What home improvement work did you do today?

My parents built their retirement home at the 40 years of marriage mark. My Mom said after birthing 4 kids, my Dad traveling a ton throughout his career and multiple moves, IT was the ultimate marriage test. Stay strong!

 

I have the Generac 11kW backup for my place. My friend and I hooked it up. It kicks in about a dozen times a year, like when there’s too much snow on the panels. I’m totally off-grid. No power lines around for miles.

 

Started pouring my barn slab at 4am this morning. My concrete guys will pour and finish the whole slab in one day.

 

No sleep for the driven.

It’s a big pour and the temps are in the high 90s, so we have to start early.

 

All good. I didn’t take offense.

 

Finishers are working on the finish for my barn foundation. I should have all the forms stripped off by this weekend. It’s been a long 14 hour plus day. Time to relax.

 

Did you already post details about your barn? i missed if you did. How big and what’s it being used for? It looks great... and huge.

 

It’s for a 20 stall horse barn. It’s a good size barn.

 

tested out the generator today for obvious reasons. (live in Charleston)

Gate is finally wired and working, with a keypad (and added numbers) . Soooo much better hitting the garage door opener on your mirror vs getting out and moving a gate manually

Paid someone to pressure wash all my aggregate today, and laid down the first $1,000 spray of concrete sealer. I thought 3 X 5 gallon buckets would do, but apparently I was off by 50%.
F me!!!!
Have to stop tomorrow and grab 15 more gallons.

Thx! I can’t count for shit apparently. I was off 1,000 Sq ft on the aggregate concrete. This sealing shit is starting to hurt the pocketbook LOL
At triple the cost of the highest rated Home Depot sealer, I’m hoping I won’t have to touch it again for 4-5 more years. Wishful thinking.
Laid another 5 gallons down tonight.

Was able to throw some plywood up in half of the barn/shop for storage. Of course I was 4 sheets short there too. I failed math horribly in HS/College, and it shows.
Not quite sure yet how I’m going to get all the junk I need up in the barn. I really didn’t want to build stairs, and I don’t think they make a 10ft pull down ladder.
Working on the doors next.

Found a crazy looking spider spinning a web on my front porch too. Normally I kill them all because I’m not too fond of them, this one I let live lol. He was a big fucker.

My kids named it and thought it was awesome LOL.

 

Yes they do make a 10' pull down attic stairs I have one in my garage.

Question for you on the new garage storage area. In the photo it looks like you have 2”x8”x20’ long overhead. Do you plan to have a lot of weight in the over head storage area? Just wanted to make sure since they’re are a couple concerns for framing I can see. Just trying to look out for you and your new garage.

 

One of my favorite processes in a new home is the trim work details. I have poplar baseboards and casing being installed on this new addition project.
I like little details like this trim around the water shut off valve.

Mock-up samples of the beams I’m going to do for the master bedrooms coffered ceiling. All of this solid wood will be primed and painted when it’s completed. The master bedroom will have judges paneling done around the whole perimeter of the room.

 

Kickass!!!! I’m picking one up tomorrow! Lol

LOL! I figured you might mention something! I still need to do work before I throw stuff up there (joist hangers and some more bracing), but no, it’s only the garage storage stuff. Thanksgiving bins, Christmas bins, old Tundra exhaust/grill etc. It won’t be much weight at all.
They are 2x10x20’s.

 

I got to deal with this in my fridge today. You'd think for as long as they've built fridges, they would have thought of a way to prevent ice build up...

 

No kidding right! came home and my ice machine was leaking and ice was all bunched up..

Glad to hear you’ve got a plan. Just a friendly suggestion, install some squash blocking below the point load over your window. Looks like your ridge framing load transfers onto the the two areas circled in blue. The squash blocks will helps transfer the weight load over the window header. I’m not trying to knock your garage but I wanted to help prevent cracking on future drywall or potential settlement over time. You have a great looking garage and home!

FYI - sounds like a piece of ice or something may have lodged your ice “slide door” open. There is a door in your freezer that opens and closes when you hit the ice button. The door allows warm air to come up from where you normally fill your cup up with ice. Then the warm air hits the ice that’s clogged up in the shoot, and causes the leak - and the blockage.

 

I've checked that.. no dice.

 

Dang. That was the easy fix.
