Shankly HD Spring Compressors

I’ve seen a lot of people talking about sketchy spring compressors, so I thought I’d share.

I ordered these Shankly Heavy Duty spring compressors off Amazon for $56, and they are awesome. They acted as if the Tundra spring wasn’t even there. No bending, twisting, or sliding. They compressed the spring very easily using a ratchet or impact gun. They have a sturdy clamping ring to secure the lower jaw to the spring, and an (optional) adjustable collar to tie the two compressors together to ensure they don’t slide.

I’ve used a few different spring compressors in the past and these are by far the best. Zero concerns using these on heavy springs.

They worked for me too when I upgraded to 6112. At some point I think I need 700lb coils if I want to install a winch on my steel bumper.

That maybe when the compressors are put to the test. Using an impact may lead to dicey situation IMO

 

Yeah, I generally get a feel for it with a ratchet or open-end before I move to an impact. I also keep my gun on a low torque setting.

 

Just used a pair of these spring compressors to swap up to 700# springs on icon coilovers and they worked great. Make sure to start with them at least somewhat collapsed when starting on an already preloaded spring though, the first 650# spring I removed I barely had enough threads left to get all the load off and remove the tool. They popped apart at the very end and could have been bad if there was more load left on them. I used one of the regular old spring compressors as a third leg safety but totally not needed for the shankley tool. Lots of grease and impact gun made quick work of it.

 

The big chain auto parts store also have them for free rental

 

The rental ones are designed for passenger cars and not truck springs

 

Good enough for a one time use. I guess if you're needing a truck spring compressor more than once or twice a year it could be worth the investment.
