Hey All you beautiful Tundra owners!

I wanted to drop a post here for general LED questions that any of you may have. I know that this can be a confusing market for new guys to jump into, so I wanted to extend myself here to help anyone out with any questions or concerns they may have about upgrading their Tundras lighting systems, or any vehicle for that matter! Whether that's LED/HID Bulb replacements, BI-LED Headlight conversions, Light Bar installs, etc!

Hopefully some of you hop on here and ask those questions you have piled up in your head, I'm more than happy to offer any services or advice! Remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question.

oooh, I have a couple.

1.) resistors... How do I know which ones to get? Is there a way to calculate what Watts, Voltage and Ohms needed? I have seen everything from 5, 10, 27 watts and different voltage and usually 3 ohm or 6ohm.

2.) LED light color vs the lens it is shining through.
So say I am wanting to put LEDS in my brake lights that have red colored lenses. If I have 3 different LED bulbs, different colors (red, amber, white) all equal in lumens and everything, just their color emitting is different will they look different behind a red lens?

I was always told/advised to match LED bulbs with the color lens they will be behind to achieve maximum output. any truth to that?

 

Fantastic question my man! With Resistors, typically a 50w 6Ohm style Resistor is good for nearly any Turn Signal application. There are a few oddball cases where specific resistors like a 50w 3Ohm resistor and so forth is needed to satisfy a circuit with the proper amount of resistance. As a rule of thumb, a 50w 6Ohm resistor will work in just about every application.

As for selecting which color of LED to install into a specific housing, you were told correctly! Always match the LED Bulb color with it's housing that it will be installed into. For example, for a Reverse light, you will install a White LED. For a Brake Light, you will install a Red LED, and so on! It's not so much a difference in output, but more of a color correction. If you put a White LED into a Red lens, the color will be offset and somewhat orange-ish. Matching colors will present the true color it should portray and will look the best on the outside.

2019 TRD with led headlights. For the turns front and rear are these plug and play?

 

Hey There!

For that application, the LED Turn Signal bulbs itself will plug into the OEM socket just like the stock bulb does. As for the Resistor required to eliminate Hyperflash, you will need to tap that resistor into the Ground Wire and the Indicator Wire. This will eliminate any Bulb-Out warnings, Hyperflash, or any other possible issues! It takes about 5-10 minutes per side, so not too long at all! Have a set of Wire Strippers handy, some pliers if you are using the provided T-Taps, or if you are Soldering them into the wires (Preffered), you will need Electrical Tape to cover the exposed wires. I hope this answers your question!

 

Yeah... that’s what I was afraid of... you lost me at wire strippers and electrical tape....lolol...not going to hack into my 290 mile truck!! Lololol

 

Hey that is completely understandable my friend! They are fantastic trucks and it's definitely concerning to strip the harnesses on them. If you are okay with Hyperflash, you don't necessarily NEED resistors to run LED Turn Signals, as they will still function and blink, just rapidly. Some people actually prefer this for some reason, as they feel it attracts more attention to their signaling. Personal opinion, I think it is quite annoying haha. On the Dash, you will have Hyperflash, and the possibility of a "Bulb-Out" warning popping up as well. To each their own! Great Question!

So I have everything on my tundra except headlights and fogs from you guys, saving up my pennies for headlights. Fog lights I wanted to try something different so I installed deauto leds pretty darn cool..flipping the factory fog light switch off/on you can have either white yellow or halogen color some can be configured to strobe. Y’all should check them out and see if it’s something you can add to your product portfolio. I can not speak of longevity yet bc iv only had them around 9 months.

I have a 2019 Tundra with LED headlights. I replaced the front turns with LED's with no need for anything else. Plug and play and no hyper flash. I didn't do the backs because they seem bright enough. The fronts were not bright enough the LED headlight drowned them out at night.

There is another thread on here called "I hate my turn signals" or something like that and it has a ton of info on what bulbs fit and don't. Make sure you check that thread before purchasing from places like Amazon. My first set that said they fit didn't and the ones they said didn't fit, did fit.

