2017 Tundra 5.7L 6 speed auto. Although the owner's manual does not address this, it seems that I must first shift to 4H, wait for it to engage, then shift to 4L. If I merely stop, shift trans to neutral with foot on brake, and attempt to go from 2H directly into 4L I get a flashing light and beeping warning. Is this normal, or is something wrong? Not a big deal, but kind of annoying.

You should be able to put the truck in neutral and move to 4L. However, you do have to pass 4H before you get to 4L. I believe it beeps at you to let you know you are on 4L and not drive to fast for the tranny.

I've only used it like once or twice, but other may have more in depth info for ya.

When I engage 4H, wait, then go into 4L it does not beep, so the beep is not normal.

The 4lo light is doesn't blink when it's engaged. The process I've been doing is switch to 4hi, let the light stop blinking, shift to neutral, switch to 4lo then let the light stop blinking. I reverse the process to continue to 2hi, and don't get a beep through any of it.

Thanks. Like I said, I've only used once or twice so couldn't remember exactly. Glad it's clarified.

Yes, I can shift without a warning blinking and aural alarm if I shift from 2H to 4H, wait, then shift to 4L. I was asking if it is supposed to not allow a shift directly from 2H to 4L. There are times when I want to go directly into 4L without waiting.

You can't. You must come to a stop when shifting into 4LO. Always been that way as far as I can remember back. You'll tear something up bad.

4H must be engaged before going to 4L. Meaning that you can't go directly from 2H to 4L.

If you want to do it when the car is stopped, you can switch to 4H and then may have to move a little forward or back to engage 4H. Then go to neutral and then engage 4L.

    I've never tried this:
stopped and in neutral then shift from 2H to 4L. Lights will flash ... Then go in gear and slowly move forward or back to engage the 4L. Not sure if this works but it can be handy if you are driving in 2H and go into muddy ditch and want to get out by using 4L.

Thanks. I just wanted to know if this is normal and now I know there's nothing wrong with my transfer case.
It seems that Toyota could design the system so that I can just go directly into 4L from 2H, or at least plainly state in the owner's manual that this should not be done.

I don't want to try what you suggest because I don't like the flashing light and attendant aural warning.

Thanks again for a straight and complete answer to my question.
