New Quicksand TRD Pro Member

Hi folks,

Just joined the forum and figured I would introduce myself. My name is Luis and I am a recent and very happy owner of a 16MY TRD Pro Tundra in the Quicksand flavor. I was searching the internet for information on mods and such, when I stumbled upon this place by accident. I am what you would call a more "hardcore" wheeler and the there wasn't as much on Tundra Talk that impressed me. Saw some very nice builds that seem to be up my ally on here and decided to join.

Pic of my ride below. Pardon the crappy cell pic, but its the day I was handed the keys to make it mine. She is super duper stock, other than the TRD Pro suspension.



A little about myself...

My families have always driven Toyotas, bu I have actually never personally owned one. I have worked and modified plenty of them, through work/friends/family, but never actually had one. I should mention that I come from the jeep world though and I have built/wheeled some pretty hardcore rigs. My latest being a 1 ton XJ, LS/4L60E, chopped roof, deavers, hydro bump stops, suspension seats and full cage. Its been a money pit, has hit some really hard trails, tackles the hard obstacles amazingly, but is so damn uncomfortable.... With it being so modded, I want to avoid getting bugged by the cops and driving that thing out to the Rubicon or Moab, for example, is simply out of the question. Couple that with the fact that my fiance is wanting to tag along more and more, she needs something a bit more comfortable. She's a trooper and doesn't complain, but I want her to have as much fun as I am having.

Anyway........

Que in the the Tundra! The purpose of this rig is for towing duties. Or at least that's what I told myself when I originally planned on buying it. Now that I actually own it, and having just returned from chasing the Baja 1000, I need something that can take me to remote places, hit the chop with some speed and wheel the occasional blue or green trail while out in the middle of no where. Mind you, I want to do all this while still having nice amenities and keeping the truck daily driver capable.

As of now, current plans are for some sort of rear rack system with a RTT. Supporting tools, fuel capacity, lights, etc. In regards to suspension, I am waiting to see the ICON kit that was just announced during SEMA for the add-on bypass LCA, but the intent is to run 35s with aftermarket coilover/bypasses and upgraded control arms. For the rear, i will keep it simple with leafs and probably a set of bypasses and a set of shackles. I would also love a supercharger, but I doubt that is in the playbook in the near future.

I will be adding a set of bags for the rear,since the jeep weighs in at around 6K plus trailer, and I should be pulling north of 8-9k lbs. In the end, it is still a tow pig for the jeep. It will just be a very capable tow pig once I am "finished"...

That's about all the plans I have for it. Not sure how long this will take, but I am moving for work so the truck will have minimal down time while getting modded. Of course i'll start with the small stuff, but keep your eyes peeled for TRD Pro parts in the classifieds section.

That's me in a nutshell. I hope to meet some new people and maybe even wheel with you guys if possible.

Welcome Luis, from Santa Cruz. Nice intro. Looks like you're gonna have a lot of projects and a lot to contribute to the wealth of knowledge here.
And, since you're a Toyota engineer.... How does one retain the BSM feature with an aftermarket rear bumper? I've been thinking that perhaps a bumper with a corner step might allow the placement of the sensor in the step and then a plastic cover over the outside.

Anyway, I am currently in Southern California, but moving to Indiana. From there, I should be heading to Dallas, Texas in a couple years for our new national HQ.

No problem, happy to help. I am actually not intimately familiar with the BSM system since I have responsibility for Body appearance and function components, but one of my best friends works in the electrical dept responsible for BSM. I do know that the BSM expects a specific material density for the bumper and any variation from that, including position of the sensor, will trip a MIL and not function the BSM system. My assumption is that after you replace with what I presume is a much thicker material density bumper, the BSM no longer sees the same frequencies being reflected off the material of the bumper and will illuminate the MIL. Ill pull the drawing tomorrow at work to confirm the system design, but that was just off the top of my head.

Currently in Post Production and Design Quality, but about to move to Indiana to do a rotation in Mass Production Quality while in-house at a manufacturing facility.

Is this an invite? CO has always been on the bucket list, but never actually had a good reason to go or anyone else that wanted to go.

I am game. Feel free to ask away! I will warn you though, I will probably be cheating, simply with the access I have at my fingertips.

Unfortunately, not yet. I am not a very good videographer(not sure if this is a word) and I haven't taken it out with the latest rebuild on the whole thing. Ill make sure to take some and post them whenever I do go out though. I doubt it may be soon, since I need to be moved into Indiana by January.

 

I presume that would be situational, but I am no frog expert....ha!

Appreciate it. I will definitely look you up if I am ever in the area. I've hit a couple of the hammers trails out here in Johnson Valley, but I am always up for some hard trails in other places. Moab is also on the bucket list.
