Is it just me or is this just straight up bovine excrement?

So I sent a message to Toyota of Cool Springs after I received my order saying that I was missing a part (the "slave" cylinder). This is what followed:

    Toyota: Hello,

I have attached a picture of the diagram for the brake master cylinder for your Tundra. The part you ordered is in the box marked 47201. That is the actual brake master cylinder. To get anything outside of that box, you must order the large box that encompasses everything in the picture marked 47210L. It will come with the brake booster and master cylinder as an assembly. Here is a link to the part in our store:

    https://parts.toyotaofcoolsprings.com/oem-parts/toyota-cylinder-assembly-brake-472000c073

    Thanks,

    Roman

Me: Roman, thanks for the quick response. I believe there is some miscommunication. I have attached a screenshot of the item I ordered, a photo of the item I received, and a photo of the item I need. I think you'll agree with me that the item in green in the description is what I should have received.

    Thanks,

Toyota: No problem. Unfortunately, Toyota does not sell the part other than the way you received it unless it is ordered as a complete assembly along with the brake booster as illustrated in the diagram I sent. I wish we could get the part
    Thanks,

    Roman

Me: So you are telling me that you have a product on your website that is shown a certain way, I can order the product and you take my payment, yet you can't deliver the product?

Toyota: Diagram images of parts are not an exact representation of the part itself.

    https://parts.toyotaofcoolsprings.com/policies/terms-and-conditions

    Thanks,

    Roman

Me: Well, that's convenient. I'll have to implement that strategy into my business. I fail to understand why Toyota cannot sell these parts separately. Thanks for letting me know as I thought I received the wrong part.

Toyota: I do too. I'm sure there is a bean counter somewhere that thought it was a good idea to separate the two parts like that. I've ran into this issue before with this particular part through our shop. It's a large price difference just to be able to get that other section of the part.

If you need to return it, we can take it back as long as it is still in the original Toyota packaging. No restocking fee will be applied.

    Thanks,

    Roman

Me: Ok. I'll check with my mechanic and I may just install the part I got, otherwise I'll return it.

Me: Roman, I just checked again and that link you sent for the parts I supposedly need to buy looks nothing like what I need. Now, maybe that's just because you guys hire poor illustrators or don't update your photos, but how do I know that will be what I need?

Attached are the photos I sent him.

Damn, I'm exhausted just reading this. 100% BS no doubt. Hate when crap like this happens. They make you feel like it's NEVER happened to anyone else, or that you're an idiot for not deciphering the hieroglyphics on their website. Ridiculous.

I don't really think it was his fault. I think he remained calm while you were aggressive and offered a refund with no restocking fee after letting you know which assembly you were looking for.

He doesn't choose how products are sold, only tries to help the customer, which I think he did well.

I do find it unfortunate how the product is pictured and how you have to buy the assembly to get the part you need. This may be one of the cases where it was easier to get it from your local dealer rather than trying to save a few bucks on the internet.

I don't think it's his fault either, I thought he was pretty professional. I was aggressive because 1. This issue is driving me nuts and is completely against TPS thinking, and 2. I shouldn't need to have to return it in the first place. I don't have any problem with the way he has handled it.

Local dealer? Haha! Yeah, you want to know what my local dealer quoted me for that part? $3,300. I'm dead serious

Pretty common practice. Often manufacturers won't sell parts separately. For instance, trying to upgrade the insert on the door cards requires you to buy the entire door card. They have the illustrations there as a general guide so you know you're in the ballpark. I don't think it's BS on Roman or Toyota's part at all.

I’m not sure what your issue is. It sounds like you ordered a specific part number and your received the correct item, it’s just not what you thought it was. After contacting Roman, he gave you the info on the correct part number and offered a return/refund of what you purchased with no restocking fee.

Sounds like you’re getting great customer service from @Roman and you should have messaged him first to make sure you were ordering the correct part number.

    Am I missing something?

