From the same site, the Quality index rating for Toyota is an 81 and Chevrolet is a 47. The industry average is a 42. http://www.dashboard-light.com/reports/Toyota.html

Lower, it has the Tundra with a Reliability Score of 96.3.

I've had Tahoes, Suburbans and still have a Yukon XL Denali. I also currently have two Tundras and a 4Runner. I'd stick to Toyota.

Half of us are here, in a Tundra, because of new GM’s.
We want to jump in, turn the key, and know we’ll make it there and back. Used to be able to in a Chevy. Not so much anymore.

Also considering one along with the AT4 If I don’t get another Tundra. I would wait for 2020 since the 6.2 will be available in the Trail Boss and RST. Also the 5.3 will be paired with the 10 spd now instead of the garbage 8 spd.

As far as JD Power, I take any of these ratings with a grain of salt however as someone who works for a company who has won numerous JD Power awards it certainly does not go to the company that throws the most money at them. Unless the auto industry portion of their rankings is completely different than everything else.

Nothing but anecdotal evidence here, but... A guy on one of my gun forums had a new Chevy Silverado with a weird rattling sound in the cabin. Could not figure it out. Took it to the dealer several times and they couldn't find it and eventually told him to pound sand.

He had an independent mechanic tear it apart and found the source. Apparently, at the factory, a disgruntled employee took two bolt heads and epoxied them together and then stuck it in a channel in the floorboards. Had to remove the seats and carpet to get to it.

When you have your employees sabotaging your products, it does not bode well for quality control.

My current vehicle is a minty 2005 GMC Yukon. Bought it with 80k miles and it now has just turned over 100k last week. I use only Mobil 1 for oil changes and take good care of it. Currently, the AC system has a leak which will be fixed soon. Last month, the resistor for the heater fan went bad. It was only a $25 part, but it was a bear to get to. Half of the dash lights don't work, and I had to replace the rear coils and shocks the month before that. The interior is squeaky and rattles, and the engine is using a quart of oil every 2500 miles, but doesn't smoke. Transmission has been acting funny lately as well. I'm afraid that I'm going to have to put a lot of money into it soon.

When I'm considering a new vehicle, I find the most popular forum for that vehicle and start reading posts and seeing what kind of problems come up. It's pretty enlightening to see what actual owners are experiencing with their vehicles.

Toyota forums are mostly full of posts about how to modify their vehicles and little nitpicky things like audio and tech upgrades. The Big Three forums are full of horror stories of mechanical issues.

I was at a party and met a Toyota factory manager with almost 20y experience. He talked about the floor like a religion describing Kaizen principles like he was reading a Wikipedia page and making employees happy. He said you could eat off it. There’s so much AI going on, parts being delivered by robots, super efficiency etc. I could easily understand why they’re so reliable.

They copied the tundra's rear end. Looks similar IMO

I think this design is uglier than the previous Gen I had a 2016 Silverado, the front end looked better.

I did the same. After years of being on online forums, you learn that you’ll get enthusiastic descriptions of what people like/hate about their cars or trucks on these sites. And they don’t hold back.

Go check out an F150 online forum. Search for “tundra”... the results are pretty funny.

As a former GMC truck owner. I will NEVER buy another GM product. My truck developed a shudder in the transmission at 11k miles. Dealer replaced the torque converter, which only helped the issued. It didn't fully resolve it. After another 5k miles, it continued to get worse. About 4 trips to the dealer only to be told, GM is aware and working to come up with a fix. Few weeks later, still no resolve. GM tried different trans fluids.. still couldn't fix the issue. Bring it back and they connected a computer to it and test drove it and said GM will not warranty because it's not out of spec. Traded it about a week later for my Tundra and have never looked back.

If you ever think about purchassing a GM product, just Google GM transmission shudder!

This. Cylinder deactivation makes the 1500’s complete pansies, and I drive one for work. The retune a few years back helped, but it’s still a grocery getter pickup.

I had a 15 GMC Sierra and decided it would be my last GM. In less than a year it had 4 recalls and the electronics were jacking up.
Took the loss and traded it in.

At the end of the day all trucks will have issues. For all the people with XYZ truck with lots of issues others will have zero. While the Tundra is undoubtedly more reliable it’s not like they’re without issues. Tons of people have had the cam leak issue. My 13 has had every single door lock actuator fail which has been a common issue they have never fixed. I had a sensor go that put my truck into limp mode and needed to have the truck towed.

I had no idea the 6.2 required premium. Screw that. It’s not supercharged.

GM’s stinginess with the 6.2 turned me off when I was in the market a couple years ago. I didn’t want the 5.3, and I didn’t want a $60k truck with a sunroof and crap.

Exactly, Toyota does seem to have fewer but when you have been building basically the same truck for what 12years now you better be good at it or you have a big problem. Now while we buy the Tundra's because of this factor the only problem with running a platform so long is that the issues that arose are continued on throughout the lifespan like the cam tower leak for example.

