Every year I keep hoping Toyota will release a diesel option for the Tundra. Sadly every year no diesel for the Tundra. My buddies at the plant in San Antonio said 2019 is the next big change to the Tundra. I haven't had anyone confirm a diesel option will happen in the future. I hope if a diesel option is available it's horse power and torque stats are impressive. I want to be able to pull a full size toy hauler and not feel it.

What would be your ideal diesel motor for a Tundra?
What do you think Toyota would charge for a diesel option?

I keep reading that 2017 was going to have a diesel option. That was the biggest tease and let down. IMG_5153.jpg

I dont get it....why all this diesel mania. The 5.7 tows just fine for a half ton truck and has way less problems than diesel motors. Diesel motors are much heavier, add thousands of $ to the sticker price, way more expensive to maintain and all choked up by emission mandates. The whole concept of a diesel engine in a half ton truck is pointless. If you want to tow more than 10,000 lbs then get a 1 ton diesel from the big three.
To put a diesel engine in a Tundra to make it tow more they would have to strengthen the frame, enlarge the brakes, add two or three more leafs to suspension, design whole new transmission, and the list goes on.....then you have a 3/4 or 1 ton truck that rides like crap anyhow. The Tundra is a 1/2 ton truck....Toyota said they aint gonna build 3/4 or tunners.

If they're gonna put a diesel with a lot of torque, might be good to have a manual tranny option. I can envision a torquey diesel tearing up an automatic.

I use my Tundra for work a lot. So having more torque would help when pulling heavy trailers. I know not everyone likes the diesel trucks but I would like to see a Toyota 3/4 or 1 ton diesel if I could. I love Toyota and wish I could tow a skidsteer on a trailer. But I'm not worried about being practical I just want a big and beefy truck anyways. If I wanted a fuel saver I would get a Prius, hate my ride and wear some dark sunglasses. Lol

I wouldn't hold my breath. Outside of them testing the 5.0 Cummins a few years ago there has been no information from any reputable sites/blogs since. Any site saying it's coming is just repeating old rumors as fact.

The engine has seemed to be somewhat of a disappointment in the Titan XD. Granted maybe it would do an it better in a Tundra weighing slightly less but right now it doesn't seem worth paying for the diesel over the 5.6 in the Titan. There are plenty of things I'd rather have Toyota improve on in the next Tundra before I'd ever want them to worry about bringing a diesel to market.

That's why I think Dodge is on the right track with the 3.0L ecodiesel. No, I wouldn't own a Dodge, but their fuel mileage is impressive, while still being very capable for a 1/2 ton.

Tundras already have brakes bigger than any one-ton out there, heck, the front brakes are on par with 5 ton trucks with hydro brakes.

You should really get on some of the diesel Ram sites. The 3.0 is a pos. I have a friend that got rid of his rather quickly before the 36k mile warranty period.

    Second, the brakes:

Tundra comes with plenty of “whoa” power, too, with class-leading 4-wheel disc brakes with ventilated rotors: 13.9 inches and 1.26-inches thick in front with segment-exclusive 4-piston calipers, and 13.6 x 0.71-inch rear rotors with 2-piston calipers.

    Maximum Lateral Runout : .002"
Mounting Type : Type K - Rotor Only. Wheel Studs Are Pressed Into The Hub Only. The Rotor Is A Loose Fit On The Hub & Is Retained By Either Machine Screws Or The Wheel Nuts. See Diagram For More Information.
    Vented / Solid : Vented
    # of Bolt Holes : 8
    Bolt Circle Diameter : 7.09"
Brake Rotor Discard Thickness : 1.516"
Brake Rotor Thickness New : 1.575"
    Center Hole Diameter : 5.01

Brake Rotor Discard Thickness : 1.28"
Brake Rotor Thickness New : 1.339"
    Center Hole Diameter : 5.01"

The Tundra has some really, let me repeat, really good brakes if you don't toast them. That being said, they are not even in the same ballpark as a 1 ton truck, let alone a 5 ton truck. When people spurt out this kind on nonsense I just shake my head.

Our regional office is in KC and those guys have assured us that there are no plans for a diesel in the near future. They have allowed a couple companies to come up with prototypes for a Tundra diesel platform but there are no plans for production.

Toyota have their own diesel engines. I hope they go with their own and not a Cummins. the 4.5L V8 from the Land Cruiser is really nice.
    Not holding my breath though.

If they ever did go with a diesel I think the Cummins would be more likely since they already had been doing testing with it plus it's already certified for US use. It would be a lot more of an investment and trouble to use one of their engines used elsewhere in the world.

