2020 Updates

If the V8 in the half ton market goes away people will just shift to 3/4 ton trucks with V8s. EPA and CAFE and spew whatever they want but in the end people will just end up buying used or going up to trucks that have N/A on their Window Sticker that have V8s.

EDIT: People will always end up buying what they want and that has not changed yet.

 

I haven't seen pricing yet and there are some weird missing options that aren't showing up on invoices yet like the power sunroof / moonroof. By the end of the month we should have a ton more info

I'm very hopeful for some small secret extras being thrown in there. At this point, it's the small things that matter.

 

Seeing as to how many people buy Ecoboost F150s I don’t think people are going to make a mass exodus to 3/4 ton V8 gassers. With all the complaining about Tundra fuel economy people aren’t going to go to trucks that get even worse fuel economy.

 

I doubt the amount of people buying ecoboosts are close to the amount of people buying V8 trucks of all brands combined. Also I have been hearing the Ecoboost isn't even the best MPG truck out there it gets beat by a couple V8s by other brands and the Half ton diesels unloaded and towing the mpg is worse than even their 5.0L V8.

 

I'm hoping they do what Ford did with the 5.0 and add direct injection to go along with port injection, then mate it to a 10-speed transmission. I would think with a couple other tweaks, the 13/17 on the 4x4 would at least hit 16/20 or better. It's a 13-year old powertrain coming into 2020 with still decent HP/TQ and towing numbers. During that time, Ford went from a 5.4L 4 speed to a 5.0L 6 speed to a 5.0L with DI/PI 10 speed, so any amount of tweaking should do it some good.

If they offer a hybrid that's fine, but I won't buy one with that option. I don't want to jack with hybrid battery systems. I'm also not a fan of turbocharged gas engines after a bad experience with an Ecoboost. When towing, you're in boost the whole time and still get similar or even worse MPGs to a V8. I guess I'm just an old school NA guy.

 

Take this for what it's worth, BUT....... My next door neighbor just purchased a 2019 Tundra at Mac Haik Tundra, down in League City, Texas, two days ago. While there, his buddy (who is an employee at said dealership) told him that the 2021 model year will see the elimination of the 4.6L, BUT the 5.7 liter will absolutely still be available, but in a hybrid format. In fact, he stated that this is not a secret so why all the conspiracy?

 

Hadn't been planning on replacing my '15 but with the flood of late model Tundies coming to a dealer near you, as stated above, maybe I'll sell it and go shoppin'

 

I was waiting to see what the 2020 model brought to the table. With sales being down, I was hoping maybe there'd be a ton of discounts available.

Well I ended up losing patience and put a deposit down for a 2016 Barcelona Red Platinum with 70k miles on it. Quite a departure from the original plan but I look forward to picking it up on Saturday. I feel like it's a great balance between reliability and comfort.

I'd love to be able to retrofit keyless entry and maybe Android Auto, but I plan on keeping this truck forever so I'm in no rush.

 

I wonder is Toyota has consider changing the gears in the Tundra. Most other 1/2 ton trucks are running a 3.23 - 3.55 in an effort to increase fuel economy.

On this forum, we talk about upgrading to 4.88s if running 35" tires, I can't imagine what a truck with 3.23s on 35s feels like

 

My wife has keyless on her Highlander and reading the manual it says you can unlock the doors but not start it with the mechanical key.

 

When the fob's battery is dead, you use the key to open the door, but you hold the fob up against the start button and then press the start button. The car and fob can communicate without a battery in the fob if it is held up against the start button. I just started my Camry like that a few days ago when my son had his keys with him and I only had the spare remote with dead battery.

My wife's vehicle starts flashing "low remote battery" on the dash several days before it actually goes out. Honestly, I hate the push button. We have had two vehicles with it and IMO the fobs are just harder to keep up with. Also, If I have a fob and my wife has hers in her purse in the car you can just walk up and unlock the doors since the second fob is already in the car. If that makes sense.

