Figured of start a thread here because I wanted to show a couple mods I did to my cheap harbor freight DA polisher.
It comes with a 6" "warrior" backing plate that isn't balanced great and is just cheap.
I should have taken more pics of the mods I did to make this cheapo polisher a little better, but didnt think of it til I was done.
I went ahead and replaced it with a 5" lake country backing plate. The polisher comes with a wrench and changing the plate is very easy, takes 2 minutes. I can use 5-7 inch pads on this plate.
While I had it off I removed the cover and packed in some more grease on the gears and bearing, it did quiet it down a bit.
I also did the "washer mod". Basically it's just adding a second washer to the shaft to push the plate off the body anand extra 1/8" inch or so.
Then I removed 4 screws that hold the handle or body to the head, very carefully pulled the body back about 1/4" and rotated it 90°. What this did was rotate the on/off switch from the side of the polisher which was awkward, to the top of it which is much more user friendly.
Anyway, that's what I have and use and it's been fine for me. These mods will make it much better.

Some day I'll buy a real polisher but for now this will work, and these easy, cheap mods will keep me appeased for a while longer.

I’ve got an Adam’s swirl killer 15mm and a griots 3in. Have had luck with both and both have made me money!

Nice. Some day I will upgrade I'm sure. I have been into this detailing thing for about a year now and honestly never expected to ever have a polisher. @SouthBoundSteve Steve talked me into it and guided me and I'm so glad he did. If nothing else I have a good looking truck and an expensive but rewarding hobby. If I could do a car or 2 for money I'd invest it into a polisher most likely

I bought a griots garage GG 6" HD today utilizing detailedimage 20% coupon code that includedpolishers, which is rare. Couldnt pass up the deal, especially after polishing out my truck last week with the harbor freight model. I know a decent DA would have cut my time way down. I'll keep the harbor freight unit as a backup or maybe change backing plates to a 3 inch or something. Anyway I heard great things about the GG6 and its normally 165 and I got it for around 125 which is good enough for me. I will be putting on my lake country 5" backing plate, tons more power and a heavy gauge 25'cord. I can't wait to try it out.

Hell yeah. Even with the minimal amount of correction I’ve done, I can tell the Griots is waaay better. You’re gonna love it.

That is a great polisher. From what I have read it kinda started the game as far as hobby polishers and DAs in general. For a little more you can get a griots which has more power and versatility but the porter cable is a good unit for the price. Certainly better than the harbor freight DA I started off with.
