Well after a few sleepless nights and a lot of stress I committed to buying this thing! 2015 5.7 4x4 with 110k, dealer maintained all the way to 100k with a surprisingly meticulous previous owner as well. Coming from a tired 2.7 1st gen tacoma I love this thing to death. Have it scheduled for a trans fluid change next week because that's the one thing the guy didn't do, and the fluid is still red, but fairly dark. Rather be on the safe side.

But I'm hoping you all can ease my mind a bit. It runs great and has plenty of power, but at idle I can hear a somewhat rhythmic tick coming from the drivers side, definitely up top and seemingly the closest cylinder to the front. nothing loud or obviously concerning. But I'm a paranoid mess and its gonna drive me crazy if it's abnormal. Ive heard these are fairly loud engines, but dont have anything to compare it to.

It does go up in speed with RPM but doesn't get any louder. Oil changes always done on time and even documented through toyota. I just did one today in fact, which is when I noticed the noise. I used the mobil 1 0-20 "advanced fuel economy" synthetic at first, and then heard the 5.7 doesn't take well to that for some reason. So dumped the almost brand new oil out that had idled in it for maybe 15 minutes for valvoline. Noise still present, I used a wix filter and did the new O rings and all that. Oil pressure is perfect and everything seems fine, but noise is there.

It may have always been there, but I just didn't notice it on my drive home with it yesterday. Hopefully some of you can shed some light! Otherwise loving it so far, and managed to pull 19.7 mpg in the 148 mile drive home. Which blew me away if Im honest lol. Thanks guys

    Nice long bed!

These motors can have a little noise, but that video example is much louder than average.

Does the noise change with rpms during driving?

It does change with rpm, goes away after about 2k that I can tell. Mine isn't as loud either, just a similar tone and rhythm. And yeah I'm still getting used to how long this truck is lol. I'm used to my puny taco

It's normal, these engines are noisy. It sounds somewhat like a lifter ticking. Even my 4.0 4runner does it and it's lasted 200k miles so far. Don't worry about it. And I have never heard of these engines not liking mobile 1. I run the recommended viscosity of mobile 1 in all my vehicles with never a problem. If I am not mistaken the 5.7 in your truck calls for 5w-20. The newer FFV engine calls for 0w-20.

I wouldn’t be concerned about the noise, these engines internals are fairly loud. I was asked a few months ago if my 18 with 4000 miles was a diesel while sitting idled in a parking lot.
You have a great looking truck. Are you planing to change anything around or just going to enjoy it the way it is?

    Welcome from Bamaland.

No need to shy away from Mobil 1 in the 0W20. Works just fine.

And if you shop right you can buy Mama Toyota oil filters (which I believe to be better)for the same price, OR LESS, than the readily available retail oil filters.

Looks like a Lexus SC with a V8 creeping around the corner! It is so @RustyVT ?

Congrats on the new truck. Don't worry about that tick. Mine has sounded like a diesel from day 1. Normal, I don't like it, but it's normal.

Welcome from Colorado. The 5.7 isn't a quiet motor. Lots of upper mechanicals happening.

I thought they stopped making the single cab short bed in 2009. Nice truck! The owner took care of that thing and it shows.

The 4WD RCSB was produced 2007 to 2013, the RCLB like the OP has was produced 2007 to 2017.

2010 was the last year of the RWD RCSB.

Definitely, for a work truck he treated it really nice. Even put floor mats on top of the regular rubber floor mats lol

I plan to do some basic stuff, Bilstein 6112s and a set of wheels. May have my local painter do the grill surround and bulge to match the body color too. Simple exhaust as well, that's about it for now though!

0-20 seemed thin to me as well, but that's what it says right on the cap. I'll check the owners manual in a bit and see if the cap possibly got lost at some point and replaced with a newer one. I thought the mobil one thing seemed weird too, but I found a vid online and half the comments said that mobil 1 made their engine noisier. No idea haha, I'm just paranoid

I also have two 2 door Toyota products, and the SC400 was on my short list of possible purchases but the '07 RCSB won out.
