Crappy stock sound system

Hey guys have a 13 CM black on black I love the truck was a gm guy before but the sound system is terrible have the stock navigation and backup camera has anybody upgraded? Any suggestions before I buy some new speakers?

 

Yep. I have a 2016 and audio does suck. For some reason CDs come across nice and loud, but mp3 and radio is horrible. Driving with the windows down in the summer is tough because I have to crank the radio past 50 to hear it (maybe I'm getting old). I have thought about it upgrading, but not high on my list of mods. Plenty of folks on here who have upgraded and sure will chime in soon.

Never been too happy with the stock unit in my Crewmax. Satellite radio and MP3 were always a lot lower volume than the regular FM stations and CDs. My wife's Sequoia has no such issues

 

I upgraded to Kenwood. Great sound now
Also, if you have the $$, Alpine makes an awesome unit for the gen 2 tundras. My friend has it in his RW and it is super nice.

Yup, crappiest sound system I've ever had on any of my cars. Oh well, it's way way at the bottom of the list so I'll be living with it. Still love my damn truck though.

It depends on what kind of money you want to spend and what all you are willing to replace.

Toyota head units, at least the majority if not all, put out a dirty signal. Meaning, any amplified sound from them will most likely give you some white noise that you can hear, whether the volume is up or all the way down. sucks, but if it were up to me, I would want to keep it stock since you have a factory nav. I replaced mine, but it was the basic head unit.

Your speakers, basic or JBL, suck right off the back. Not an insult, just a fact. They went cheap on them. So you will probably want new ones and a nice amp for them.

The problem comes when you pair the factory head unit to new amp and speakers. You will need a line converter. If you go with a basic or audiosound, it's a 99 percent chance you will get the dirty signal come thru. The only chance you have at filtering it out is something like taco tunes offers or even more high end system of line converter that you can "tune" out the dirty signal.

Or you can just replace it all. Including the head unit. It's a little bit of a job, but worth it. I even replace all of the tiny wiring to the speakers with 16 guage wire.

+1. swap head unit, amp ,door speakers + sub should get you a nice sound.
you can also re-wire and use soundproof materials inside to get an even better sound.

 

Yea I have been doing research and I'm not to big on tons of bass just want to be able to jam. Think I'm going to go with jl audio or pioneer. Seem to have good reviews and are fairly priced.

Yes, I like it. I didn't buy a nav system since I always use my phone and didn't want to have to pay for maps. It's pretty nice though.

 

I like my Kenwood too.

He also just released a full plug and play 1000 watt amp for the tundra.

 

I never really enjoyed my entune (non JBL) the speakers would rattle a lot when the bass hit. I added 1 amp for the door speakers, and 1 mono for my sub. I also got an android headunit and have had it about 2 years with no issues. sound quality is much better. I can also use any app on the Google Playstore and Amazons appstore paid about 189.00. So as long as you have a data connection you will be able to use any internet radio app iHeart Radio, SiriusXM internet app, Google music etc...also the Torque app (to monitor temps, speed, voltage, that the display screen can't and to check for misc fault codes.

 

Well ask him to come tell us about the recurve... I want to know if it will actually filter out the bad signal from stock head units.

 

I can tell you for a fact that it does. I've had the recurve on my previous 2015 Tundra. I also have several buddies with the recurve set up as well. I'm a big audio guy and I've had several fully amplified stereos. The taco tunes stuff is very well laid out and makes the install a lot easier since the equipment is made for plug and play. They can also includes the tools for tuning your own stereo. I still like an aftermarket stereo to get the best sound quality and a better line output. But the stock stereo is tied into a lot of the truck features like steering wheels controls & the center gauge display for navigation. I know you can program most of the steering controls to an aftermarket head unit but it can be a pain. I'll get the links for you on Taco Tunes stuff and post it. They usually do full length videos on installation of their equipment. Taco tunes also makes some really handy plastic machined adapter plates for converting the stock speaker mounts into 6 1/2" round speakers.

I have the taco tune adapter plates in my truck now. My system is fully replaced, including wiring. My system is great, but I do wish I could have the regular old stock radio back. It's very hard for me to believe the recurve would get the horrible signal filtered to where it sounds perfect, but I'd be willing to try. All my features work including the steering controls now. I have literally never heard of any tundra owner that has been able to keep a stock head unit and not have white noise. But.... It would be nice. Especially for a guy that had a nav hu.

But if you did this with a tundra and didn't have crap signal, I'd love to do the same. Can't believe I'm willing to tear everything apart again, but I'd love to be able to tell people it can be done and have quality sound. I'm pretty big on audio, so I love clear, clean sound. I usually have a cd playing for that reason I noticed when I stream the quality sucks with a cd the sound is much better

 

I've been looking at the Taco Tunes since I got mine..I'm very interested especially if we can get a discount. There stuff isn't cheap but the reviews are pretty good and I'd like to give it a shot

 

One thing I loved about the

$129 audiocontrol lc7i 6-channel line output converter with accubass

audiocontrol lc7i, was the INCREDIBLE amount of power it sent to my system. It really woke it up. If it wasn't for the white noise I couldn't get rid of, it would have been perfect

 

I've got alpine for low end, and kenwood for mids/highs on door speakers, and JL for subs. Couldn't be happier. And it puts most of the crappy honda civics with 15's to shame.

 

I bought my set up from 12volttech. very pleased with proce service and sound. kenwood 10s, 5 channel amp and image dynamics headunit. i have the abive alpine hu and added extra id tweets in the dash. entire cab is lined with raamat also. dang doors feel bulletproof! +1 for 12volttech. got some poor press but ive ilused him on 2 builds now without issue.

 

Only thing I have left to swap is the head unit. The dirty signal it puts out is driving me nuts. I'm running alpine type-r components in the front, type-r coaxial in the rear, JL amp and subs. Sounds great, clear and loud...but the signal is dirty for sure.

I can't decide on a hu, and which kit to get to keep all functionality of steering wheel controls, reverse cam, etc.

 

You can keep the stock backup cam FYI, you will need a step down converter to get it at 6v exactly. I have an android headunit and have to stock backup camera. The headunit I have has built in controls that hook up directly to the SWC wire.
