Short version-I'd like to learn about resources to help establish the value of, and possibly sell, a 1966 Ford Mustang.

Long version-This is my dad's car. He's the original owner and has meticulous records. Everything on the car is original except for the air compressor for the AC and it was repainted once in the mid 70s in the OEM yellow. It's absolutely mint inside. Its probably nicer inside than it was when it rolled off the lot. My dad is a fanatic about his vehicles being clean and original. Outside, it's mint from 10 feet. It was his daily driver for almost 50 years so it's got the occasional paint chip and a few very, very minor dings. 289 V8, 3 speed with factory air conditioning and a vinyl top. No rust, never been in an accident of any kind, still has the original spare tire, all numbers match, all stock-no hot rod parts. He doesn't drive it anymore and talks of maybe selling. It's always been garaged and he's never lived in the snow or near the coast. The engine was rebuilt in 2004 I think with around 200,000 miles under it's belt. The heads are still original No leaks, no weird noises... it truly is a gorgeous car.

I don't know much about cars. I love my Toyota 4x4s. If I had a budget and room for a car, I'd want a 427 Cobra replica. Beyond that, I don't know. I've never been much of a car guy. So, I turn to the good people here for advice. Where do I look for a credible appraiser or a buyer? Is it worth repainting and would that expense be recovered in a sale? Would it be worth considering one of the auction places to handle it all for more money and what I'm assuming is a healthy fee?

I can do that. The next time I swing by my parent's house, I'll take a few shots. Maybe this weekend I'll head over.

I work in accessories for classic cars, most guys now days are going for the barn find look or the show room condition look. My suggestion on the paint would be to leave it as is. I would start by looking around on the web to see what they are going for local, maybe take it in for a detail, and then throw it on c-list with a price a little higher than what your looking to get out of it. if its all original after the engine re build, I would guess your still going to get good money for it.

Do you think some good PDR would help the value? He did mention a couple door dings.

Rare situation you got there it sounds like. I am not an expert, and don't have any experience, but ill throw in my 2 cents to subscribe for pics. Does he have some sort of classic car insurance that insures it above the every day KBB value? Hagerty, or something like that. They probably have an idea of what the car's actual market value is in the event of a pay out. Now I know insurance companies are not trying to pay top dollar to replace cars, but it would be a place to start. They probably send out an appraiser if you decide to insure through them since classic cars are unique in condition. You might get a "free" appraisal if you take out a policy through them, then sell the car and get the pro rated money back.

    In for pics!

A quick look on eBay shows 66 Mustangs going for $7k - $70k. Things to know...is it a fastback or coupe? 3 speed...auto or manual? Does your dad have all the original paperwork from the dealer...window sticker, purchase agreement etc.? Is it a K-code mustang? Recommend you look at eBay, Hemmings, and some other Mustang pubs/magazines/online sources for a reasonable estimate.

I have owned a ‘65, ‘71, & two ‘72 mustangs throughout the years. What really drives up the value is the rarity of the car. Rare mustangs with original parts will fetch the $30k+ numbers. Unfortunately Marti reports are not available before 1967, which will tell you a lot about your car and can be used to up the sale price.

From what you have described so far about the car, it is a pretty common ‘66 coupe. I would guess you are looking in the $15k-$25k range. But pictures would help. Check if the engine is 2v or 4v Hi-Po.

I'm printing this picture now. I'll be in the john with a box of Kleenex for a while.

I have no idea how to quote everybody, so I'll do it the old fashioned way. He's got some sort of classic car insurance. When I asked about it being appraised, he didn't think it had been done. I don't know how you insure a classic without an appraisal, so I'm looking for a reputable appraiser in the area. Hopefully someone in my area chimes in with a recommendation. Google's results are a bit overwhelming.

The dings are minuscule. The occasional paint chip is more troubling in my uneducated opinion. While the paint and body are in amazing shape for a daily driver of this age, I suspect they aren't quite up to par with what the car may go for. Ol' dad won't spend the money on a paint job, I'm pretty sure of that. I want him to paint it. Not my car, not my money.

2v or 4v? That's alphabet soup, man! I'm guessing that you're referencing 2 vs 4 valves per cylinder. I don't believe there were any high performance parts on it. Yes, it's a coupe. No fastback, no convertible. I cry every time I think about this. I also weep endlessly over the color. Mustangs are supposed to be red, just like Tundras are supposed to be black. There really isn't any room for debating this. :stirthepot:

He's got EVERYTHING for the car. Window sticker, every manual/book, receipts for just about everything except for fill ups, even some mileage logs from when he had to deliver something while working. He's the guy people dream of buying a used vehicle from.