I would hope not. The 5.0 Cummins is a chump. Look at how it performs in the Titan XD. The Titan XD with its gas counterpart beat the Cummins up the Ike Gauntlet aka Vail Pass. Never have I heard of a mordern diesel getting spanked by the same manufacturer gas motor. Last time that happened was back when Dodge V10 trucks had more HP/TQ than the Cummins motor for that year (1994).

I know. I mentioned above that it doesn't seem to be very impressive thus far. Just pointing out that the 5.0 would be more likely than the 4.5 Toyota used in the Land Cruiser overseas. I don't think a diesel is going to happen anyway so it's a moot point.

I thought I made it clear I wouldn't own a Dodge - it's the CONCEPT of small fuel efficient diesel in a half ton that I like. With a side of reliability please.

On the brakes, OK, maybe I'm a few years behind on domestic 1tons, which have been severely under-braked until a few years ago at least. My 2006 Tacoma had the same diameter front rotors as my buddies 2007 ram 3500 Cummins. And smaller than the brakes on my '08 Tundra for sure.

And 5tons with hydro brakes run 14" rotors, industry standard. They do crack often, I've probably replaced 400 of the damn things over the years, but 14" is what they are.

In the end, my point was the Tundra's brakes are plenty and then some for a 1/2 ton truck, something we do seem to agree on, not trying to turn a Tundra into a 1ton, cause they aren't.

That is the point, a small daily driven diesel has a butt load of issues, regardless of manufacture. There is a reason I do not DD mine and purchased another Toyota product to handle those duties.

Yes, the industry standard is 14" rotors, but that is where it stops. There are different thicknesses and caliper/pad sizing is very different. If the rotors are getting cracked, the drivers need to learn how to drive or different retarders are needed so service brakes are not used exclusively. I have driven class 5/7/8 trucks up to the top of Pikes Peak Tollway (google that) for 3 months straight without having brake issues.

You may have forgotten or didn't know, but I have worked in the diesel truck industry, specifically Dodges with the Cummins. For you to compare your friends 07 Cummins powered truck rotors and brake system to your 06 Tacoma is just ignorant.
Your 06 Tacoma had 12.5 or 318.7mm for you Canadians and your friends Dodge has 13.855" rotors, and a hell of a lot thicker.

I have a Tacoma in my garage right now with 34k miles and the rotors and pads are junk. Needs full replacement. I have handled a few Toyota rotors as well, and there is no comparison.

And yes you were trying to make this a Tundra vs 1 or 5 ton. You just got called out on your bullshit, that is all.

This kind of crap is what gets people in trouble when buying a truck. Hell, I even made a mistake when buying mine due to weight ratings. Only reason I kept the truck was due to fully knowing my Jeep was going to be down and had no plans of towing anything over 8k lbs for long distances for 3 years. When I started towing heavy, issues started popping up.

We have already seen a lady on here buy a Tundra to pull her horse trailer and it was to heavy for it. She just ended up keeping her Tundra and using her boyfriends dodge diesel for the heavy work. Hope they don't break up or something.

Let's not make the Tundra out to be what it is not. This site is to damn good to start pulling that crap. The Tundra, in my opinion is the best overall 1/2 ton truck, a blast to drive day in, day out for many years. People use the Tundra for work and play hard every day...but it has limits, no different than a 3/4, 1 ton or class 8 tractor/trailer.

ColoradoTJ, you make some valid points, and I stand corrected on the Tacoma rotor diameter vs. the 3500. It was his '99 3500 that has 12.5" rotors, not the '07 like I stated - my sincere apologies for the BS. And yes, there are other factors beyond diameter, you are right. I did get 172,000 Km out of the OE pads and rotors on that Tacoma, so will agree that brake issues are largely related to driving habits, especially in the mountains like we both get to deal with.

Let me ask you one thing. If I was trying to say that a Tundra was equal to a one-ton, why would a SMALL diesel competitive to the VM Motori be my pick? My point was that the Tundras brakes are plenty for a 1/2ton, which the Tundra is. We both know there's a lot more differences between a half ton and a one-ton, never mind a 5 ton. I'm sorry I worded it poorly and exaggerated.

Ha, all this on a thread of a very unlikely possibility - a Diesel Tundra.

Maybe I'll just start a new thread about when Tundra will have a flying Tundra instead. Haha.
Yup! I also want to have the fully loaded toy hauler and boat behind the space shuttle. You can't take it all with you, unless your in a TUNDRA!
