What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Replaced the old and oxidized headlights. I was going to buy the “cleaning kit,” but the replacements I found were cheaper than I thought. Overall I’m pleased.

Yup. Theres a few here and there at this beach but most stay around Zuma, best of the Malibu beaches.

got the Tundra back. Other 2 p/s lines replaced, rear axle breather R&R'd.
Did a test run today little over an hour to & same back. Seem to have worked the air out of the p/s lines.

NO! leaks from the rear diff! Functioning breather for the win.

Anyone with new frames or 200+k miles on the clock - I encourage you to verify your breather(s) is(are) functional.

 

Good on ya. That breather is so insignificant yet so important. Cost me a few hundred dollars in repairs due to leaky diff fluid onto the rear brake shoes. Wasn’t until coming on this site and learning the importance that prompted installation of a new one.

For some reason, the steering rack on my truck is no longer leaking at the bellows like yours. I wonder if the multiple suck and fills have helped revitalize the internal seals? Can this really happen?

Little parking lot tragedy. I was backing out and a lady started backing out right after. I saw and hit the brake, tried to hit drive but sandals suck. I heard crunch before I could get on the gas.

Got out and looked, just a busted taillight. Checked the whole corner and not a bit of damage that wasnt there already. Can't say the same for her car, the trunk hit dead center and its pretty collapsed. I feel bad for her. Not gonna bother her for a light, she has enough on her hands.

 

Looking at tail lights, I'm gonna just get a pair so they match. I see tons of options under $100 but noticed one odd difference. Some have a harness and some look to just be a shell. Anybody know why?

 

Replaced my leaking and noisy power steering pump with a new Toyota pump. Not too bad of a job. Replaced the OEM looking hydraulic fluid with Valvoline Max Life ATF.

Side note, you can prime/bleed the pump by attaching the suction line (larger OD) to the pump first, and keep the pressure line disconnected. Fill up the reservoir, and the fluid will go through up and out the pressure line side. Once all bubbles are gone, you can attach pressure line, and essentially don't have any air in the system.

 

At a guess, I'd say the ones with harnesses have LEDs and the shells are for standard lights.

 

Is there a DIY for the diff breather mod? Sitting at 201K and wondering if I should check on this. Replaced the fluid last summer and I’m pretty sure the rear isn’t leaking currently

It was a 5 hour drive away from me. Oddly enough, almost exactly 1 tank of fuel each way. Perfect to test out the MPG differences.

On the way there I got 16.75 mpg corrected for tire size,

In the way back I got a corrected 19MPG!!! What!?! How is that possible?!?

Yeah I thought of that. Wasn’t much of a difference though. We’re talking MN to Wisconsin and back.

 

Oh yeah. Forgot to mention. The best part is, I got it for a hundred bucks, clamps included.

A capped truck should be more aerodynamic than an open bed w/ all the turbulence of the open bed.
But you've added weight & window openings which likely negate any benefit.

Could be you had a strong tail wind going east & same strong head wind heading west.
Or - as simple as one fill up was more filled than the other. Different pump, different cutoff speed.
Even angle of filler in the tank neck may change how soon the pump cuts off.

Without repetitive results - just a fluke. But it's a goal point for you now.

I was driving my Tundra like a sport truck yesterday. Forgot I had a section of stone wall in the bed until I heard one rock take a tumble on a turn near the end of my travels. LOL - love these trucks, but I got 11.65 mpg over 122 miles. Previous tank was 14 mpg around town just as a reference & that's running narrow street tires.

Yep, sliders. It’s a Leer Model. Windoors or or side doors would’ve been nice since it’s occasionally a work truck and I haul a lot of tools, but if I ever go on an offroading trip where I wouldn’t take the motor home, it would be pretty nice.

Wind definitely played in a bit. It was barely noticeable. I was really paying attention because I knew this would be the closest test I’ll ever have. I drove the same speed down the same roads. The other thing is, it was all a solid run. No stops, no slowdowns, just straight 60-70mph for 5 hours straight. In that instance the weight would probably make less impact and the aerodynamics would make more right?

Obviously it can’t account for 2 mpg, but it must’ve played a factor.

I ordered a set off Amazon, mostly because other sources wanted more money than I want to spend right now and can't promise quick shipping. I need my truck this weekend and don't really want to cruise around with the dreaded red tail light tape.

Just got one side sitting on its wheels and tore the suspension off the 2nd side. For some reason the drivers side is rusted more. Anyway rust is almost off and I'm going to start welding new stuff on that side. Downhill from here

My reg cab as been averaging 10-12mpg. But I also drive a lot of short trips

 

If I drive the speed limit on my 20 minute work commute (60-65mph) I get about 12 or 13mpg. If I go 50mph I can get 17mpg. That's according to my scangauge without adjusting the numbers to reflect that I have 295s. I got 19mpg with stock tires on a trip going about 60-65 the whole way once.

But I'm also in coastal Texas where it's flat most of the time.

 

I don't put any faith in the computerized estimates. My Torque app says I average 18.5... No idea how these calculate but they are not accurate unfortunately.

 

I’m sure once I start taking it distance the mileage will be better. Headers and injectors may make it even better too. (I will be running a 2018 highlander muffler..... and a electric cutout) so I will be tempted but not that much to mash the gas

 

Assuming you have 295/75/16s, and your spedometer is accurate, instead of 13 mpg, you’re getting 14.2 MPG. The 295s are 9.2% larger, so your mpg will read only 91..7% of what it actually is. My speedometer is actually a bit off even with stock sizing, so my correction factor is 1.08. Thus every MPG reading I get I have to multiply by 1.08 to get my true reading.

I gave up on getting an accurate mpg reading with Torque. The data just comes in too slow. They have a calibration feature which I’ve messed with, but it’s just not able to be accurate.
