Funny how things change, I was gonna get 17” wheels with some 35’s but now the wife wants a travel trailer since we are moving to Alaska on military orders. I got rid of both my sway bars so the kings can perform with no handcuffs now I’m thinking I should buy both or at least the front one. It should save us money living in a travel trailer versus hotels from CA all the way to the far northern 49th state. Gonna keep my stock limited 20’s and put stock size new tires back on there to help the truck perform a little better in stock form towing that far, plus MPG will be a little better than slapping on 35’s. We have not decided on a Travel trailer yet but would love to have an airstream, if we can nab one before the time to leave I’m definitely getting it.

Best of luck on your journey! Airstreams are sweet, and so iconic. You can always do 17s and 35s when you get there.

Thanks @Kerch71, Interesting there’s only 3 Toyota dealerships in the whole state and I hope they’re good. Thank you @COMiamiFan, name should probably be “noplaceforanislander” but one can adapt.

Good luck on the trip. I would defiantly put the front sway bar back on before towing all the way up there. I'm sure there are plenty of windy roads ahead of you.

Good luck and happy trails! Thank you for your service.....Eskimo Thor!

Not sure what the price point on those are, but I guess if you could get one on the cheap, it would save money (but then again, thinking of the gas consumption going through CA with their gas prices)
Would have to crunch some projected numbers to see which comes out best.

Yet, the most important variable out of all, would be your lady’s word LOL

    Better bundle up, bud!

Good advice @Law323 and thank you, a few of my Soldiers that are already there said its not that cold compared to the rest of Alaska, ive been stationed at Fort Carson Colorado before so i know a little bit about cold weather. Gas wont be an issue, we've been saving for quite some time so fueling up the tundra is no problem. Thank you @jeremyd, I love road trips and its a great way to see places we've never been before. We would've flown but there's no fun in that.

What suspension do you have up front? Have you considered the sumosprings coil inserts instead of the swaybar?

I tow a 35ft travel trailer every day so if you have any questions feel free to reach out.

thank you @saybng, trying to convince my wife to buy a new one or a used one if we can find it. I definitely will @Law323, I will update as often and try to get as much tundras tagged up there as I can. @Mwray8909 I have king shocks up front with stock 600# springs, I have never heard of those and i can add it to the mod list for towing. What is your current setup to make your towing safer? Im gonna get a weight distribution hitch, not sure if its better getting airbags, sumo springs in the rear or a different leaf pack. I'm definitely getting winter tires put on right before we leave CA.

I know right and thank you, I had a tacoma when I was in Virginia. We drove from there all the way here to CA, so glad we got the tundra, more room and power.

I know right? Bigger tires more mass then I would need to regear even though there are brave tundra owners on 40” tires stock gears, I would regear just to make sure the truck is working properly.

The deeper you look, the farther down the rabbit hole you'll go. Rotational mass vrs unsprung weight, wheel/rim offsets, CV shaft angles, rear driveline and Ujoint position, brakes, ring and pinion ratios, differential ratios, gas mileage, turning radius, towing capacity, suspension and brake line extension, cooling issues on inclines, equipment costs....

If the folks on 40s have the cash then everything can be addressed but it seems a hell of alot easier to pay the damn truck off and drive it till the wheels fall off.

    Right turn Clyde!

You can buy a lot of fuel for the cost of a new set of stock-size tires.

Unless you're concerned about your range between fill-ups it may not be worth the time and money to get set-up with different tires.

@Tierhog, I agree, the funny thing about getting old/wise, I’m 32.....is that I’m more into what I need than what I want. When all the needs are satisfactory then I might get what I want for the truck, but it does just fine stock. @careyrob I’m not worried about gas fill ups, got the budget for that. I only wanted stock size tires to help the truck be as stock as possible when it’s towing, which is better for it. I’m getting different sets of tires anyways. 5 wheels and tires for when it’s not winter and another 5 for winter with winter tires.

Right. Almost 50 here. The next biggee will be income/jobs in the post retirement phase, moving to a more retirement friendly place, and phasing in the wife's retirement and or wishes.

    House downsizing please... Lol

Crazy how perspectives change. It's almost in ten year blocks.

Was at my retirement job (Gun range and store) and a federal ATC and I spoke. He took his 30 years and SS advance and hasn't done squat since. Seems happy. Says moving to a retirement state is a critical step he should have taken. Makes ya think.

Yep.. Retired deputy here. All day after graves subpoenas, Baliff, coroner, jailer, and patrol...holidays, work injuries, arthritis.. You name it.

You work in Cali. You don't retire here. Once youngest graduates college, we are gone...or 4 years, whatever happens first.
