I have this gnarly patch on both rear fenders that I have been unable to clean with the usual suspects and could use some ideas from anyone interested, and especially anyone that has succeeded in cleaning theirs up. I've used dish soap, Spic & Span, and Adam's Heavy Duty All Purpose Cleaner and Degreaser.

It looks like some degraded rock protector strips. How about soaking a rag in some sort of adhesive remover like Goo gone or WD-40 etc. place that over the area and let it sit. Hopefully it can soften it.

That sure does look baked on! You may have to get creative and aggressive. Get a plastic putty knife and along with adhesive remover, slowly start working at the edge of the protection strip. Probably going to take a lot of elbow grease.

Another idea I’m having, tape off around the patch perfectly and rough it up with some sandpaper. Make sure you don’t go through the paint.

Well WD40 didn't have any effect on the patch or the funk on it. I did chip off a minute and degraded piece at one edge, leaving me with the impression that it was a thin, plastic-like sheet well bonded to the fender and nearly impervious to removal. [Impervious - defeating my will. Just makes me want to remove it all the more.] I'm thinking if I don't have success before next Tuesday when the rains depart, I might take a heat gun and give that a try.

Yeah not much is going to get through the top of that once clear plastic chip guard. Going to have to get underneath it as it is now one with your truck LOL

There is no easy way to do this. Another member @03tundra was able to remove his. You're going to have to pull up a stool and be prepared to be there a while. You can try heating it up and peeling it off. Just make sure the paint doesn't start to come with it.

Yeah, bad news. The mildew and dirt is trapped underneath it. No way to clean it, and almost impossible to take it off. I had the same on my Tacoma. I ended up painting over it just so it doesn't stick out like that.

Just be careful, I've taken paint right off a car with a pressure washer. There is much risk with this method.

A wild idea came to mind - sand it off and wrap the four wheel cover extensions in carbon fiber!? My experience with paint is limited to interior walls of houses and a few less than stellar exterior projects. Painting my rig is not something I have attempted before, but...

Possibly sanding it off, carefully of course, and touching up the paint should it be necessary, and I am sure it would. Then clear coat. With the extension being made of plastic, is this even possible? It currently is very unsightly and I really wish it gone, but I can live with it rather than screw it up by making it even more unsightly. In the mean time, I am preparing a list of things to try, with the least likely to be problematic on top and those that may create problems of their own on the bottom. Any magic bullets automatically move to the top. I appreciate any and all responses.

Mine are the same way. I've been thinking I may tape it off and paint over it with spray-on bedliner. Would look better and still provide rock chip protection.

Not a bad idea. You could go with one of my original suggestions and tape off just the area and sand it thin. Try not to make it into the paint and then see if you can get the rest off with some adhesive remover. If that doesn’t work then wrap it!

What I ended up doing is changing my truck to a two-tone. I painted the fender flares a darker gray (MGM actually) to cover up the ugly plastic pieces that I could not get off. I then painted the same color along the rocker panel and bumpers to tie it all in. I don't have any good pictures of it, but this one you can kind of see the texture of the cracked plastic, but it is not as noticeable as it was on the silver paint.

This might be the easiest solution. Since you still want the paint protection and a textured black piece would not look out of place there, and will cover up the ugly cracked plastic.

These things really work. Just attach to drill go for it. Won't damage paint. It's what I used to remove all badge tape residue and pin stripe.

I ordered the blades having decided this to be the avenue of my first attempt. I did try lifting an edge with a tiny Swiss knife I carry on my keychain and no heat gun assist and I did make headway, however small. Should this not work, I'll next be looking at the pressure washer idea as suggested by @Gotyour6.
I'm not so thrilled with the idea of me painting the area, but I have decided that the third choice would be for me to mask it off and apply a layer of bed-liner as suggested by @SC T100 .

Having written the above, I still would like to hear what others say - maybe a magic bullet is still out there. The weather here is fairly crappy and I have no intention of getting out and starting the removal anytime soon (I have no garage), so I have time to consider your input. Without question, I appreciate the ideas already brought forward, and though some are not contenders, who knows what tomorrow brings...:hattip:

Awesome! I saw a guy remove an old baked on sticker in seconds with one of those little blades. It was amazing! Good luck!

@Tundyfundy ... Success! - Well those little plastic razor blades came through - with an assist from a heat gun on a low setting, heating the area for a few seconds and then turning away. Came off in strips, but left a lot of hardened yet extremely sticky glue. I tried various means to remove the glue and got nowhere until I started using 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and a fine grit wet/dry sandpaper to break through the tenacious glue. Glue so sticky that it stuck to everything, the rags, my arm, my hands, oh yes, my hands were a sticky mess by the time I finished, requiring an alcohol bath all their own. It took about 20 minutes to strip the plastic but another hour + to get the glue off, and I had a couple minor muffs, mostly sanding through the color of the plastic to its black core. Tip: use an alcohol bottle that has a spout (hole) for flooding the area while using the sand paper, it really eases the glue removal. I used the Equate brand from Walmart.

Darkness closed in before I could get a buffer to it, so that is planned for tomorrow. There are a few fine scratches that I will have to polish out, but even now it looks quite a bit better than it did before I started. I'm very happy with the results.

Truly, the little razors were the key - anything else would have gouged the heck out of the fender flare. I used two of the 100 and probably could have gotten away with using just one. I'll make a point of taking a picture and uploading it sometime tomorrow. Thanks for the tip, bro.

Here is the area in this thread that needed the gnarly patch removed. I will admit to the need in the near future to touch up the paint as a result of the overly zealous sanding off of the glue. There is another gash above the area that needs attending and I will get them both later.

Likewise, this is my first try at using a polisher/buffer and my skill level probably could use a little more time behind the wheel, so to speak. I used Meguiar's 105 on an orange foam applicator, followed with 205 on a blue foam applicator. I'll probably wait until spring to do the touch up, after spending now until then learning the ends and outs of refurbishing auto paint. Still, when compared to the first photo that started this thread, there certainly is an improvement. Anyone who follows me should be careful of the sanding - duh.

Here is the other side that turned out much better, except for the gouge at the top of where the patch was. This is what might happen if you apply too much heat and are too vigorous in applying the plastic razor - my first go at the patch.
