Technical Service Bulletin, I have an 08 and went through this very same problem @ 60k miles. They did the flash and it did not fix it. Had to bring it back, and that's when they said it was the air injection pump. Good luck with that, I hope they can cover it for you, because it's a costly fix.

If it's not covered under warranty and the repair cost is high, do a search for the air injection pump bypass kit. Hewitt or Hewitt Industries makes and sells them if I remember correctly. The bypass kit may help with your problem.

The dealer by me just fixed my P0418 issue under warranty for my 2010 5.7 DC. But It only had 12k miles on it when I brought it into them. My general feeling was that they made an exception based on mileage, but I could be wrong. Also, and I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I was also told that my truck was originally designated for sale on the west coast, and that may have helped with warranty coverage as well.
I wasn't looking a gift horse in the mouth so I just nodded and said ok when they said it was on the house.

...well there you have it then.

My guess is that even if you are outside the mileage but well within the time-span, if you throw the adult version of a temper tantrum (politely escalating the issue from supervisor to supervisor, to writing letters etc), you might be able to get it covered. That has worked for me in the past.

I had this happen on my 06 Tundra at around 170k . I researched it quite a bit and since I was past my warranty period I found that my only two options were to replace it with expensive Toyota parts or have this mod done (ask someone with more knowledge like LOTSOFTOYS if this is a good idea or not, but it seems legit. (I would try the reflash mentioned above first though)

Here is a link from when I was looking into it a while back.

    http://www.tundraheadquarters.com/blog/air-injection-system-bypass-module/

I ended up ignoring it instead of trying the module and the engine code went away after a while. (This is due to the fact that with cold weather the pump can easily get stuck open or closed. Never had a problem again until the following winter the first time it got real cold, and at that point I decided to fix the truck up a bit and sell it for a new one).

It is also worth mentioning that the module doesn't actually fix anything, it just tricks your truck into thinking that everything is okay. Which is actually fine, because if I remember correctly, the secondary air injection system only comes on to reduce emissions during a cold start. So in short, It won't hurt anything if this system isn't functioning (which is why I chose to ignore it), but you should definitely have it fixed in some way so the engine code goes away and you don't miss problems that may arise in the future.

I got p0441 and p0445 the other day on my.06. something to do with the secondary air valve malfunctioning iirc. I did not see either of my codes on the Hewett bypass video info on YouTube. But it seems like my issue is along the same lines

I've started a petition on Change.org for Toyota to address this issue. Here's the link: http://chng.it/p5gJY4rp7M
It saddens me that a company that I've been loyal to for over 30 years has let a problem like this continue at the consumers expense. Please pass this on to anyone you know has had the same problems. My truck is in "limp" mode now and I'm on the 3rd repair for the same problem.

Yep, just got mine fixed $2200.00. Wished I had known about the bypass system prior to paying out all that cash that I couldn’t afford knowing that it can happen again

I'm now doing my third repair as well. Only ONE under warranty and bypass kit won't work after ECM update. I've never been such a disgusted truck owner. All my life, every vehicle outside of one rogue Buick had been Toyota. An 86 Celica, '90 Celica, '94 Corolla, '99 Camry '01 4 Runner '05 Rav 4 '07 Camry '16 Tacoma '18 Rav 4 and finally got the truck of my dreams '09 Tundra only to be met with more issuse than ANY of the other vehicles combined. The 01 4 Runner has 600k+ miles and I've replaced the starter and alternator ONCE. That's it. A few batteries and tune ups. I waited for Toyota to step it's truck game up for years and sadly looks like I'll be going Mopar.

Yeah, that’s understandably disappointing. So far no issues with my ‘15 with 78K miles, but issues like this keep me a bit concerned, especially with the ridiculously high cost of repair.

I had great luck with a ‘99 and ‘03 Tacoma. Two of the most reliable, durable, problem-free vehicles that went to 200K miles without issue. My ‘92 4Runner, however, suffered from the infamous 3.0 V6 headgasket failure. It blew on me twice, with repair costs of $1500 each. Everything else about that 4Runner was bulletproof, but Toyota really messed up with that lousy engine.

It’s a shame the AIP has been such an expensive failure for the early Tundras. Well, I say early Tundras because I’m not yet aware of any 3rd gen Tundras having that problem, but I could be wrong about that. If I’m not wrong about that, why can’t Toyota incorporate the fix from the 3rd gen Tundras?

FYI I tried the bypass and it didn't really work, ended up spending the$2200. The bypass made it better for a while, then it started acting up again. The mechanic who worked on it said he wouldn't run a bypass long term anyway, because he had seen them do something, can't remember what he said, but bad in the end.

I got the same error on my 2005 4-Runner. Have any of you tried using the Secondary Bypass Kits? Just curious.

I do not want to spend $2k - $3k to fix this if the bypass kits work.

BTW, my 4-Runner has 130,000 miles.

Thanks Jared, I did not see your post when I posted. I am curious what the long term issues are.

    I
I don't know the long term issues, don't know much about mechanics at all. The tec told me it runs the motor in a bad way, hot or something in certain situations and that he had been coming across them having problems running the bypass long term. for me the bypass worked some days, others days the truck ran very poorly. having trouble starting, and not running, i don't know full power or right sound. when i finally took the bypass off and got the truck repaired at dealership, the thing i was trying to avoid, it finally ran like i remembered it to. i was on the bypass for like 9 months. always wondered what was different for me since there is like 30k positive reviews for the bypass on ebay...

Is there a relay that is part of the SAI secondary air injector system? I went from 2 codes to 10 after replacing both valves and pump for bank #1. Thanks in advance

Just had mine replaced yesterday $2200. Did they improve the internal parts of the pumps and valves to prevent corrosion failure? I was thinking of making a filter out of air cleaner filter material and a soup can, cover the inlet tubes so maybe water will hang up on fibers to help prolong moisture corrosion again.

I don’t know about the internals being improved, but I believe the new pumps had some sort of shroud installed on them to reduce the likelihood of water being sucked up into the system.

After burning two tanks of gas since installing the bypass my MPG’s are up by 1mpg and I can’t explain it. Same driving habits and routes. Interesting.

    Quick follow up;

I took my Tundra for its first Emissions test today since installing the bypass kit and it passed without incident. I was a little concerned because Massachusetts has strict emissions testing, but under the tested categories the secondary air system simply registered as “ready”. This kit has been well worth the $400 spent.
