so I recently wrecked my Tacoma and am now in the market for a new truck. I loved my Tacoma and want another one as a trail truck but I've mostly decided that bows the time to take the insurance pay out and get my "grown-up" truck. Knowing that I want one as a tow pig from time to time and the fact that I love driving a full size. Tundra is my obvious choice. (Yes I know there are "better" tow vehicles out ther, I won't need it for that regularly)

So what I want is a CM 2nd gen tundra. Not the tiny bed but the ~6 foot will do.

I've been a Tacoma guy for years now and really haven't followed the tundras at all. My questions are:

    1. What are the "issues" I should look for in a used truck? Tacomas have frame rot, do tundras? Are there any transmission issues? Things like that?

    2. About how muc should I expect to pay for a second gen with 50-70,000 miles?

    Welcome to the site.

    1) 07-08 still have an issue with the frames, depending on where you live, this would be a concern.

    2) $25k and up. I just sold my CM, 12', SR5, 84k miles, 5k in hail damage, bald tires, for a little over $24k.

I noticed you would like the 6' bed, so you want the Double Cab, not the CrewMax.

Good luck on your search, ask a lot of questions, and enjoy.

Welcome to the big boys club sir! You are asking all the wrong questions lol. You can tow a space shuttle and it comes with a man card! 1000% you will never look back to a Tacoma or any other piece of shit brand out there

Minus the raptor, that's a pretty sweet truck too

I do not want the little rear doors, I want the full double doors with normal handles, does that's style only come with the 4' bed?? It's not a HUGE deal but if I'm gettin a full size truck I want a true full size: full size can and full size bed

I don't mean to sound like a prick, but the Tundra only pulled the OV (Orbiter Vehicle). The Space Shuttle is the entire assembly including the OV, Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs), and External Tank (ET).

But I still agree with everything you said!

I can handle 5.5'... it's not a "work" truck so that won't seem too goofy...

And y'all don't have to convince me on the towing capacities.. I used to drive an f450 hauling a gooseneck with 15,000 lbs plus on the trailer (skid steer with forestry mulcher). This truck will need to only haul my future Tacoma trail truck, nothing serious.

Close with the steering racks. 09-12's had steering rack issues. I researched this for weeks while dealing with my truck. Swapping a rack from the 07-08 and 13 was the common fix.

Haha, I wish I could jump on a Black Friday deal... insurance pay out won't come till Friday and I'm waiting about 2 weeks to find out about a potential job change with major raise before I can make any jump. Hoping to be in a new truck by Xmas

LoL in all serious good luck. Same situation happened with me. Someone killed my Taco, pulled the trigger on a PRO and ended up getting a huge promotion at work after so it all worked out in the end. I've been blessed and very thankful this year :hungry:

    Y'all know I will!!

    So other important question:

This will be mine and my daily driver for the forseable future, I want some comforts. I know I don't want a base model but I'm not as familiar with what options come with which trucks. In the Tacoma I'd never look less than a sport or off road as a daily driver.

I don't need the limited but I don't think the sr5 will cut it in the tundra. Where is the level of the nice seats, steering wheel controls (Bluetooth stock would be nice) but not to the point that I hit that luxurious price tag?? I'm not trying to kill my wallet here and do want to be able to mod the truck some. So it needs to be nice enough but not over the top of that makes sense..

Also, can you put 16's on these trucks?? The reason I ask is I have my 16's with 295's off my Tacoma and they're only about 3/4 worn down so I'd like to use them...

If your wanting leather seats, could get the SR5 with leather seat covers. There's companies out there that make them look like they came from the factory. I have the Limited and I don't like the leather seats at all but does come with heated seats with no memory function. The Platinum uses the leather that Lexus use's and the 1794 has the brown leather and looks to be comfortable as well, both have heated/cooled with memory.

    Better go with the limited.

That would be a no on the 16's as well. Smallest you can go is 17's

If you mean nice cloth seats, an SR5 with TRD package should have enough necessities for what you are describing. If you want leather you need to go aftermarket or go with the limited. The 14+ have a different interior and screen for radio/back up cam that I like.

As far as 16's, I don't think so. 90% sure a 17" is the smallest you can go to clear the brakes up front.

Don't care about leather, actually prefer cloth. I worth in farming/land management and I'll destroy leather in no time. Good to know about the wheels.. sucks but I can pass these on to my brother for his toy, he'll definitely appreciate that!!

So is it a year thing or a specific trim package that has the roll down rear window? Obviously counts on that "luxury" category but it'd be nice to have

Only the CrewMax has the power rear window that slides down.

I don't mean to sound like a prick, but the Tundra only pulled the OV. Pulled is the important word here. The rig had its own brakes and steering. The Tundra just made it move. This doesn't count as towing.

But I still agree with everything @BRNG ITT said about @Marty McFly 's post!

With a trailer brake, sort of, except trailers don't steer themselves.

Without a trailer brake, the truck does all the work. Pulling, turning, stopping are all controlled by the truck. This is what's Toyota's towing specs are based on.

No matter how you look at it, that was an amazing feat pulled off by a stock Tundra. They ran tests on the truck to determine if it was capable. The intended to swap the tested truck out for a brand new one before they pulled the shuttle. They said screw it and ran with the truck that the tested. Its pretty badass.

@cdkenne Most trailers we can afford don't steer themselves, but there are steering axle trailers.
