Yup. It really sucks on smaller cars when it gets stuck on top and there's no way to get to it without removing the exhaust pipe/muffler/cat that its stuck to. Customer usually won't pay for all of that so they just have to live with it.

Those are such a pain in the ass. Some shops have above ground lifts and can easily take the cab off. I've heard its a lot easier that way but our lifts are in ground.

Is there a way to do a visual check for the cam tower leak?

Look through the back of the wheel wells, behind the front tires. At the top of the cylinder heads are the cam towers. They normally leak at the farthest outside corner which is the lowest part. They commonly leak directly on top of the exhaust manifolds.Screenshot_2016-11-30-08-08-48.jpg

Here are a couple more pictures, for reference. See that grey bead of silicone? That's where they were leaking.

Thanks for the extra pictures. I'm assuming that these were taken from the wheel wells? I'm trying to orient myself so I know where to look.

Okay guys, looks like I have a leak. This is on the passengers side. I took it to the dealer today and they have the Tundra. They are ordering valve cover seal and said if they get it tomorrow, they can fix it and return car to me by end of the day tomorrow. I will be discussing with them my disappointment in this leak, but I want to ask if there is any advice about what to look for to make sure this repair is fixed properly.

Thanks for everyone that helped me figure this out so quickly.

I would start by making sure they reseal the cam towers instead of replacing the valve cover gasket.

The valve covers aren't leaking. The cam towers/cradles are leaking. They are that sliver of aluminum between the cylinder head and valve cover gasket. They leak between the cylinder head and the cam tower. It is likely the technician either isn't savvy to the actual problem or doesn't want to do the work under warranty. When we reseal the cam towers we order a full rebuild kit. The job involves tearing the engine down to everything BUT taking the heads off. This includes removing the front engine cover, valve covers, timing chains, and then the cam tower(s). It is a big job but doesn't pay very well under warranty.

I wouldn't assume they are trying to screw you over. It could be an honest mistake. I would just like to insure it is repaired properly.

Edit: Also, you should expect the truck to be in the shop a couple days at least. The job can be completed in a day but I like to let the FIPG (seal packing) set up overnight to insure it cures and seals properly.

Thanks. I just spoke to the service manager. He said that it looks like the valve cover right now, but they will check further once they get the valve cover off and If needed, they will go further. I don't think they are trying to screw me, but I am not very confident in their diagnostic abilities right now. So I appreciate the advice here.

It can be hard to track down if you are not familiar with the problem. It will definitely appear to be a valve cover gasket leak. It has all of the symptoms of it. If you want, you can bring it to KS and @trdlife would love to reseal it. :boink:

Sometimes work takes me to Kansas City MO. That's the closest I get to where you are. If I find myself out your way, I'll buy you dinner and some beers.

What the dealer that I took my truck to for the Cam Tower leak did was to first steam clean the oil from the area and then put a dye in the oil. They then asked me to drive it some more. When I returned (a week later), they used an ultraviolet light to determine the exact location of the leak. Maybe tactfully suggest something similar, or exactly that. I think that @cdkenne is very much steering you in the right direction.

I spoke to the service manager and I explained the cam tower thing. I was very professional and we both agreed that "neither of us want the vehicle to come back with the problem unresolved". I also spoke to the General Manager of the dealership and advised him of my expectations. They both assured me that they will have it looked over thoroughly when they take the valve cover off. If the vehicle comes back and leaks again, they will have already been for-warned.

I got the truck back yesterday. According to the tech, they found that the gasket on the passengers side valve cover was deformed. They replaced the gasket and cleaned up around the area. I drove it yesterday and did not notice any more "burning smell" and from what I can see from the wheel well, the area is clean at this point. I am keeping a close eye on it to see if it leaks, which would indicate that it isn't the valve cover gasket. Thanks and will let you know the verdict after a few more days of driving.

I'm glad you got it taken care of. I followed your thread from day 1 but stayed quiet since I can't offer any helps. There are so many little things that can go wrong with Toyota these days and sometimes it makes me want to joint the DARK side.

Brought my '15 GX460 in for 20,000 oil change (@17800 miles) and dealer called saying my Transfer Case is leaking and it will take about 10 hours to fix. Not very happy with the news since it is less than 2 years old and few miles on it. What makes me unhappy even more is the $133 bill for an oil change and car washed....BUT that is my fault for being lazy.
