When the Tundra is running, I can smell some type of "burning" smell from near the front passenger side wheel well. It smells "hot" like something burning.

This doesn't appear to be normal to me, but I'm not sure. And there are no CEL's.

    What do you guys think?

    2014 Tundra CM 5.7l with approx. 21000x

I just bought this about 2 months ago and have always had this since I bought this.

I'll take a good look around the engine compartment. Nothing related to the brakes, because it smells hot when I start the car and leave it idling.

Does it smell like hot metal or something like a plastic piece against a hot part of the engine that is out of place?

Smells like something burning or melting, but I've looked and haven't seen anything obvious.

Oil leak? You're going to have to stick your head in there and look around.

It could be burning off. Either way, you're going to have to stare at it in order to determine the cause.

Like the other said, you may need to get up close and personal down there to narrow it down. Too hard to tell with that info alone, but I wonder if something blew up from the roadway, like a plastic bag or something, that is causing it.

    Good luck!

It smells like that at idle, right when I start the truck in the morning without driving it.

Depending on date of first use, it should still be under 3/36 warranty.

No wiring work done recently, other than retrofit headlights. However, this started before the retrofits. I am under warranty still, but wanted to understand this first before taking it to the dealer (first to eliminate any simple issues like burning debris, then to point the dealer to the problem in case they are not all that interested in diagnosing the problem).

The only burning smells I've dealt with on a vehicle with that low of miles (besides cam cradles) are seat heater controllers burning up and dust in the vents when the heater is first turned on for winter.

I had one of those plastic grocery bags hit my exhaust on my last truck - ran over it on the highway and thought it was gone. Guess again...it immediately stuck to the head pipe, and where the tail pipe goes over the rear axle. I didn't know what it was for a while because it smelled like burning brakes or petroleum/asphalt type of a smell and not really a plastic smell. After a lot of looking around, crawled under the truck to see it and then used a heat gun to melt it and paint scraper to peel it off. Could be something like this - even after scraping it off, it took a while for the smell to go away.

Could you use a infrared thermometer and see what areas are getting abnormally hot and then diagnose from there? Just an idea?

All great ideas guys. I'll make sure I check it out thoroughly this weekend. By the time I get home from work during the weekday, it's pitch dark. I think I have a better chance of spotting something in the daylight.

I drove over a plastic grocery bag on the road once and it flew up and melted to me exhaust. Took a long time to burn completely burn off even after scraping it off. Just a thought...

Were there any issues with the Cam Towers leaking on the 14s, or was that issue resolved by that model year?

Some 14's had the cam tower leak. I was thinking this may be OP issue ...but I just let it be.
