THIS is why I haven't bought a lift for my truck yet. SO many options and ways to do it and of which I know nothing about it, ha.

    @ColoradoTJ I figured, appreciated.

@TTU19 that looks like a great option. If you plan to put a light on it, make sure you can find something that will attach to those handguards nicely. It is nice that they are free floating but I don't know much about that style as far as mounting rails or accessories, I'm sure they have options, but it won't be as clean as a direct mount like an M-LOK, etc. setup. Also do you plan to run iron sights or an optic? They aren't included in that package so include that in your budget.

find something you like and check out gunbroker.com or something similar find a good price get it shipped and send it to a gunsmith to take a look at it if its used. if its new still get it looked at and enjoy a portion of every paycheck going towards ammo lol.

I'd like to put a good optic sight, red dot or something on it. Like with all our other toys, once I get one I know I'll want to add stuff to it, haha.

Also, you can't go wrong with an AK 47 or 74. This guy (refinished the "b-grade" stock) is a beast and keeps shooting no matter what you throw at it. 5.45x39 surplus ammo is cheap.

You can get a good AK for a bit less than an AR and shooting it is less expensive. Just something to consider. Also you never feel bad feeding it steel case ammo because that's what it was designed for. =]

ETA: And yes, I live in a rural area which is why I can take pictures of guns in my front yard without starting a riot.

Local gun range, rent weapons, shoot.

Might be surprised on what you like and don't like, what you thought you would shoot well and didn't (and visa Versa)

That is how I ended up with my daily carry G19. I tested out about every damn pistol on the market over a 5 month period. The Gen 4 Glock was the last one shot after needing a kick in the ass from a buddy since I have owned Glocks in the past but never shot really well. I tested out his G4G19 and never gave it back...quite literally. I did the FFL gun transfer from him and been so happy ever since.

I would test out multiple weapon platforms and see what you like. If you lived closer, we could go out one afternoon and run a course and burn a few rounds with my Colt.

Yeah, I've considered that too. My boss has a lot of guns and says he likes his AK much better than his AR.

Yup I hear you, it all adds up quick. One place I wouldn't skimp is the Optic. I use and love Aimpoint. I know guys that run EoTech and love them.
Just my opinion, but I wouldn't go with an AR for home defense, you can get it done with a handgun, all you need is proficiency and the right equipment. Those 5.56/.223 rounds really penetrate, what's behind your threat is just as important as hitting your threat. You can't count on all your rounds stopping at your threat and I'm sure you know what walls are made of. If you live alone in a single family home, not as big of a deal.

Good luck shopping, pew pew pew!

Good advice, and not the first time I'm hearing it. As of right now I don't have anything, so I need to make an investment.

IMO shotgun is the way to go for HD - cheap, easy to use, hard to screw up, cheap to buy ammo for and practice with. I'm a Mossberg guy buy any reasonably decent shotgun will do the trick. 172 lead pellets in someone's ass will make them 1: run and 2: think twice before breaking into someone else's house.

AR's really are like legos, sort of the guys "Barbie". you can dress her up in a thousand outfits. I think that is a lot of the fun of owning an AR (or two) I have 3rd gen night vision, Aimpoint reflex and 6 x 18 all on LaRue QD's. depends what kind of shooting mood I'm in. Both my sons have Bushmasters and one of my fav's is a Doublestar, none of which are top of the line but the Double star never jambs and with the scope I can put 100 yd groups in a nickel all day long off a bench.

agreeing with above posts though, the AR's and my AK are just fun, for defense I will go for the Mossburg or Glock. for survival I'll take one of my Ruger .22's

"adds" or "mods" are a money pit! its hard to stop once you start.

    Wes.
Lots of good advice on here. This is what I'll add. Go to a range that rents and sells. Talk to some of the guys behind the counter. Get to know some guys who are shooting ARs at the range. See what they're shooting. The guys behind the counter and other guys shooting will have safe/range queens. Their ferraris or Cadillacs if you will. Pretty guns. Great guns. Nothing wrong with them. Got to pay to play though.

Find out who has a "truck gun". See what they are running for their truck guns. That's the one you know is gonna be reliable and tough. Guys are just tossing them behind the seat.

Lots of good options in the 600 price point. Palmetto, Wyndham, etc. s&w makes an "M&P 15 sport" that's around $800. Great fun. Then you can dress it up with upgraded handguards, grips, buttstocks, trigger, etc. my truck gun is a DEL-Ton. Or was until I moved to NY. Mention "Del-ton" on an AR forum and you'll get laughed off and told to "go assemble a mil-spec bcm yada yada".
I've thrown that delton in the swamp and it still just keeps eating brass. $550. I've upgraded furniture over the years and have $800-900 in the gun now. In a SHTF situation I'd grab it every time over my Daniel Defense that's over twice the price. And you can go 3x the DD price too. Insane really.

I'd also recommend vortex optics that fall in this "great quality no hype" category.

The Black Rifle Bug is very contagious!!
Everyone has given great advice on choices. I personally wouldn't just settle on something for price. I would try to find someone you may know who is familiar and you could possibly gets some hands on. Go mil-spec for sure. Go with something that is stamped 5.56/223 or just 5.56.(If that is caliber you choose mind you)
Sign up on Palmetto State Armory newsletter...they always have great deals on everything along with ammo.... Save about 350 for your first 1000 rounds. You will need it, I guarantee it;)

Speaking of Del Ton, just got this in my e-mail from Midway USA, looks like all you would need is a lower receiver and a rear sight.

I heart these threads. Hard working Americans that enjoy a well made weapon.

I chose the weapon in my hands because it is the same platform two of my best friends use every day. I figured it was good enough for them, it is good enough for me.

    Merry Christmas...

You'll definitely catch the bug alright.
I'm waiting until I move out of NewYorkistan so I can set up a 300 blk with a can on the end. There's your perfect home defense gun. Subsonic ammo so you can hear should you ever have to use your home defense gun for home defense. Letting a 5.56 or a 12 ga crack down your hallway at 3am with no ear pro will give you permanent jingle bells.

I have a Ruger SR556 and a Bushmaster QRC from Cabelas that came with a red dot. You might also want to look into a piston vs gas driven action. Piston is much cleaner than gas. Adds some cost but higher quality IMO. The Bushmaster is gas, but I got it to add quantity vs quality to my assortment :D

There are a ton of options with AR. So you need to decide how "tacticool" you want it and make sure you have the rails to add stuff. Just remember that like our trucks, she you think you know what you want, some else will show up with more mods and wish you had em too!

Here are pics of mine, I built both my AR-15's, gathered parts for about a year as I could afford. One is a 5.56 the other is a 300 blackout. If you want to buy a factory made AR, you may look at BCM or build a lower and buy their upper.

I spy a Sig stoplight, I have one on one of mine as well. A bit big/heavy, but gets the job done!
