Started bow hunting when I was 15 with a matthews Q2XL. Then upgraded to a bowtech 82nd airborne and been shooting that for the past about 10 11 years. Now just upgraded to a hoyt rx1 turbo.

Wow! Never hunted turkey before, but I understand it’s difficult enough with a longgun/shotgun. But a 9-10 year old girl successfully bowhunting one for two years straight? Impressive!

If I can ever get over my target panic, I’d like to bowhunt hogs with a 60 lb Samick Sage recurve.

There's an archer by the name of randy ulmer. Quite accomplished at hunting and tournament /3D. I've read a lot of his articles on shooting a bow. Google him and read what he has to say about target panic. Good luck to you.

I made a bad shot about 20 years ago on a doe so I gave up bowhunting for about 10 years. I thought if I couldn't do my job then I shouldn't be out in the woods.

Finally forgave myself after about 10 years ago and picked up a Bear Instinct, then Matthews, switched to Elite, then dropped down in poundage to a Bear Agenda 6. I went to the local proshop and shot all their bows and the Bear just was a bad-ass bow for 62lbs maxed out.

Picture below was in a corn field a few years ago on Halloween night. Selfie... bitch to drag out. Looks bigger in picture than reality. :sadviolin:

I practice a lot. Even getting my nieces and nephews into it. I put $ under cans and they see who can hit them at different distances.20141102_182518.jpg

I have a Diamond SB1 and a Prime Logic in tactical tan. Both set at 65 lbs. The SB1 is pretty much how I got it. The Prime has Black Gold 7-pin and a QAD drop away rest. I made my own stabilizer (PVC with weight and silicon rubber inside, wrapped in paracord). Right now, I've been using Blackout Envy X5 arrows. Not the greatest, but they are what I started with and they seem to work...see the last pic at 40 yards, two days after getting the Prime. Very smooth shooting bow.

Drew my whitetail doe tag for the season. Shoulder is still giving me issues but hoping I can lay one down. If it gives me problems, and I can’t make an ethical kill, I’m going to the doctor and switching to xbow next season

Any hunters in here from TX, specifically central TX, Gillispie County? I may be coming out there next year to hunt a private ranch. Would love to hook up with someone who might consider scouting the ranch ahead of time, and then hunt it with me. I'm coming from Cali. I hunt, but have never hunted white tail.

I really want to get into bow hunting to take advantage of the earlier seasons. Can any of you bow hunters recommend a good beginner bow that would still be good for hunting?

Man you're gonna open up a can of worms on this one LOL. Just like with most things now a days, it all boils down to preference. The big manufacturers (Hoyt, PSE, Matthews, BowTech, etc) all have proven technology in them and should be close in price point. My main advice would be to decide how much you wanna spend (cause you get easily hit 1,000+ dollars with sights, quivers, releases, etc.) and go to a local bow shop and try some out.

For what it's worth I shoot a Hoyt PowerMax and love it.

Yea that is sorta a leading question I suppose Lol. I would like to spend no more than $400 since I am mostly just testing the waters. The problem is there aren't any bow shops in my area. The best I have is Cabelas and Sportmans. I'm 6'1" and have monkey arms so draw length is probably going to be an issue for me.

just got into archery 2 years couldn't make up my mind so I got a Barnett crossbow. Buddy's dad sold me pse stinger compound with a dozen arrows, broadheads, and a hard case for $100. Found quickly both have pros and cons. The compound is lighter easier to carry and more fun the shoot. Crossbow is heavy but much easier to get a shot off

I've got a Bear BR33. It pulls very smooth so the 70 lbs. feels more like 60. Had a Hoyt Intruder for about 20 years and gave it away a couple of years ago. Both of my daughters shoot targets with their little Genesis bows. Always fun to shoot with them.

JH, look at CL for a used bow. You can pick up a decent entry level ($400-$500) bow for half that price. Research the bows for ones with longer draw lengths, meaning up to 31". I bought my SB1 new ($400) then picked up a PSE stinger used with case, arrows and stuff for $260. The PSE was going to be my spare bow (two is one, one is none). I sold the PSE when I got my Prime. Seriously, there are deals to be had. Cabelas should have decent bows that you can try out, or if there's a range near you, go there and rent one. Have them measure you (total wing span divided by 2.5) for draw length. And start at a low draw weight 45-50, to work on form. Good luck

At that price point, Diamond and Bear are good bows to start with and both sold at Cabela's

The Diamond bows are great starter bows. Loved my SB1 and there are a TON of youtube reviews with lots of positives. Still have mine and likely, will keep it as a spare. Again, you can find comparable ones used (lots of PSE and Bear bows online). Or for the price of a new bow only, you can find a decent used one with a release, arrows and maybe some extras (case).

WHen I first started bow hunting about 8 years ago I bought a Mission Endeavor. Still have it and love that damn thing. Its nice and compact for tree stand hunting (northeast). I have zero complaints other than the hand grip gets really cold during the late season.

I know some think it may affect the shot, but I wrap my bow grips with tennis racquet tape. The soft rubber type made by Wilson. Can be found in most sporting goods stores. Feels way more comfortable, especially if you have larger hands, and avoids the cold temp.

@kevine0001 @Medic343 Thanks for the suggestions. I was looking at the Diamond bows at Cabelas as I have heard some good things but didn't know if there was anything else I should be looking at. As far as buying a used bow, that is something I have been considering as well. I just don't really know enough to feel like I won't get ripped off.

If you find a used one, do an ebay search of it to check price; see if he/she is including extras like a release or arrows. Any used bow that's not more than 2-3 years old should be close to half off. I would stay away from anything older than 3 years old. and if it is 3 years old, consider getting new strings. Decent ones installed can be about $100 so factor that into the price. Cabelas should be able to restring, and even look at it and tell you if the strings are still okay.

JH, your profile says you're in Eastern WA. if you're close to Wenatchee, check this out:

    https://wenatchee.craigslist.org/spo/d/wenatchee-diamond-edge-sb-1/6956808993.html

SB1 with case and arrows, asking $350. New right now on Amazon, this is $360 +/- for the bow only. You can get decent arrows for about $60 per dozen (Cabela's Blackout X5 envy). A new case is about $40-$50. His price sounds about fair, but I'd offer him $300. I probably would not pay much more, maybe $325. He should jump at that. Like me, he probably upgraded before hunting season and needs the $$$