I'm miffed because I didn't get the product that they have pictured! I mean, where else is that just normal practice? And yeah, I probably wasn't in the greatest mood to start with as apparently Toyota thinks that this little piece is hidden treasure that no one should have.

Not sure why everyone thinks I'm mad at Roman, I thought he handled the exchange well, I'm mad at the business practices put in place that he has to deal with. If I had known he was in here I would have messaged him first.

Those were just the first 10 stores that pulled up for me, and none of them match the part. Websites are created and ran by a third party. Sometimes, they get images wrong. They don't work for Toyota, and probably wouldn't know a brake master cylinder from a strut mount. There are hundreds of thousands of parts spanning the decades, and images for most of them that another party put together on part diagrams. Then some guy at Toyota has to sign off on that stuff. Somewhere within the process, it may mess up. There's no way I'm going through endless diagrams one by one to make sure they match the actual part, which is why the disclaimer is on our website about diagram images not being an exact representation of the part.

I try to help where I can, but I also have to work with what I got.

Yep. I guess I'm just used to all the other websites who have accurate info, I just assumed Toyota would. And it wouldn't be that bad if I (and others, just look around on this forum or Google it) hadn't already had the run around with this particular part from other places. Ya know, because I have to buy the $800+ package with the parts I don't need to get the one part I do need.

I ordered a part from Toyota and didn't receive all of the components that the website shows. Then I'm told that I need to buy the package that costs twice as much just to get the one extra part that it shows with what I bought.

Junk Yard...Spoil yourself, get two and sell the other for more than you paid and less than the whole kit. I spent a hell of a time finding parts on the cool springs website but all the dealer websites are like that.

    Here's what I do:
    1. Go to the actual Toyota parts website. The image database and search functions are more complete and easier to use. Sometimes there's no pictures but you kinda got to know what your looking for and then they can lead you to the right diagram.

    2. Once you find what you need, write down the part number and go order from the lowest bidder.

I ordered about 7 items and two weren't exactly what I needed so ill call @Roman and get the right parts. I needed help and called Roman and he lead me in the right direction and found the elusive part for me.

All in all I see your frustration, but now that you know how it works you can kinda play the system. Sorry about the trouble with your truck.

That makes sense now. I agree with you that the Toyota parts websites and catalogs are dumb and don’t usually show the correct picture. (Not just Toyota, this seems to be an issue for all vehicle manufacturers and their parts sites)
    So yes... this is ridiculous!

I bet 70% of the posts on here for @Roman are just people asking him if they have the correct part number because it’s never easy to tell.

I'm with OP on this one. Nothing against Roman or anything. I just fined it very odd that the part that OP purchased was split up like that.
I'm in the multifamily housing maintenance business and I look at diagrams for parts all the time. From hvac, appliances, fixtures, small engines, all kinds of stuff. And I've never bought a part that was not the exact part from the parts diagram.
More times then not, you end up buying a part that comes with more parts then you need. Not the other way around. Most manufacturers dont want to sell each individual part so they group them, this is pretty common. But to take the master calendar and split it like that is sh**y.
I'm assuming that the other half of the master calendar is grouped with the booster. Which is probably more expensive.

    Alot of them
Just an FYI, a good dealer will price match another dealers price. I have done it a couple of times. When I bought my front sway bar, my dealer wanted $345.00. I showed them where I could get it from another dealer for $186.00. I walked out the door with it for $200.00.

Well, apparently in this industry that's how they do it and everyone just accepts it as normal.

And yes, the part I ordered is $350 but the whole kit that contains the other part it $800+.

Problem is that nobody has this part. It is literally like that one part that they said "hey, let's make this super hard to find then we can add it to a bunch of other parts that you have to buy as a kit". I mean, I can buy specific bolts and washers but not something this specific?

I don't think I'll need it after my mechanic did another checkup, but I have been able to find one at a junk yard for $45 if I do wind up replacing it.

Haha! I think I've made that apparent. But if you have a monopoly you can do what you want.

I would suggest letting your mechanic supply parts next time.