I just don't think its right to bash the other manufacturers for building in Mexico while Toyota is doing it also. There top selling truck the Tacoma they ramped up production at the Mexico plant not at San Antonio. Shoot I was sad to see that the Toyota Trd rims are now made in China. People want more content in there trucks yet the manufacturers have to keep them at a certain price point, labor cost is where they are making up the difference. If Toyota was to Increase the Tundra up to the big 3 truck levels they to might shift to Mexico for production as well like they did with the Tacoma.

Tundra is no golden child but fewer issues is key. Some people just want less of those interruptions in their life. Money and time, the latter irreplaceable and priceless in varying degrees especially as we get older and value it more.

"Bash"?...If I bash GM it wouldn't be for building a truck in Mexico. It'll be for squandering nearly a century of good customer relations, and surrendering their pre-eminent automotive manufacturer position in the world, by building sh*t vehicles since the seventies. Corporate arrogance will soon lead to their complete demise.

But, having lived next door to Mexico, worked in Juarez, observed Mexican public education (sketchy), and their general state of development, a business plan of moving production between Mexico and the US depending on what bean counters say is most profitable this year is bad management for either GM or Toyota. Better to pick a place and stay there for a few years. Good products can be made in Mexico, using US made tools, equipment, and processes, as long as the available labor is well-trained and closely supervised. For the same cost (or less in the case of Tundra), my risk-averse personal choice will be American-made. If I were forced to buy a Mexican-assembled vehicle, I would chose Toyota over GM. My dollars, my choice...no bashing required.

GM’s not popular around where I am, they effectively hurt a whole city by closing up shop after we gave them 9.5billion.

Biggest employer in Oshawa, lifetime hard workers losing their livelihoods.

I haven't met anyone in the past 15 years that thinks trucks are worth their cost.

My grandfather bought a brand new F150 XLT 2wd in 1979 for $6800. Today, that same pickup is $37,300. He retired in 1978 as a carpenter working at the nearby university making $16 an hour.

Today, a master carpenter at the university makes maybe double what my grandfather made, but the truck price has increased by 5 times.

My dad's 2005 Chevy dually 1-ton 4x4 Duramax had a window sticker of $69,000, and that was 14 years ago.

When I got out of the Navy in 1992, I bought a brand new Toyota 4x4 pickup for $12,500. That same truck today would be the Tacoma and would cost me $30,000. When I got out of the Navy, the company I now work at started their manufacturing employees at $9.25. Today, they start at $15 an hour.

So while truck costs have gone up by 250%, wages have only gone up by 150%.

The working class is losing the American dream.

So true. I bought a new F150 4X4 with Ranger package in 1975 for $5700. The truck was solid with a manual transmission and T case. I had good paying graveyard shift job at our local plywood plant. I was making $4.44 per hour by the time I quit and went into the Marine Corps. Most of my friends could afford a new truck back then. Truck prices are crazy now. Crazy

More like the working class is financing or leasing the American Dream. There are plenty of lower cost options for transportation out there than the high end vehicles... but everyone wants to keep up with the Jones's. Manufacturer's sell at what the market will bear. It's us that drives the cost's up.

I really like this tailgate concept - it seems quite useful and makes the most out of an otherwise useless part. Hopefully Toyota will adapt and improve upon it. Supposedly that concept took a couple years to get to production - they really tested it, surprised they could not "engineer" around that problem. It seems as though some type of channel could be placed in that spot where it meets - but it maybe messed up other functions.

I had spent years looking at other brands online, and really wanted an F150 Eddie Bauer at one point, thought it was beautiful with the two tone paint job and all. Checked online at the forums and bought a Tundra in 2002. Did the same searching around for the last 4+ years and bought Tundra again. I think the new Chevy is Fugly. When I saw the first one on the freeway, I thought it had been squished in that compactor room on the Death Star in the first Star Wars movie. It just didn't look right, narrow with squished-in tail lights. Ok, they got all kinds of goodies if you are willing to pay, but for me, reliability must be there, first and foremost. Yea, as others have said here, some complaints about sound system, lack of goodies like keyless and big screens, but mostly lots of upgrades and having fun doing stuff to and with our trucks. The other brands forums read like horror stories of problems. I would rather take off on a couple thousand miles of fun vacation without worrying about the transmission or the electrical, and use a key to start the truck thank you.

    Not nearly enough room here!
Yep, like I've said on here before, my Tundra keeps me busy. It's ALWAYS needing something....dusted-off, detail sealant, wheel wax, floor liners wiped off, engine compartment cleaned, the list NEVER ends!:D

Or the time we all guessed the amount of change in Al’s Tundra to win it, and the winner forwarded it to charity. We gotta make up stuff to do because we are so repairless.