 

On my Tacoma you can start the truck with just holding the FOB close to push start and pressing it when battery is dead. They wouldn't design this without a means of starting the truck when battery goes dead. Personally once I started driving a vehicle with push start it is very hard to go back. Our Odyssey doesn't have it and it's a pain now.

Also, my thought is the new Tundra will be a 2022 model year. I can see Toyota wanting to get couple years out of the changes they just made for the 2020s.

 

You're right, I was thinking of our old Mazda. What @Boerseun said is correct.

 

The 4.30s that the truck came with stock is one of the reasons I bought it and happy I did love em when towing.

I feel like this is good for the people here now who modify their trucks. The old current 5.7 motor should be much easier to work on compared to a hybrid 5.7.

 

It actually makes more sense that the Hybrid will be a 5.7L in the Tundra than a V6. That being said I wonder if there will be a reg V8 as an option along with the Hybrid V8. Suspense is killing me lol I wish Toyota would announce the new engine lineup already.

 

I got a 19 I guess the 20 push start is sweet but I really wonder what would change as far as the body for 21

 

They're finally getting rid of Entune!? Its my biggest complaint with the truck, I bitch about it all the time. A $50k truck with a Super Nintendo in the dash is pathetic

 

It's going to have entune 3.0. Search youtube for all of it's features. Pretty neat.

 

entune is staying around so they can integrate remote start service and other features to charge you a yearly fee like onstar

 

With the gas mileage of our Tundra, what's the difference of a 3/4 tona anyway; still gonna get 16 MPG.
At least you can put a plow on it too!

You ain’t getting 16mpg in a 3/4 ton gas truck. Diesel maybe on the highway, but the tundra is right there with the big trucks at 13-14mpg’s.
I was looking at the Chevy 2500Hd with the 6.0 gas engine recently just for shits. Less oil by 2.4 quarts, bigger bed, better payload, just as good reliability with that engine that’s been around 20 years, and can turn the power way up with a tune or boost it.

 

Well obviously the amount of Ecoboosts sold aren’t going to be close to the amount of V8’s sold in the F150, Ram, Silverado, Sierra, Tundra and Titan combined. That’s a pointless comparison to make. The take rate of Ecoboosts compared to the 5.0 is pretty lopsided.

As far as MPG’s, I thought everyone here didn’t care about fuel economy because these are trucks lol. Or is that just an excuse for the Tundras lousy performance in that department? I think Ford really misstepped In trying to go with the perceived fuel efficiency advantage, especially given that most didn’t realize those in real world driving. They should have just went with it as a better performing option. It’s a better performer by almost any metric than any of the V8 half tons. And other than HD diesels it’s hard to argue against it with towing, unless you’re just looking at fuel economy.

Don’t get me wrong, I would never buy an F150, I just highly doubt there will be a mass exodus from the half ton segment as manufacturers move away from V8’s. Sure, you’ll get a few people stuck with the old school mentality who will dig their feet into the sand, most people who actually use and need their trucks will ultimately go with function over form and buy whatever gives them the best performance. I love my V8 sounds just as much as the next guy If the next Tundra has a twin turbo V6 or twin turbo V6 hybrid the way is rumored and that performs better in every measurable way compared to a V8 option at the end of the day I’m choosing performance over sound. And if the only V8 option is a 3/4 ton I’m not buying something larger that rides harsher and gets 12 mpg hwy just to have a V8.

 

Exactly, I know someone that just got a new Silverado 2500 with the 6.0. Pretty much gets 12mpg I Any scenario. He previously had a 2016 Silverado 1500 5.3 and a 2012 Tundra 5.7 and says the 2500 is way worse on gas than even the Tundra was. He needed the better towing capability of the 2500 though.

 

I wonder if they'll decide to keep the v8 but use cylinder deactivation? Hope not, but you never know.
