Keep the 295/70/18's or get 285/75/18's?

So, after putting the Coachbuilder 1" shims up front and the +3 shackles in back on my 2019 Pro, I'm considering getting rid of the 295/70/18 Ridge Grapplers and putting on 285/75/18 Duratracs.

I'm just curious to what y'all may think of this. Yes, good idea or no, keep what ya got. I'm in north Georgia and mainly stick to daily driving but am considering moving to central Oregon.

Going from a 295/70/18 (34.3") to a 285/75/18 (34.8") tire is slighter taller, but thinner by 10mm. The weight is still the same at 69.5lbs.

Why are you looking to change?

Look at the Cooper AT3 XLT, the weight is amazing, they have a 60K warranty and drive super quiet on the roads of GA but can still get down in the red clay.

I always liked tall and skinny. Dont like rock chips on my paint or getting hassled by cops so i went with 285/75 also. I posted a few angles for someone else but I cant find them on my phone. I love um. Just sucks not much choices but this is my 2nd pair of duratracs n love them for what I do

I'm trying the 285/75 today. Tight fit, but I like tall and skinny also. Ground clearance without width. I love the looks of a lot of trucks here, but I am not currently interested in new wheels and flares so I prefer to keep them tucked under a bit more.

Yeah, I've been looking at the Cooper AT3 XLT's all day yesterday and seeing some good reviews. I think I'm going with those. I'll sell my Grapplers on here to someone I'm sure. I had Duratracs on my 2014 JK. They were good but wore quick.

What PSI are you running on your Coopers on the road?

I would have told you to go with 275/70/18s which is what I run (33" tire). This really matters when you get away from stock wheels with a higher offset.

Those Coopers LTs are e-series tires (10 ply). I'd tell you to start around 45psi and go up/down from there. You DO NOT fill them to the same tire pressure as you would your p-series tires nor do you fill them up to close to the max pressure on the tire (i've seen people go to 60 or even 70psi on an 80psi max e-series tire unloaded which is like driving on a wagon wheel). To underinflate means that your sidewall gets too hot and you will wear the outer edges of your tires prematurely. To overinflate means that the center tread of your tire will wear out prematurely and the ride will be a lot rougher (assuming an unloaded truck for your normal daily driving).

psi for psi, the p-series will have a higher load rating. Thus, you really need to do the table calculation in the document below. For example, a p-series tire @ 32psi might be able to support a load of 2300lbs, but it will take the e-series tire 45psi to support the same load. The idea behind the e-series tire is that it can support a heavier load and you adjust the pressure in the tires accordingly as you go up in weight.

    Load inflation tables:

42psi for me. Do the chalk test and see where you come out.

There are several threads on the forum that discuss max spare tire size. I did a search for spare tire size but could not find the one thread about it. I want to say people have fit a 35 under there with minor mods to the support brackets under there but without being able to find that thread I can’t confirm that.

I have 275/70s, stock suspension and they are nice tires. I do not notice any difference in loudness vs the stock Michelins. Wet traction is excellent. I will find out how they do in snow this winter but they have the 3 peaks. And as you can see, they look pretty cool too. Aggressive looks without the associated aggressive tire problems.tundra tire.jpg

I have 285/75r18... and considering 295/70r18 next time. Grass is always greener. I’d run what you have and then try the other size if you really want to still. I don’t think it will be a very notable upgrade either way.

Just switched from the Cooper AT3 XLT 285/75R18 to the Toyo AT III in the same size. My coopers had 9000 miles on them and looked brand new. A fellow Tundra owner wanted my wheels and tires and that is the only reason I changed from the Cooper to the Toyo. Both tires are almost identical noise, tread and warranty wise. The Cooper is a pound or two lighter but that’s it.

@2019-1794 I'm sure you've answered this question before but how did you get your hands on the LC wheels? Love the look of it with the white and 1794 badge!

@TRDBro Thanks!....My local dealer had them in stock, I’m not sure if someone ordered them and didn’t end up buying them or if they were takeoffs.... Talking with the service manger it didn’t seem like they were that difficult to order if someone did want a set.

I have a pro front grille and TUNDRA stamped on the tailgate like all the new models and people still ask me what it is.

And thank you, I first saw a Calvary blue one on this forum and it looked really clean to me also.

Change when worn. 295 is a good tire size too.

393D4C54-9725-4133-8A90-92BBB976DCF7.jpg I do like this size though. Falken ride great IMO. Might try Toyo AT3 next time.

Anyone have input on Cooper Discovery AT/3’s? I’ve heard they’re hard, but that was from one person at a gas station.

I had them in 265/70/18 i had nothing but a terrible experience. Had them rebalanced thrice and still had shake, wobble throughout my Regular driving.

Doesn’t sound like a good experience. How about BFG KO 2’s? I had the original on a Bronco years ago and loved them, but times do change.

Have 285/70 Nitto's currently. When they wear out going to either 35/12.50 or 305/70 depending on how I feel about the UCA clearance.

Had KO2's on a previous Ford truck. Made it to 95,000 miles. Doubt Nitto's make it so plan to go back to KO2z