I'll go through the auto trader link posted above, sold items on ebay and poke around online and share it with him. NADA classic cars says 27k, but they didn't ask questions such as is it a rusted hulk, perfect restoration or modified hot rod. I supposed location is going to play a part in the price, too. I'm just so ignorant to this stuff.

And, allow me to do this before some other wise guy does it.

:worthless: I'm working on it. Maybe I can get some photographs on Saturday.

You said it was a 289 engine. That will either come with a 2 barrel carburetor, 4 barrel, or 4 barrel with HiPo 289 (less likely with an auto trans) The window sticker should tell you a lot. Post that up too! I had the window sticker for my ‘71 coupe, sold for $3,100 brand new.

Oh, carburetor! Yeah, it is definitely a 2 barrel. It also has a 3 speed manual. My dad taught us how to drive a stick shift in that car. He must have been on a verge of throwing up every time a driving lesson came around.

I've been trying to get him to do this for years. There are classic car shows all over the place. He doesn't want to schmooze with every swinging dck that walks by for hours on end and I don't blame him a bit. But, if you want to sell the car.... :notsure: It's not a Corolla. People are going to want to reminisce.

Ok, I'm getting confused. I can't just add a picture, I have to host it somewhere? Balls. I managed to add 'media' but have no idea how to get it into this thread. Technology has gone awry! Advice?

Upload a file? I don't see that one. Nothing makes me feel dumber than arguing with technology. Good grief. It says I can upload from my media, so lets give that a go and see how it works.

140 might be pretty ambitious. When he was younger, he may have stretched it's legs a time or two. This is the problem with original cars for me. I'd want to flog that v8 and smoke some tires! Make it roar so much that women and children flee from the streets in fear! Yeah!! I can't do that to an original. I need a replica car to do such things. Hey @Mcoop , where did you put your keys?

Cool Stang! I've got my dads 69 Mach 1 at home in the garage myself.

If you want to PM me the car VIN I will look it up on my Hagerty account and give you what they are pricing the car at. They have a pretty cool valuation tool for customers/members.

I'm not a ford guy, but I own a 70 Corvette and I am familiar with classic car originality ("numbers matching") and restoration (Master Judge).

The best way to understand how much your Dad's car is worth is to become familiar with exactly what collectors desire in the car. You are on the right track with originality and original ownership. For example, in collector Corvettes, engine size and type are everything...big block cars are generally worth roughly twice as much as identical small block cars. For your Mustang, the 289 will score higher than the inline six, and the four speed manual will be a plus over the automatic. There may be other things that elevate the value (looks like rare Ford factory air for the era). The only way to figure out what collectors will pay for these features is to do the research. Doing this research may demand more time than you want to commit, but without it, your Dad will be at the mercy of others in determining the value.

Start here: Mustang Club of America ( https://mustang.org/ ) . Dues are probably reasonable, and will open up a lot research sources to you. Consider attending national or local chapter events. Maybe even get it judged by top Mustang judges at a national event if the Mustang people have that. Getting it judged will give you a good idea of just how original the car is to the collector's eye. Some classic car clubs will have a "corral" or "for sale" area where you can park the car with your phone number on it. Hanging out with the car to schmooze is optional. Just like Tundras.com, mustang.org has a place for classified ads...I wouldn't list the car for sale until I understood the true value of the car.

Before you put the car up for sale, considering stripping off anything non-original to the car. For example, the side moldings in your pics appear to be functional stick-ons from the era. Those are non-original and will detract from the car's originality in the mind of a purist...you don't want him thinking about how he's going to get those off while deciding if he likes the car. Same goes for that steering wheel wrap, dash mat, console pockets, etc. I would probably lose the aftermarket floor mats (Is the carpet original?, heel protector under the accelerator looks aftermarket, but I'm not a ford guy). All original purchase/maintenance records and spare tire...Outstanding. Engine compartment and trunk look original and pristine ($$$$).

I don't mean to be overly critical of your Dad's car, but collectors are looking for "just like it rolled out of the factory", and those are the guys willing to pay top dollar for old cars that come closest. If he's the original owner, we're probably about the same age.

Good luck to you and your Dad with your venture.