As far as Headlights go, were you looking to go with a Housing replacement or An LED Bulb upgrade?

I've been dabbling in the LEDs the past couple of weeks. I have replaced the interiors, license plate, and just completed the reverse lights.

Would like to eventually do the fog lights and down the road maybe the headlights.

Am I correct in the following?:
* Only need a resistor if it's a turn signal or blinking light.
* To put LEDs in headlights, you will need a harness.
* I think you chimed in on another thread regarding this, but as long as the bulbs are quality, should not be a concern with blowing fuses or bulbs, right? I would think it actually lightens the load on the circuit and reduces the chance for errors, but I've never been mistaken for an electrician.

They are something else, let me tell you! They look SLICK. Definitely keep tabs for Preorders, as they will be HOT on release!

 

Great questions! To start, all LEDs that are Turn Signals will need a Resistor to eliminate hyperflash and any Error messages on the Dash. With these bulbs having power pulsed On/Off to them, the system reads them as a Bulb-Out and triggers the Hyperflash to alert the driver.

As for Headlights, pretty much all LEDs are Plug and Play with your stock connections! Certain bulbs need an Anti-flicker module, or PWM, which smoothes out the electrical system entering the headlight bulb to make it compatible with the LED's lower resistance. Some HIDs rely on Relay Harnesses, but one we carry from GTR Lighting is fully Plug and Play as well, the ballast plugs into the OEM Connector, and the bulb plugs into the other end of the ballast. Boom, you're done!

For the Fuse popping LEDs, that's correct as a rule of thumb. As long as the LED is quality and made well rather than for Quantities, you will not encounter any issues with the system or any Fuse pops.

I have a 2016 Tundra, so I could plug in some LEDs and go? I was thinking that the harness/reflector/something had to be changed in order to get the proper light output/direction. Fwiw, not interested in HID, just LED bulbs.

 

LEDs like the V.4 can plug in without any additional PWMs, just the bulbs! In the halogen 14-18 Tundra Headlights, the beam pattern is nearly identical to OEM, check out this video where we install the V.4 and do a test at 25 feet!

HDR!!! Has sick lights. I had a 2017 and I swapped in the headlight bulbs with the fans was easy minus the dumb design in the tundra requiring to take the grill out but still a cake. Then I went and traded it in idiot.... Now I have a 2019 made on a Friday... with OEM LEDs that are ok but suck compared to HDR. Anyone need a pair they were in my truck for like 4 months. HDR I want you back in my truck

The OEMs are pretty good! The only downside is it being a Reflector headlight, lacking a Projector setup to really dial in the beam pattern and create a solid Hotspot. You may want to look into the Morimoto XBs if the OEMs aren't cutting it for you! An LED Fog light also can help out quite a bit!

 

OK...so which ones did you get?

What do y'all carry in terms of puddle/ step rail LEDS? I have some that are only a couple of inches long, would like some longer ones.

Will these work in my tundra for the rear blinkers?

 

Good question! I know I have seen a few guys get handy with these guys, they mount them up below the door or on the Sidestep to come on when the door is opened up. Is this something that you were referring to?

(You would need to wire them up to the Door lights, Like a Logo Projector.)

 

For your MX-5, you have an H7 Low beam and an H9/H11 High beam! The V.4 LEDs would do great in both applications! These are Plug and Play bulbs that directly replace your Halogen bulbs without any wiring or complications. They will offer you a HUGE increase in light output, along with a very tasteful and modern Diamond White color! The performance of these LEDs is where they really shine, offering 3,600 Lumens per Bulb! Compared to the typical 600-800 Lumens from a Halogen bulb, that is a massive increase! The LED chips on these bulbs are positioned very precisely, mimicking the Halogen filiments on Halogen bulbs. This allows the V.4 to maintain an excellent beam pattern much like OEM, only much brighter!
