I think it starts with smoking meth and shooting heroin. Next thing you know you are changing lanes without signaling and over-tinting your windows. This always has a bad end, usually with a life ruined by eating with your mouth open and picking your nose in public.
    Oh, the pathos!

In CT they don't bother you much unless you drive suspiciously. back in the 80s and early 90s..... it was much different.

My ex had double limo tint on his car and any time I drove that bitch to work I would be pulled over on my way home. Fucking annoying. I did like how dark it was though...

Anyways... Yes.... Cops do not like approaching a car they can't see into. It's unnerving AF. I get it... They choose their career with everything that comes with it, but why make them on edge any more than needed?

Here's a question.... Why do you want the tint? For the aspect of keeping the heat out? To keep some privacy in the truck?

If you want it for a combo of the 2, I would say just do what is legal and use ceramic tint. It is way better than traditional time in terms of keeping your vehicle cooler.

A lot of places in Texas won't even pass you on your yearly inspection if your tint isn't within legal standards. Not sure if that is party of an inspection for your state, but more food for thought.

I have 5% tint on the front and 17% on the rear over the factory "tint". I never had issues with cops and tint until I got more reckless and tinted my entire windshield. That caught the cops attention and got me pulled over. He gave me a ticket; however, he did not measure or even mention the tint on my front doors, only the windshield. I was respectful and fully admitted to knowing it was illegal. Cop was very nice in return.

Why do I tint my windows dark? Frankly, because I like how it looks and I like picking my nose at red lights without everyone around me watching. Also, comes in handy after a day at the lake and wanting to change out of our bathing suits.

Here’s another perspective on tint (nothing to do with the OP’s question)

I have zero interest in additional tint. I use my truck a lot for scouting, hunting and mushroom hunting. Frequently the weather is not conducive to having the windows open but I want to have optimum visibility and be able to see as much as possible. Tint reduces this. The more tint the less you see.
    This is just my.02

Depends on where you are. Every truck I’ve owned has had illegal tint. Never stopped except for once. I used to have this beater 02 or 03 Impala tinted pretty deep that looked like exactly the sort of thing someone would sling dope out of. A Trooper got me one day and let me off with a warning. He actually spotted it while parked on the side of the road as I drove by. If I was over the limit it wasn’t by much. I’m convinced he looked at the whole package and thought he might have a dope seizure. If I had been in a nicer newer car he’s have ignored it.

I never understood the whole " I want it to be blacked out" look. Why? You can't see shit. I have 35 all around and at night backing up is still tough to see. And no one can see in so why go darker and draw attention

I’m tinted all the way around and when I drove from Cali to Yellowstone then from there to moab Utah then all the way to Miami Florida to visit family and all the way back to Cali, not one cop pulled me over or gave me a second look or any issues. To top it off I look suspicious(beard, long hair and brown) and still no issues. Whenever I do get pulled over for speeding I just tell the cop that I know I was being a dumbass for doing something wrong, apologize and tell them I understand that they are just doing their job and if they have to give me a ticket it’s ok. Don’t be an ass and they pretty much let you go with a warning. Be a dick and you’ll definitely get a ticket.

Because people like different things. With 35% people can for sure see in. It’s privacy and theft deterrent depending on where you live.

Would love to have the fronts match the rears but the state patrol in Minnesota love to ticket anyone tinted. Also anyone driving tint along with someone not familiar with tint (wife)will misjudge an approaching vehicle and get squished like a bug.:taco:

I found out a couple of years ago that you can get pulled over in another state for tint that is illegal there but is legal in the state you live in. For example Kansas seems to allow darker tint than Connecticut likes and while my wife and I were visiting family two years ago we got pulled over twice in CT. We got a citation and the second cop let us go because he realized we were out of state. I didn't have to pay the citation though after a couple phone calls. EDIT: This was before the Tundra but we were in our 16 Honda Civic coupe which we still have.

@Rex Kramer I don't know when it became un-American to ask about how laws are enforced, especially something as subjective as tint laws. Laws change all the time because of this very process. Questions like this are the fundamental underpinning of how laws are created and/or revised because they lead to the discussion about what may or may not need to change. If you believe that having illegal tint is the most reckless way of driving then it might be benificial to re-evaluate that stance after looking at cause of vehicle accident statistics.

Personally OP, I would stick to the legal limit, or at least very close. If you do go darker than legal just be prepared to get a ticket and remove the tint. Out of state LEO's will usually disregard tint because they realize how state tint laws differ, but they can still use it to pull you over and ticket you if they want, no matter how unlikely. Not giving them a reason to get pulled over is the way to roll. I have repect for LEO, but I'm not naive enough to think they're all good. They are only human after all.

If La has safety inspection it might fail. I would be more worried about that than getting a ticket. I was worried about my windshield strip. In Tx it is 5" or above AS1 line. Mine is 2" below. I just passed the inspection. I don't think inspection stations here care as long as it is not limo black or something ridiculous.

Personally I think tint laws are stupid as hell, but if you go with too dark of tint you give the popo reason to stop you and do some fishing.

I have what ever is legal here, not as dark as I would prefer but things being what they are I deal with it.

im in cleveland, i got 20% all around. i was only stopped once:

it was on the coldest day on record in decades and i was stopped for having illegal tint. he said if it wasnt so cold out he would test it and ticket me but left me off with a warning. i think when they stop you its because they dont know whats going on inside. once they see what is, i feel its pretty rare to get ticketed unless ur a dick

From what I’ve heard, the biggest problem is inspection stickers. Gonna have to find a guy.

Cousin of mine has a trick he swears works, when you get pulled over, roll down both front windows. LOL

I see more cars getting broken into with darker tint then lighter and it’s because I would assume they think it’s dark because the thief feels the owner has something to hide. Darker tint draws way more attention than it being a deterrent

illegal is illegal and it's a huge safety issue during night time.

I cant stand the tinted windshields etc. i have legal on mine and sunglasses do the rest.

i hate doctors that put their name on these idiotic prescriptions for tint.. seriously, what the heck do you do once you are outside of the car? are all the windows in your house tinted?

the best is hearing the complaints about needing brighter bulbs, because oem ones suck ... my stocks are phenomenol but I didnt tint my glass and smoke my lenses .
