Air pump bypassed

I bypassed my air pumps today for about $30. I followed a thread that listed simple parts and detailed instructions. Used an automotive relay and a 4.7kohm resistor. Took about an hour

Were you getting error codes before you did this?

 

No, just bypassed it before it was an issue

 

I saw some posts of the more difficult bypass where they install the kit/plates and those people would report better mpg. Have you noticed any difference yet?

 

The block off plates are required if one or both valves are stuck open. Haven't checked mpg, hoping for good results though.

 

Block off plates are only required if the system failed and one or both valves are stuck open. It is a normally closed system, so if bypassed before their is an issue the valves are already closed. Haven't checked mpg yet.

 

Which 4.7kohm resistor did you use? There's 1W, 1/4 W, 1/2W on Amazon and I have no idea which one is best. And is there a good relay to go with?

Thanks for posting. I’m just learning about this cancer and am curious, on a scale of 1 to 10, how confident are you that it will prevent it from failing? Prevention is often immeasurable.

 

10. It disables the system/diagnostic so it'll never run the diagnostic/never fail.

 

My sons 2008 4.7 had the p2443 code in July of last year, $220 for replacing the right side valve, mechanics comment on the work order was “valve does look new but is failing”. The truck threw the same code 2 months later, and the code went away on its own in a week or so. Today it threw p2441. Seems that this is a pretty common issue and I like the idea of this bypass. My question is does bypassing these pumps impact the engine or performance? I’m guessing not, otherwise folks wouldn’t be doing it, I just wanted to check first before going down this road. Thanks in advance.

 

I wonder if it'll AFFECT emissions tests?

 

This does not effect emissions at all. What the circuit does is disable the emissions check at startup making the ECU think the temp is <50 deg F using the MAF sensor. The MAF sensor only thinks its <50 while startup using the starter relay resistor connection as shown. Once the engine is up and running starter relay resistor is disabled and the the MAF sensor works reporting normal engine temps.

 

The valves can develop leaks the inside is made of thin material if this happens and you don’t have block plates installed it will throw a code
